Rain queers cops' rally day car parking pitch

Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police is facing a new challenge in managing vehicle parking for the upcoming Shahid Diwas rally on Monday, as persistent rainfall threatens to render designated parking fields unusable. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The fresh spell of rain on Friday, with more occasional rain predicted even on Saturday, has left cops worried as they believe the Maidan area can be filled with slush. The traffic department, which initially planned to utilise various fields across the city for parking buses and cars of parade attendees, is now frantically searching for alternative solutions on the main roads, stretching between Strand Road and APC Road. "We are exploring all possible options to accommodate vehicles coming from the districts," said a senior traffic official from Lalbazar, stating that they were fixing specific zones for parking for each separate district, as is always the practice. In response to the crisis, traffic guards are considering utilising empty streets within their jurisdictions. The northern section of APC Road, which typically remains vacant during such events, is being evaluated as a potential parking area. Additionally, parts of Burrabazar-Posta, which are expected to be empty due to restrictions on goods vehicles during the parade, are also being considered. "Even if the weather improves later this week, the waterlogged fields may not dry up sufficiently to be used as parking spaces," said a traffic officer. "We need to instruct the drivers well in advance and guide them so that we can adhere to the high court order and ensure there is no traffic jam during their movement," said an officer. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The situation is particularly challenging as several schools and colleges will remain open on the parade day. Updates regarding alternative parking arrangements will be communicated to parade participants and the public in the coming days, said Lalbazar. On Friday, CP Manoj Verma met Howrah and Bidhannagar cops to discuss their rally preparedness. He will meet senior officers from the two 24 Parganas on Saturday.

Cops give lane-cutting lessons to school kids

1 2 3 Kolkata: School students who visited Kolkata Traffic Police headquarters at Lalbazar on Wednesday posed a few questions that stumped even senior officers. During their visit to the traffic control room on Road Safety Week , students from Sri Chaitanya Techno School, Shyambazar Vidyamandir High School, Scottish Church Collegiate School and Mahabir Institutelearnt about police responses to traffic violations, the nature of their work, and the use of traffic cameras in their daily operations. Senior officers, led by Additional CP Subhankar Sinha Sarkar, faced questions about the "zero presence" of police during early morning hours, the tactics for identifying drunk drivers, and cop role in assisting students during waterlogging. At Park Street crossing, the South Traffic Guard organised direct on-ground training. Pankaj Modak, OC of Park Circus Traffic Guard, and Prasenjit Chatterjee of Vidyasagar Guard visited Pratt Memorial and St Teresa, where they highlighted the importance of wearing helmets and not cutting lanes. The chaos can largely be blamed on poor planning, claim officers. The city's best schools are all located within a small belt of central and south Kolkata, with most of these schools starting between 7.30 am and 8.30 am. There are several other pockets in the city where the same problem arises at different hours of the day, with the challenge restricted to a few zones.

Kolkata Police starts fresh vehicle count at Chingrighata

1 2 Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police has begun a new round of counting of vehicles at Chingrighata following multiple changes in traffic flow towards Sector V from the Kolkata side. At present, the 'traffic tails' reach Metropolitan. Previously, it would reach up to Ambedkar Setu during peak morning hours. Senior officers said the audit will help them assess whether traffic blocks for construction of the underpass, a Bailey bridge, the expansion of the main crossing and upcoming Metro work would affect the traffic flow or not. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Special focus is being given to ascertain the total number of two-wheelers moving in the area, which is reportedly witnessing a surge in private vehicles following the restrictions put on movement of app-based minibuses. Recently, Kolkata Traffic Police decided not to allow any 16-seater and 26-seater vehicle — usually the app-based minibuses carrying IT employees to the IT sector and back towards Howrah and Behala-Joka — to use the Maa Flyover. With app buses from Behala and Howrah forced to move below the flyover, travel time has increased by at least an hour. On top of that, they are also not being allowed to take the Chingrighata Flyover. This has led several Sector V-New Town-Rajarhat office-goers to opt for their own two-wheelers or four-wheelers or app bikes, leading to a rise in private vehicles in the area. "We might revisit this policy after the counting is completed," said a Lalbazar source. The per-minute traffic volume discharge at the Metropolitan end of Maa Flyover during office hours is now back to the pre-Covid era. "We have 350 plus vehicles per minute now on this stretch after vehicles get over the 8 km stretch in a jiffy," said a traffic police source. The police stated that these app-based minibuses occupy wider space and often tend to cut lanes even when they do not overspeed. "There are three key corners where vehicles take sharper turns on the flyover. These are places where these vehicles often create hurdles for others to negotiate space," stated an officer. The police have already allowed special concessions for these vehicles to take a right turn from under the Chingrighata Flyover towards Sector V instead of Chingrighata Flyover to decongest the flyover.

Cops send civic bodies list of 446 ‘dangerous spots'

Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police has identified 464 spots in the city that need immediate attention to prevent accidents and traffic issues. The repair work needs to be completed before the monsoon sets in completely, the Kolkata Police stated on Saturday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The list is being shared with all civic agencies, including KMC and PWD. The spots include potholed roads, loose branches blocking signals, and even naked wires hanging loose from posts. According to police, the list was prepared based on ground-level analysis, including photography and videography of each spot by traffic cops attached to the 25 guards. Among the guards that reported the maximum problem points are the Headquarters Traffic Guard (31 points), Bhowanipore (37), Ultadanga (40), and Diamond Harbour Traffic Guard (34). Amongst the important highlights in the report are the spots on AJC Bose Road, Dargah Road, CIT Road, Strand Road, Christopher Road, and EM Bypass (between Ruby Metro and Kalikapur crossing) where the road surface is pathetic. Across DH Road and Banamali Naskar Road in Behala or Bidhan Sarani or Paharpur Road, the problem chiefly is about naked wires. "We prepared a list ahead of the monsoon and requested the authorities to look into it. Now we are preparing a more detailed report. However, these spots need immediate attention to stop accidents. It is easier to manage traffic and people during Durga Pujas when the condition of the roads is good," said a DCP. "The condition of Strand Road near Howrah bridge, for example, is so bad that we don't know where to put the barricade. The patchwork in some places is shoddy, and on some stretches, two different levels have been created on the road surface," a senior police officer posted in central Kolkata said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Unlike other years, we started the job earlier to give time to civic agencies to carry out repair work since Durga Puja is in Sept this year. We will attach photographs of the spot and a landmark so that these potholes can be easily identified by the agencies. In certain areas, like Biren Roy Road West and RG Kar Road, our cops are on duty for 14 hours to ensure traffic is not stalled," a senior police officer said.

Pvt bus debut for track-your-bus app

1 2 3 Kolkata: While only a few buses on route 223 are presently being tracked on the "Where Is My Bus App", an entire fleet of 106 buses plying on three routes – 45, 45A, and 45B – can be tracked on the app beginning next week. Over 84 buses out of 106 have installed new smartphones for this purpose. Training was completed on Saturday at Garia. The transport department has set July 22 as the cut-off date for complete data of bus workers on four other routes – K1, 219, 79B, and L238. These buses will be integrated into the platform the same day. A Durga Puja deadline is being pursued to bring all routes under this app. Once tracked through the VLTD system, both transport department officers and cops will also know if the buses are speeding using the app that all 45 route bus drivers will install in their smartphones. At the meeting with Kolkata Traffic Police on Saturday, bus owners also raised their concerns about cop excesses. Top officials told them that action would be taken on sergeants if evidence with specific complaints reaches them. DC (Traffic) Shrikant Jagannathrao Yeilwad discussed passenger feedback with bus transporters about complaints of conductors charging "excessively" and forcing passengers to get off "at a spot of their choice". Cops warned that strict action will follow if these basic traffic rules are flouted. "All bus drivers are required to scan their vehicle's designated QR code and install the official tracking application prior to commencing their trips," said Titu Saha of City Suburban Bus Service.
