Mitchell Starc's 100th Test: ‘Huge honour, probably something to reflect on when I'm finished'
Right through his career he has pushed himself to the limits in Australian colours and choosing to skip the IPL riches to manage workload. Having suffered back, knee, ankle, calf, foot and shin injuries early in his career, he's since refused to leave his side a man down. At one point there were serious doubts if he could play Test cricket for long. But this weekend at Kingston, Starc would get his 100th Baggy Green cap.
'I've looked after or tried to look after my body and be able to find ways through pain barriers to make an impact for the team,' Starc told cricket.com.au. 'I've been a player that's been injured and left them a man down before and I never wanted to do that again. So to find ways when things weren't going well, or things were sore, or if I was carrying something, to still be able to push through and finish games and still be impactful, was part of it. But I've also had a lot of help along the way, with trainers and physios and my best mates being teammates, all helped me to keep playing and wanting to compete and still be a part of the group,' Strac added.
Having overseen Australia's huge transition, he formed a lethal pair with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. Apart from winning the 50-over World Cup twice, Starc was also part of the Australian squad that won the World Test Championship in 2023. Having began his age-group career as a wicketkeeper, Starc said he never thought he would feature in as many Tests.
'I didn't think I'd play one (Test),' said Starc. '(It's) pretty humbling to play that much. A huge honour, probably something more to reflect on when I'm finished. Anytime you're mentioned alongside some of those names, like Glenn (and) I've been fortunate enough to play with Mitchell Johnson (73 Tests), 'Sidds' (Peter Siddle, 67 Tests) and 'Rhino' (Ryan Harris, 27 Tests) and to have a bit of relationship with Brett (Lee, 76 Tests), I've been very lucky through cricket to a meet those guys and then play alongside or learn different pieces from them,' Starc said.

Shubman Gill ‘ready to take over' ODI captaincy after England tour show: How long will Rohit Sharma continue?
India may have ended the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in a 2-2 draw — extending their 15-year wait for a Test series win in England — but the contest offered more positives and promise than many expected. Chief among them was Shubman Gill's captaincy. Neither head coach Gautam Gambhir nor chief selector Ajit Agarkar's backing could immediately quell the doubts. Gill was named Player of the Series for leading India's batting charge, scoring 754 runs in 10 innings — the most ever by an Indian captain in a Test series and second only to Don Bradman's 810 runs in the 1936–37 Ashes. Following his heroics, former cricketer Mohammad Kaif backed Gill to take over India's ODI captaincy as well, even as questions grow around Rohit Sharma's international future. 'He will get the ODI captaincy as well because we don't know how long Rohit Sharma will continue as captain. Gill is ready to take over. He scores in white-ball. He has performed well as captain here in Tests and led from the front. When you go with a young team, you have to do both things – score with the bat and do well as captain. A brilliant tour for him overall,' he said on his YouTube channel. 'Shubman Gill, as captain, created opportunities with both hands in this series. When he became captain, there were many questions as to why he was made captain, looking at his Test record. A young captain reached England under a lot of pressure with a young team. The ODIs remain the only format in which Rohit remains active. He retired from the T20Is in June 2024 after leading India to the T20 World Cup win in Barbados and then announced his shock exit from Test cricket in May earlier this year, just weeks before the announcement of the India squad for the tour of England. Although the chatter around the future of Rohit in ODI cricket is slowly gathering pace, BCCI had confirmed upon his Test retirement that the 37-year-old will remain the skipper in the 50-over format. Earlier in May, Rohit's childhood coach Dinesh Lad said that the India great would like to bow out from international cricket by winning the ODI World Cup, which has eluded India since 2011 when the team led by MS Dhoni lifted the trophy. "His [Rohit's] aim is to win the 2027 ODI World Cup and then retire," Lad told PTI. "His target was the World Test Championship, but unfortunately we didn't qualify. Now, it's the 2027 World Cup... I also want him to win the 2027 World Cup and then retire." The 2027 Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November. Rohit will next appear in the three-match ODI series in Australia, which will begin on October 19 in Perth.

Sponsor mulls legal action if Argentina does not play in Kerala this year
The Reporter Broadcasting Company, the Kerala Government's commercial partner for bringing the Argentina football team and its star Lionel Messi to Kerala, has said that it might be forced to take legal recourse if the World Cup champion does not play in the State in October or November. Reporter, the sponsor for the team's visit to Kerala, said it had paid the full amount of ₹130 crore to the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on June 6 this year as per the agreement signed in December 2024. 'As per the agreement, we had sent the full amount and they (AFA) also acknowledged it. But after five days, we received an email asking whether we are okay with having the match in September 2026,' said Anto Augustine, managing director of Reporter, on Tuesday. 'That violates the terms of the agreement we have with the AFA. We are not okay with it. As per our agreement with the AFA, the deal was to have the match in October-November this year. They had even told us that the match can be held in October and we had fulfilled all the terms as per the agreement.' The next World Cup will be held in June-July 2026 in Canada, Mexico and the USA and Augustine feels the scene could be very different after the quadrennial event. 'We are interested in having the match only this year, as per the agreed terms. If the agreement is not honoured, there will be huge financial loss. So we may have to handle this legally,' he said. Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman, who had announced that Argentina would play in Kerala in October, had told the media in Kozhikode on Monday that that the team would not visit Kerala this year. The minister explained that the team had difficulties in visiting the State in October. However, Anto felt it was not proper to announce that Messi and Argentina would not be coming to Kerala till the AFA officially declares that the team would not playing in the State this year.
