Bangladeshi actor Shanta Paul arrested in Kolkata for possessing fake Aadhaar, voter ID
She was arrested by the Lalbazar Detective Department officials in Kolkata. She had been living at a rented flat in Bijoygarh, Jadavpur, since 2023.
According to police, Shanta had entered India using a valid passport. She was working as a crew member of a Bangladeshi airline Regent Airways and was also a small-time model and actress.
"Initial probe revealed that the woman was trying to travel to several foreign countries but could not manage to do so from Bangladesh. So, she chose to come to India and travel to foreign countries using Indian documents. She took calculated steps for the purpose. She rented a room in (central Kolkata's posh) Park Street and used that address to get a ration card with the help of an agent," the police officer told PTI.
From there, she shifted to a rented flat in the southern part of the city's Bikramgarh area and from there got in touch with another man and managed to secure fake Aadhaar card and voter ID card, the officer said.
"She then applied for an Indian passport using all these fake documents. During verification, the woman was called by the officers of the Golf Green Police Station and at that time, she failed to produce her birth certificate and also could not give proper answers regarding her family members," he said.
Suspecting something "fishy", a complaint was filed at the Park Street Police Station by the Kolkata Police's Anti Rowdy Section.
Eventually, a raid was conducted by the police at her flat where they found several documents including Bangladeshi passport issued in her name, an employee ID of Regent Airways, an admit card of Dhaka's education board.
During the raid several Indian identity documents including Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and ration cards were also seized.
The police were also trying to find out which documents she had used to get the accommodation in Park Street.
Paul was remanded to police custody till August 8 by a court.
Her husband, a native of Andhra Pradesh, and her parents, who were staying with her in the rented flat, are also under investigation.

A non-resident Indian (NRI) woman residing temporarily at her Rajguru Nagar Extension home has lodged a police complaint against her domestic help, accusing her of stealing a purse containing gold jewellery, cash, and her passport—just days before her scheduled flight to Dubai on August 8. Acting on the complaint filed by Veena, the Sarabha Nagar police have registered an FIR against Sangeeta, under Section 305 (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Her Ludhiana residence is occasionally visited by the family, while two tenants currently occupy the property. In her complaint, Veena said that she arrived in Ludhiana a few days ago and was preparing to return to Dubai on August 8. On July 31, she reportedly retrieved her passport, some gold, ₹30,000 in cash, and a few US dollars from a bank locker and placed them in a purse, which she kept near her bed. The purse was later found missing. Veena alleged that her domestic help, Sangeeta, is responsible for the theft. However, Sangeeta has not absconded and remains present at the residence. Police have questioned her and conducted a search of her living quarters but have not recovered the missing items. Acting on the complaint filed by Veena, the Sarabha Nagar police have registered an FIR against Sangeeta, under Section 305 (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). 'We have registered a case based on the complaint. While the domestic help is being interrogated, other angles are also being explored,' said ASI Harbhol Singh, adding that one of the two tenants had left the premises on July 26, while the other tenant, who stayed behind, is also under police scrutiny.

Fear drives a 1,400-km ride, Malda bros back home from Ggn in autos
1 2 Malda: Israil and Ashraful had driven their autorickshaws in Gurgaon for years. They never could have imagined that those 3-wheelers would ever have even a 100-km-long run. However, times are such that things so outlandish are turning into stark reality. On Monday, the brothers reached their Malda homes in their autos, driving 1,400 km over two-and-a-half days. The reason? The mortal fear associated with being a migrant Bengali-speaking worker in Haryana. It was 16 years ago that Israil Mia and Ashraful left Gazole in search of work. They tried their hands at different odd jobs in Gurgaon, saved money and then bought two autos. Their wives worked as domestic helps in Gurgaon's Sector 49. Israil's 9-year-old son also lived with them. However, things changed about a fortnight back. A relative, suspected of being an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant, was detained by police. However, even though cops released him two days later, trouble started for the two brothers. "The landlord had already given us notice to vacate the room. We have Aadhaar card and EPIC but were still afraid that police would pick us up. In such uncertainty, we decided to leave Gurgaon. But we couldn't leave our autos behind. That's when we decided to drive back home in autos," said Israil. Their families and some essentials packed into the autos, the two brothers left Gurgaon on Aug 1. The journey, however, wasn't bereft of uncertainty. At each police checkpoint on the highway, they feared for the worst. While driving through UP, the brothers even had to bribe some cops so that they could pass. "We were scared and hardly took any rest on the road," said Ashraful. Finally, at South Dinajpur's Buniadpur, traffic cops guided them to the way home. There, district administration reached out to them. DM Nitin Singhania said, "We will help them in all possible ways." Now, safe at last, the brothers are worried about their future. They want to return to Gurgaon for work but said they would wait until the police harassment ends.
