Officials say complaints about noise, drug use, panhandling and illegal parking have risen over the last six years. Critics, however, worry the crackdown may disproportionately target low-income residents.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch say the pilot program is about making sure every New Yorker feels seen, heard and safe by responding to non-emergency 311 concerns.
Officials say complaints about these low-level offenses have doubled in the last six years, with panhandling seeing a 200% increase.
But the New York Civil Liberties Union warns that the new enforcement is a return to the so-called "broken windows" police strategy employed by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and fears it will lead to police harassment and profiling of people of color.
The NYPD commissioner has insisted that is not the case and the new unit is not a return to zero tolerance policing.

The program will be evaluated over the course of the next two months before expanding.

Alleged moped thieves terrorize riders in Queens, police say
QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — A trio of alleged moped thieves has been terrorizing riders in Queens for the past few months, police said Tuesday. The suspects have allegedly threatened riders with a knife before taking their mopeds in a spate of incidents from June to August, according to the NYPD. The spree started when a 27-year-old man riding a moped was hit in the head with a chain and robbed at knifepoint on 107th Street at around 11:30 p.m. on June 30, police said. EMS staff treated the victim at the scene for minor injuries. The trio struck twice on Aug. 7 when they ambushed moped riders on Linden Boulevard and then again on 103rd Street and Rockway Boulevard. The suspects allegedly took the victims' keys and rode off on the stolen mopeds, police said. The men allegedly stole two more mopeds on July 20 near 101st Street and Drew Avenue and 122nd Street and Liberty Avenue, cops said. There were no injuries in the July and August incidents. Police are still searching for the suspects. The journalist behind a bombshell report detailing the staggering amount of money that President Donald Trump's second term is raking in for the first family said Trump and Co. have cashed in on the presidency at an unprecedented rate. The New Yorker's David Kirkpatrick calculated that Trump, his children, and their spouses will earn more than $3.4 billion thanks largely to deals, transactions, and investments that almost certainly would not have happened if Trump were just a real estate agent and reality TV star. During an interview Sunday with MSNBC's The Weekend Primetime, Kirkpatrick said other presidents and their children have found ways of 'cashing in' with book deals and speaker fees but that it was all 'small change' compared to the Trump family deals.

Slain NYPD officer's wife gives birth to another son: 'Their father's legacy of service'
The wife of a slain New York City Police Department officer killed in a mass shooting at a Manhattan high-rise last month gave birth to the couple's third child this week, the agency announced. 'Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world,' NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote in a Monday, Aug. 18 post on X. 'Last night, Jamila Islam, the wife of Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, gave birth to their beautiful son, Arham.' A nearly four-year NYPD veteran, Islam was killed in a mass shooting on July 28, in a skyscraper where he was working a paid security detail. At the time of his death, in a statement on the precinct's social media, city leaders called Islam 'a husband, father, and dedicated public servant' and said he was survived by two young sons and his wife, who had been expecting the couple's third child. In the commissioner's birth announcement on Monday, she wrote the newborn boy joins two big brothers, Ahyan and Azhaan. 'Together, they will carry forward their father's legacy of service and courage − a legacy the NYPD will guard and uphold with the same devotion Didar gave to this city,' Tisch wrote.
