12 exonerated in M6 case
The Accountability Court No1 Hyderabad, presided over by Judge Naseem Akhtar Soomro, has acquitted 12 accused from district Naushahro Feroze in the mega corruption reference related to the purchase of land for the Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway (M-6). The reference involved over Rs5 billion in alleged corruptions.
However, cases are still in progress against 30 suspects, including the axed deputy commissioners of Matiari and Naushehro Feroze districts, who are on the run after pocketing billions of rupees meant for buying land for the motorway.
The court accepted the acquittal pleas filed by the accused and released them with honour after concluding that no evidence had been found against them during investigations conducted by NAB and the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE).
The acquitted individuals include two former Mukhtiarkars, three clerks, three tapedars, and the former personal assistant (PA) of the ex-deputy commissioner of Naushehro Feroze. The decision was reserved after final arguments by the counsels and was issued yesterday in a two-page written judgment.
The judgment stated that no incriminating material was found against the applicants during the investigations, and NAB's special prosecutor had also confirmed the absence of any evidence on record. The Anti-Corruption Establishment had initially investigated the alleged corruption in the land acquisition process and later transferred the case to NAB.
The accused were acquitted under Section 265 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPrC). Those acquitted include, Shafiq Ahmed Soomro (former Mukhtiarkar Mehrabpur), Niaz Ali Ajan, (former Mukhtiarkar Bhirya City), Abdul Aziz Ansari (former PA to DC Naushehro Feroze), Abdul Ghaffar Depar (former senior clerk), Ghulam Haqqani Sehto and Tanveer Ali Mallah (former tapedars), Rustam Khoso (former accounts clerk), Khalid Masood Channa (private contractor), Sajjad Ahmed Memon (former social welfare officer), Aftab Ahmed Soomro and Siraj Ahmed Memon (stamp vendors) and Abdul Ghaffar Marri (Notary Public).
It is pertinent to mention that NAB had filed this reference in the accountability court in 2023, alleging Rs5.8 billion embezzlement in funds allocated for land acquisition for the M-6 Motorway in districts Matiari and Naushehro Feroze. The case included several government officials, private contractors, and individuals, with a total of 42 persons named as accused.
While 12 have now been acquitted, the reference against the remaining 30 accused, including suspended DC Matiari Adnan Rasheed and absconding/suspended DC Naushehro Feroze Tashfeen Alam, is still under trial in Accountability Court No. 1.

Punjab finalises new local government draft
The Punjab government has finalised the draft of a new local government system, party sources confirmed on Wednesday, with the proposed Local Government Act 2025 expected to be passed in the provincial assembly after the budget session. According to party insiders, the new system will eliminate direct elections for union council chairmen and vice-chairmen. Instead, elected councillors will select the top representatives. Furthermore, the method of councillor elections at the ward level is also being revised. Under the new mechanism, councillors will contest elections across the entire union council rather than individual wards. Party sources further revealed that, unlike the previous model, financial and administrative powers will now be devolved to tehsil councils instead of district councils. As part of the upcoming fiscal plan, the Punjab government has earmarked Rs5 billion specifically for the conduct of local government elections. In the first phase, the assembly will approve the budget, followed by the passage of the new Local Government Act 2025. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters in Lahore, Punjab Minister Local Government Zeeshan Rafique said the legislative process concerning the new law was expected to be completed by July.

Police bust honey trap racket in Pindi

PHOTO: PEXELS A honey trap gang allegedly operating in Rawalpindi has been exposed, with a police sub-inspector and a government lawyer found involved in aiding the network. An FIR has been registered at Chakala police station against the gang leader and accomplices, including Sub-Inspector Azhar Iqbal Gondal and government lawyer Nadeem Sultani. According to the complaint filed by ASI Ehsanullah, the gang extorted large sums from citizens using women in honey trap schemes. Charges include extortion, threats, aiding crime, and violations under the Anti-Rape Investigation and Trial Act and Police Order. The accused, Nosherwan alias Niazi, Zil Shah, Qaiser Mehmood, Rashid Ali, Sub-Inspector Azhar Iqbal Gondal, former constable Mohsin Gondal, lawyer Nadeem Sultani, and fake lawyer Ali Gondal, allegedly lured victims through women, lodged false cases using forged IDs, and demanded hefty sums for out-of-court settlements after arranging fake medical and DNA reports. The gang, including officers, maintained regular contact with law enforcement and judicial officials. Gondal and Sultani allegedly received a share of the extorted money and facilitated the gang in police stations and courts. The gang leaders — Nosherwan alias Niazi and Afzal Bukhari alias Zil Shah — were arrested in Sohawa, Jhelum. Their arrest prevented the gang from producing forged ID holders in court. Authorities say the gang had filed multiple bogus cases across Rawalpindi and other districts, using deception and fraud to extort large sums under the guise of legal action. Investigations are underway.
