Scammed by cabby, US vlogger posts harass video on YouTube

Time of India28-05-2025

Kolkata: An American travel content creator was allegedly scammed and threatened by a taxi driver and his accomplice, a tout, shortly after arriving at Kolkata airport. The YouTuber captured the incident on video, which has since gone viral on social media after being posted about nine days ago.
Kolkata Traffic Police, tagged in the video by multiple Kolkatans who lodged individual complaints, stated they are reviewing the content of the video and confirmed a preliminary probe was started. Bidhannagar cops also may be involved, given that most of the incident took place near a Rajarhat hotel.
Dustin, a US-born, Asia-based YouTuber with 22,000 subscribers, runs a YouTube channel where he shares his experiences exploring the culture, food, people, and hidden corners of multiple countries.
The incident occurred when he chose a local taxi over a ride-hailing service for his journey to a hotel on Park Street. Instead of taking him to his destination, the driver and an accomplice reportedly drove 15 km in the opposite direction to a similarly named hotel in Rajarhat.
When confronted, the situation escalated into threats and demands for additional payment.
"I showed you the hotel first, we agreed to this, and then you took me to the wrong hotel," Dustin can be heard saying in the video.

The initial fare of Rs 700 was increased to Rs 900 for dropping Dustin to Park Street. The accomplice, wearing a red shirt, was recorded speaking in Bengali, threatening violence against the tourist. According to translations, he said, "I have connections with the mafia, I'll drag him to a lonely place and break his bones.
"
The perpetrators eventually settled for Rs 800, claiming Rs 150 for "parking and petrol". The journey, which typically takes under an hour, lasted 100 minutes.
Despite the ordeal, Dustin kept a positive outlook. "This won't ruin India for me... but I'll never take a random taxi again," he said in the video.
In a subsequent clarification on his YouTube channel four days ago, Dustin emphasised that the incident was isolated and not representative of his broader experience in Kolkata. "I had an amazing time in Kolkata and I met incredible people there, super friendly, only complaint is Kolkata has tooooo many sweets :D This taxi driver incident was a one-time incident and it didn't change anything for me and how I feel about India, Kolkata or anyone else," he wrote.

Anti-terrorist squad deployed in Puri ahead of Rath

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police, for the first time, deployed an anti-terrorist squad (ATS) in Puri ahead of the June 27 Rath Yatra with the govt anticipating over 10 lakh people, including potential VVIP guests such as Union ministers and chief ministers from NDA-governed states, likely to attend the event. Deployment of ATS is significant given the current Indo-Pak relations and the govt sending out invitations to the president, prime minister and various state chief ministers for the annual celebration. The ATS, consisting of urban warfare-trained commandos from Odisha Police's special tactical group, took positions outside Jagannath Temple on Tuesday, a day before Wednesday's Debasnan Purnima ceremony, an essential pre-Rath Yatra festival. Odisha Police recently positioned Rakshak, an armoured vehicle with bullet-proof capabilities, outside the temple. This vehicle is designed to resist intense artillery fire and explosive devices. "The ATS deployment has enhanced our counter-terrorism capabilities at this strategic installation. Their presence will supplement our overall security arrangements for Debasnan Purnima on Wednesday and Rath Yatra on June 27. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Safety of the temple and devotees is our priority," Puri SP Vinit Agrawal said. IGP (central range) S Praveen Kumar and Agrawal inspected security arrangements for Debasnan Purnima. On the occasion of Debasnan Purnima, the sibling deities — Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra — would be given a ceremonial bath on Snan Mandap (bathing dais) on the shrine premises and would appear in Hati Besha in the evening. The temple administration has urged servitors not to stand in front of the idols. Devotees have been asked not to touch the deities during darshan. "We expect heavy footfall of devotees like last year. Convenience of devotees and smooth darshan is our priority. Nearly 70 platoons of police force have been deployed for security, crowd management and traffic regulation," Kumar said. Anticipating over 10 lakh devotees on Rath Yatra, Odisha Police have also emphasised on comprehensive CCTV monitoring. "Live surveillance using AI-enabled cameras and crowd control would be essential for public safety. We are also laying focus on gathering intelligence and securing the Puri coastline against possible threats," a senior police officer said.

Gujarat high court orders bank to defreeze account not linked to offence

Ahmedabad: After a bank froze the account of an Ahmedabad company at the request of Andhra Pradesh police during the investigation of a cheating case, the Gujarat high court ordered the bank to de-freeze the account. The court found that the transaction involving the account was unrelated to the offence under investigation. The case involved Capital Engraving, a company manufacturing advanced gravure cylinders. It had supplied goods worth Rs 9.65 lakh to Melancia Foods Pvt Ltd from Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh last year. Melancia transferred Rs 4.54 lakh as part payment in Sept last year. Around then, an individual named Gnana Prasad, proprietor of Latha Priya Enterprise and a regular customer of Melancia, filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell in Tirupati, alleging cheating of Rs 2.01 lakh. Investigating sleuths found that Melancia had transferred money to Capital Engraving's account at the Science City branch of Kalupur Commercial Co-Operative Bank Ltd. Police issued a notice to the bank, asking it to freeze the account under the provisions of Sections 94 and 106 of BNS. The bank complied with police's directions. In May, Capital Engraving requested the bank and AP police to de-freeze their account, explaining that the money transferred from Melancia was purely a business transaction. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Bhatt contended that the money transferred by Melancia to the account was part of a business transaction and unrelated to the alleged offence. However, the account was frozen merely because Melancia had transferred the amount. Upon reviewing the bank statement, the high court stated that the money transferred was related to a business transaction. "Considering all the aforesaid, since there is nothing on record to show the connection between the account of the petitioner and the offence under investigation at Alipiri police station, the present petition deserves consideration… The present petition is allowed." The high court ordered the bank account to be de-frozen after the bank lien marked the amount of Rs 2.01 lakh.

‘Fentanyl Is Killing Americans': FBI Chief Says It Starts With China And Passes Through India

New Delhi, Washington D.C.: When the new boss of America's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Kash Patel, sat down with Joe Rogan for an episode of his ultra-popular podcast, he did not hold back. He was neither cryptic nor vague. He dropped bombs that echo across borders. 'I literally just got off the phone with the Indian government. I said, I need your help,' he said. It was a warning wrapped in urgency. A man raised by Gujarati immigrants, now helming the FBI, calling on India – not out of courtesy but necessity. Patel painted a sharp picture. The United States is drowning in fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that killed over 74,000 Americans in 2023 alone. But the drug does not only appear on American streets. It travels. And India, he says, has found itself in the middle of a dirty global route – a China-linked fentanyl supply chain. 'They are going to places like India, and I am also doing operations in India. They are having the Mexican cartels now make this fentanyl down in Mexico still,' he revealed. "I just got off the phone with the Indian govt. I told them I need their help," FBI Director Kash Patel tells Joe Rogan on fighting America's drugs crisis — Shashank Mattoo (@MattooShashank) June 10, 2025 India is not using fentanyl, but it is being used. 'You don't hear fentanyl deaths in India. You don't really hear fentanyl deaths in England, Australia, New Zealand or Five Eyes partners in Canada. The CCP have used it as a directed approach because we are their adversary,' Patel told Rogan. That is a bold claim and a chilling one. China's not after cash, Patel said, it is after chaos. 'They are not making a ton of money off it. So it is really just for that purpose,' he insisted. That purpose? 'Why don't we go and take out generations of young men and women who might grow up to serve in the United States military or become a cop or become a teacher?' he asked. It is not just America's southern border in play anymore. The supply chain, Patel says, is morphing, heading north. 'They are flying it into Vancouver. They are taking the precursors up to Canada, manufacturing it up there and doing their global distribution routes from up there because we were being so effective down south,' he claimed. India's role is not passive anymore. The FBI is in. Patel says American agents are working directly on Indian soil, hand-in-hand with top Indian law enforcement. 'We are going to find these companies that buy it, and we are going to shut them down. We are going to sanction them. We are going to arrest them where we can. We are going to indict them in America if we can. We are going to indict them in India if we can,' he claimed. For India, this cooperation is a new test. For Patel, it is personal. His Indian heritage is not only a footnote in his resume. It is a cornerstone of his drive to forge serious ties with New Delhi. The fentanyl crisis may be global. But is it targeted? That is the question Patel raised and one that stunned many listeners. He believes the drug is not merely a public health emergency. It is a 'tier one national security threat'. And he is asking Five Eyes allies, including India, to act before it is too late. 'The fentanyl itself is not being deployed into your country, but it is there being manufactured. The CCP just has not directed it at you yet, and they know that,' Patel warned. With no public response yet from Indian or Chinese officials, Patel's words still hang in the air. But one thing is clear: India just became a frontline partner in America's war on fentanyl. And this war may be a lot more geopolitical than we thought.
