Indonesia hold India at bay in AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers opener

Yangon (Myanmar), Aug 6 (UNI) The India U20 Women's Team were held to a goalless draw by Indonesia at the Thuwunna Stadium today, in their opening Group D encounter of the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers. The Young Tigresses have one point in the group, which is currently topped by hosts Myanmar, who defeated Turkmenistan 6-1 at the same venue, earlier in the day. An intense midfield battle began right from the kick-off, as both sides looked to assert their dominance. India managed to settle into the game early on, as they were able to pass it around in the opposition half, often creating chances down the wings. Neha's sixth-minute cross from the left wing deceived the Indonesian defence, leaving Pooja and Sulanjana Raul on the chase at the far post. A simple touch could have posed serious questions to Indonesia goalkeeper Alleana Ayu Arumy, but the ball eluded everyone. As the clock ticked past the half-hour mark, Sulanjana and Pooja tried their luck from long range. While the former's effort missed the target by inches, the latter saw her shot fly straight into Alleana's hands. Neha looked lively down the left flank after the change of ends, but the Indonesia defenders worked in unison to isolate the former and gain possession of the ball. With a little over 20 minutes left, India began to press high in order to induce some panic among the Indonesia defence. Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam intercepted a pass in the attacking third and cut it back for substitute Babita Kumari, who had replaced Neha. The latter, however, was unable to get a touch on the ball. Minutes later, Sibani looked to find Babita again with a cross from the left, but Alleana collected it calmly. Indonesia's only notable chance of the match came in the 87th minute, when substitute Ajeng Sri Handayani bounded past the India defence and attempted to place the ball at the far post. India goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem, however, got down low to make a save before Thoibisana Chanu Toijam cleared. India had two good chances in injury time, both off free-kicks by Anju Chanu Kayenpaibam, one from each flanks. While both the free-kicks were on target, the Indonesia goalkeeper managed to palm them away. The Young Tigresses will square off against Turkmenistan in their second match at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon on August 8, at 18:00 IST, in Group D of the Qualifiers. India U20 Women: Monalisha Devi Moirangthem (GK), Remi Thokchom, Thoibisana Chanu Toijam, Arina Devi Nameirakpam (Bhumika Devi Khumukcham 67'), Neha (Babita Kumari 67'), Pooja (Deepika Pal 90+3'), Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam, Shubhangi Singh (C), Anju Chanu Kayenpaibam, Cindy Remruatpuii Colney, Sulanjana Raul (Monisha Singha 84'). Shubman Gill to compete with Ben Stokes, Wiaan Mulder for ICC Player of the Month

India captain Shubman Gill was on Wednesday named among the three nominees for ICC's Player of the Month award for July along with South Africa's Wiaan Mulder and England skipper Ben Stokes. Gill led India remarkably in the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England as his young side emerged with a hard-fought 2-2 draw, a series in which the 25-year-old rewrote batting records. Gill scored 754 runs in the series against England with four centuries, including a double ton at 75.40 to break legendary Sunil Gavaskar's record (732) for the highest run tally for an Indian captain in a five-Test series. Gill's returns are now also the second-best behind Sir Donald Bradman (810 runs) in the all-time list for captains. 'Shubman Gill had a sensational month, amassing 567 runs at an impeccable average of 94.50 in three Tests during India's gripping series in England,' the ICC wrote on its website. 'He played a starring role in India's record-breaking win at Edgbaston, where he scored a monumental 269 in the first innings followed by 161 in the second. His combined 430 runs across the two innings is the second highest tally, next only to Graham Gooch's 456,' it added. The ICC said Gill carried the baton from 'all-time great' Virat Kohli at No.4. 'His consistency at No. 4, carrying on the baton from all-time great Virat Kohli, provided stability and flair in equal measure, and combined with his extraordinary captaincy in his debut series,' it said. In his maiden outing as South Africa captain, Mulder struck a mammoth 367 not out against Zimbabwe but declared his team's innings when he could have broken legendary Brian Lara's record for highest individual total of 400 not out against England in 2004. The ICC said, 'He scored 531 runs across the two matches at an astonishing average of 265.50, including a composed 147 in the second innings of the first Test.' 'However, his standout act came in the second Test at Bulawayo, where he smashed an unbeaten 367 in his maiden outing as South Africa's Test skipper — the highest individual score in South African Test history.' 'Mulder also chipped in with the ball, claiming seven wickets at just 15.28 apiece, including a four-wicket haul in the first Test,' it added. The ICC lauded Stokes for his all-round show against India saying, 'He scored 251 runs at an average of 50.20 and took 12 wickets at 26.33, delivering in high-pressure situations with both bat and ball.' 'His leadership proved crucial in maintaining England's intensity and belief in a closely contested series. With ball in hand, he bowled long spells, often breaking key partnerships and turning the tide in England's favour,' it added. With PTI inputs

Mohammed Siraj Responds To Asaduddin Owaisi's ' Poora Khol Diye Pasha ' Compliment After England Heroics

Mohammed Siraj did the star turn for India vs England in the highly contested Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The pacer bowled tirelessly to scalp 23 wickets and become the top wicket-taker. But more importantly, Siraj was crucial in moping up the tail of England on the final day of the fifth Test to ensure that India win the match by 6 runs and draw the series. After the terrific show, Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had a pure Hyderabadi response to India's big Test win against England at The Oval and pacer Mohammed Siraj's five-wicket haul. Congratulating the fellow Hyderabadi, Mr Owaisi posted on X, "Always a winner @mdsirajofficial! As we say in Hyderabadi, poora khol diye Pasha!" The phrase loosely means that the pacer was at the top of his game. Now, Siraj has responded to the praise. He wrote on X: "Thank you so much sir Always cheering for me." Thank you so much sir always cheering for me. — Mohammed Siraj (@mdsirajofficial) August 6, 2025 Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali feels India pacer Mohammed Siraj's big heart and his steadfast refusal to back down in the face of adversity sets him apart from the rest and makes him a difficult proposition for any batter. With 23 scalps to his name, Siraj emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the just-concluded Test tour of England, playing a key role in India holding the hosts to a 2-2 draw in an intensely fought five-match series. "Siraj has been outstanding in the England series. The energy, aggression, and consistency he brings with the ball is world-class. He's matured into a genuine match-winner for India, and it's always a challenge for batsmen facing him," said Moeen in a release from GFS Developments. "What impresses me most is his ability to control the ball. He's got a big heart and never backs down - that's what makes him so special. Credit to him for the impact he's making," he added. Siraj played all five Tests against England and bowled a staggering 185.3 overs.
