Cops start arresting bus drivers for rash driving to make city roads safer

Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police will now arrest bus drivers if they drive dangerously, in addition to imposing steep fines and recommending the temporary suspension of licences. According to the police, dangerous driving will include zigzag overtakes, jumping red signals, or driving well above the maximum speed limit. Even not allowing passengers to get on or off at the designated bus stop will amount to dangerous driving. The driver will be charged under BNS 281, pertaining to rash or negligent driving or riding on a public way. Although a similar drive began in 2021, it was discontinued following protests from bus operators. The first such case was registered at the Entally police station on Monday after the driver failed to stop at the designated bus stop. "It was around 8:45 am on Monday at the CIT Road-Ananda Palit Road crossing that I found a bus moving from north to south did not stop at the Paddapukur Island bus stop. The driver, Laxmi Kant Shaw, was arrested," the arrest memo stated. Senior officers are likely to meet over this issue since commissioner Manoj Verma has asked his officers at the monthly crime conference to take effective measures to keep the number of accidents at a minimum. Sources in the traffic police, however, said that a quick-fix solution will not be possible, but spot action will make drivers responsible. "Commercial vehicle drivers pass all fines to owners. That does not serve the purpose," said an officer. According to the police, if speeding can be curbed amongst commercial vehicle drivers, the wrong notion of blaming each accident on them will stop. "Accidents do not always happen due to negligence on the driver's part, and they often get blamed for no fault of theirs. The fact remains that pedestrians and passengers too come near the front left corner of the bus, which is traditionally a blind spot for the drivers. Additionally, on several occasions, resoled tyres and the condition of roads contribute to accidents. But by making spot arrests, we can at least send the message and make our intentions of making the roads safer clear to the citizens," said an officer.

Mind the gap: Cop focus on safe distance between vehicles

Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police launched a comprehensive awareness campaign titled 'Mind the Gap' on Friday, focusing on the growing menace of tailgating, which has led to multiple freak road accidents and even road rage incidents across the city in recent months. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Tailgating is driving too closely behind another vehicle. The initiative, which combines both digital and on-ground efforts, aims to educate drivers about maintaining safe distances between vehicles. "We observed a concerning rise in road incidents linked to tailgating. In the past three months alone, we received dozens of complaints where tailgating was the primary cause," said a senior officer. The campaign will utilise social media platforms, including Facebook, X, and Instagram, to disseminate educational content and safety guidelines. Additionally, traffic officers plan to conduct awareness sessions at major intersections across the city. According to police data, tailgating-related incidents increase during peak hours on major arterial roads like EM Bypass and AJC Bose Road. The campaign introduces the "three-second" rule — maintaining a minimum three-second gap between vehicles — as a standard safety measure. Digital displays at key traffic signals will demonstrate proper distances to be maintained between vehicles and showcase real-time examples of safe driving practices. "We are not incorporating a penalty right now and clubbing it with an MV Act offence. We expect better driver behaviour at the crossings and even during parking," said an ACP. Cops also plan to partner with several driving schools and automotive associations to extend the campaign's reach. Commuter Sumit Banerjee hailed the initiative. "I have experienced aggressive tailgating numerous times. It is dangerous. The two-wheeler riders are the worst offenders." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Cops will monitor the campaign's effectiveness through CCTV footage. It will run for an initial period of a few weeks, after which the police will evaluate its success and consider extending it based on the results achieved. For more information about the campaign, citizens can visit the Kolkata Traffic Police website or call their helpline at 1073.

Scammed by cabby, US vlogger posts harass video on YouTube

Kolkata: An American travel content creator was allegedly scammed and threatened by a taxi driver and his accomplice, a tout, shortly after arriving at Kolkata airport. The YouTuber captured the incident on video, which has since gone viral on social media after being posted about nine days ago. Kolkata Traffic Police, tagged in the video by multiple Kolkatans who lodged individual complaints, stated they are reviewing the content of the video and confirmed a preliminary probe was started. Bidhannagar cops also may be involved, given that most of the incident took place near a Rajarhat hotel. Dustin, a US-born, Asia-based YouTuber with 22,000 subscribers, runs a YouTube channel where he shares his experiences exploring the culture, food, people, and hidden corners of multiple countries. The incident occurred when he chose a local taxi over a ride-hailing service for his journey to a hotel on Park Street. Instead of taking him to his destination, the driver and an accomplice reportedly drove 15 km in the opposite direction to a similarly named hotel in Rajarhat. When confronted, the situation escalated into threats and demands for additional payment. "I showed you the hotel first, we agreed to this, and then you took me to the wrong hotel," Dustin can be heard saying in the video. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Conheça o óculos militar que os homens 40+ querem Óculos Max Saiba Mais Undo The initial fare of Rs 700 was increased to Rs 900 for dropping Dustin to Park Street. The accomplice, wearing a red shirt, was recorded speaking in Bengali, threatening violence against the tourist. According to translations, he said, "I have connections with the mafia, I'll drag him to a lonely place and break his bones. " The perpetrators eventually settled for Rs 800, claiming Rs 150 for "parking and petrol". The journey, which typically takes under an hour, lasted 100 minutes. Despite the ordeal, Dustin kept a positive outlook. "This won't ruin India for me... but I'll never take a random taxi again," he said in the video. In a subsequent clarification on his YouTube channel four days ago, Dustin emphasised that the incident was isolated and not representative of his broader experience in Kolkata. "I had an amazing time in Kolkata and I met incredible people there, super friendly, only complaint is Kolkata has tooooo many sweets :D This taxi driver incident was a one-time incident and it didn't change anything for me and how I feel about India, Kolkata or anyone else," he wrote.
