SINGAPORE – Former English Premier League winners Robert Huth, Wes Morgan and Luis Boa Morte will be in town for the July 25-27 Soccer7sSeries, which will feature seven-a-side men's open, women's and over-35 masters tournaments at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Huth, 40, was part of the Chelsea team who won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2004-05 and 2005-06, and later formed a solid centre-back partnership with Wes Morgan, now 41, at Leicester City who clinched the 2015-16 Premier League crown against all odds.
Boa Morte, 47, was with Arsenal when they won the 1997-98 title before turning out for the Southampton, Fulham and West Ham United.
Among notable teams who have already confirmed their participation in the Singapore event are England's Coventry City and Queens Park Rangers, as well as Brazilian sides Corinthians and Vasco da Gama, who are set to bring their rising stars from their Under-21 and academy teams for the men's open competition, while German outfit Borussia Dortmund will play in the masters category.
Asian and Asean teams are also involved, with China's Shanghai Shenhua, Indonesia's Persib Bandung, Malaysia's Selangor, and the host's Geylang International and Singapore Football Club (SFC) taking part.
The men's open will feature 16 teams, while 10 teams will play in the women's and masters tournaments. All the 95 games over the three days will be played across two seven-minute halves on a full-size pitch.
Fans can expect to see former Lions and centurions such as Shahril Ishak, 41; Khairul Amri, 40; and Daniel Bennett, 47 – who have 412 caps among them – strut their stuff with SFC in the masters competition.
Former national captain Shahril, who noted that the event will be held two weeks before Singapore turns 60, said: 'We are excited to have the world's best sevens talent coming to celebrate our nation's anniversary with us. I can't wait to take to the field and compete against such high-calibre opponents.'
Off the pitch, there will also be activities to entertain fans and families, who will be treated to a host of Singaporean tastes and flavours.
Soccer7sSeries chief executive officer Dom Lane said: 'Singapore has truly become a global sporting destination, so we're delighted to bring the Soccer7sSeries to the country.
'Fans will be treated to faster football... we have four games played every hour. We have some exciting names including ex-Premier League winners and Champions League competitors and already lots of great teams confirmed from Europe, South America and the Asia-Pacific with even more to announce.'
Ticket prices range from $8 for children and senior citizens to $35 for general admission daily passes. Weekend passes from $25 to $60 and hospitality passes from $200 to $600 are also available at www.soccer7sseries.com

'We called our pitches Old Trafford': Cunha's childhood fantasy becomes reality

MANCHESTER, England - Manchester United's stadium will not feel entirely unfamiliar to Matheus Cunha when the Brazilian makes his home debut for his new team next season. It is almost like he has been playing at Old Trafford for years. A day after United completed the signing of Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, the dynamic forward said he grew up in the Brazilian beach city of Joao Pessoa dreaming of one day playing for the club. "It is hard to find a way to explain this club to me," the 26-year-old said in an interview with United's in-house media. "My house didn't have the channel to watch the Premier League. My cousin's house didn't have the channel. "Only in my grandma's house, we can watch the Premier League, so we organised to go every weekend. And for me, it was always a bit inside of me, this club. When I play with (my cousin) in the street, on the beach, on the gravel pitch, we called these pitches 'Old Trafford.' Imagine. "So, wow, it's so hard to be here now, thinking about the past — it's very emotional for me." Cunha scored 15 Premier League goals for Wolves last season. He also helped Brazil qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, setting up the only goal in a decisive 1-0 win at home to Paraguay. His move to Manchester raised some eyebrows after United finished a woeful 15th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for any European football next season. But he said the club and its former stars had left a lasting impression. "It's hard to talk about because I remember the whole squad at the time that I started to watch," he said. "In the front, (Wayne) Rooney, wow. Someone that I think I have a lot of particulars in my game, because I always give everything. "I remember he was the No. 10 and everyone loved the skills of the player in his shirt, but he brings more. He goes to the grass (slide tackle) to take the ball, this kind of energy inside of him was a big example. "(Cristiano) Ronaldo, everyone knows, it is easy to talk about him. Ryan Giggs. Everyone. I can imagine the team, it started with (Edwin) Van der Sar in the goal, Rio Ferdinand, (Nemanja) Vidic, the defenders, Paul Scholes, wow, (Michael) Carrick. The team for me, honestly, was a big impact for my teenage years." REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Zverev sets up Stuttgart semi-final with impressive Shelton, Fritz also through

Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Top seed and home favourite Alexander Zverev beat Brandon Nakashima 7-5 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open on Friday while Americans Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton also reached the last four. Zverev is seeking his first grasscourt title and he was involved in a tight opening set which was tied at 5-5 when the German switched gears in the final two games to clinch it. But Zverev was far more dominant against his American opponent in the second set as he finished the match with 31 winners in a contest that lasted 90 minutes. "I'm in the semi-finals now and now I really want to focus on trying to do the best I can," Zverev said. "I know the opponents are going to get tougher but I'm really happy on the court right now I'm really happy in Stuttgart and I'm looking forward to the next two days." Zverev will play third seed Shelton next after the American, who was virtually unstoppable on his first serve, beat Jiri Lehecka 6-4 6-4, firing 18 aces. Shelton was so dominant in the second set that he did not lose a single point on serve while he won 100% of his first-serve points in the match, with victory ensuring he will break into the top 10 for the first time in his career. Marton Fucsovics had beaten Fritz in straight sets in Stuttgart two years ago but this time the American, who has yet to drop a set at the tournament, came out on top in a dominant 6-3 6-4 victory. Although Fritz was involved in some long baseline rallies, he relied on his serve, sending 12 aces past the Hungarian to set up a semi-final clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime, who beat the 17-year-old German Justin Engel 7-6(3) 6-3. Engel had claimed his first professional victory on grass earlier this week when he beat James Duckworth, following it up with an upset win over seventh seed Alex Michelsen, but beating Auger-Aliassime proved to be a step too far for the teenager. "His serve was so incredibly good today that I felt pressure in my own service games," Engel said. "But it was great fun playing in front of this crowd again. I can't wait to play here again next year." REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
