Kolkata Police starts fresh vehicle count at Chingrighata

Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police has begun a new round of counting of vehicles at Chingrighata following multiple changes in traffic flow towards Sector V from the Kolkata side.
At present, the 'traffic tails' reach Metropolitan. Previously, it would reach up to Ambedkar Setu during peak morning hours.
Senior officers said the audit will help them assess whether traffic blocks for construction of the underpass, a Bailey bridge, the expansion of the main crossing and upcoming Metro work would affect the traffic flow or not.

Special focus is being given to ascertain the total number of two-wheelers moving in the area, which is reportedly witnessing a surge in private vehicles following the restrictions put on movement of app-based minibuses.
Recently, Kolkata Traffic Police decided not to allow any 16-seater and 26-seater vehicle — usually the app-based minibuses carrying IT employees to the IT sector and back towards Howrah and Behala-Joka — to use the Maa Flyover. With app buses from Behala and Howrah forced to move below the flyover, travel time has increased by at least an hour. On top of that, they are also not being allowed to take the Chingrighata Flyover.
This has led several Sector V-New Town-Rajarhat office-goers to opt for their own two-wheelers or four-wheelers or app bikes, leading to a rise in private vehicles in the area. "We might revisit this policy after the counting is completed," said a Lalbazar source.
The per-minute traffic volume discharge at the Metropolitan end of Maa Flyover during office hours is now back to the pre-Covid era. "We have 350 plus vehicles per minute now on this stretch after vehicles get over the 8 km stretch in a jiffy," said a traffic police source.
The police stated that these app-based minibuses occupy wider space and often tend to cut lanes even when they do not overspeed.
"There are three key corners where vehicles take sharper turns on the flyover. These are places where these vehicles often create hurdles for others to negotiate space," stated an officer. The police have already allowed special concessions for these vehicles to take a right turn from under the Chingrighata Flyover towards Sector V instead of Chingrighata Flyover to decongest the flyover.

Inside India's electric cargo revolution: who's winning, who's catching up, and what's next

New Delhi: India's electric L5 cargo segment — mostly three-wheeled goods carriers — has grown at a rapid 29.46% CAGR between FY2023 and FY2025. But FY2025 brought a twist: sales dipped 15% compared to the previous year. The reason? A subsidy cut under the PM E-Drive scheme, which now offers ₹2,500 per kW (capped at ₹25,000 per unit) — half of what the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) earlier provided to boost locally made E3Ws. Why the post-COVID surge happened The e-commerce boom has been the primary catalyst for demand. High-speed electric cargo vehicles offer lower total cost of ownership and minimal maintenance, making them attractive for last-mile logistics. Financing support has also expanded, with banks, OEMs, and EV-specific lenders offering customised loans and payment plans. According to JMK Research & Analytics, this combination of market demand, financing accessibility, and the entry of established ICE brands like Bajaj and TVS has transformed the segment's growth trajectory. Who's winning the L5 cargo race Mahindra has built a stronghold, grabbing 26% of the market in FY2025 with a diversified range and early gains from FAME II and state incentives. It also leads on EV penetration — 62% of its cargo sales in FY2025 were electric. Bajaj, a legacy ICE brand, entered the fray in June 2023 and quickly made its mark — 17% market share, 9% EV penetration, and a staggering 361% YoY growth in FY2025, backed by brand trust and 4,717 units sold in the year. E4W goods carriers: big growth, smaller base Electric four-wheeler cargo carriers have grown at an eye-popping 729% CAGR between FY2023 and FY2025, and even posted 9% YoY growth last year. Tata Motors is the dominant player here with 61% market share. But the segment still trails L5 E3Ws due to higher upfront costs, less manoeuvrability in tight city lanes, and fewer charging points for larger vehicles. A senior MHI (Ministry of Heavy Industries) said: 'We see electric cargo vehicles as critical to meeting India's 2030 clean mobility targets. The priority now is to align incentives with infrastructure growth so that both L5 three-wheelers and E4W goods carriers can scale sustainably.' What's next With India's e-commerce market showing no signs of slowing, electric cargo vehicles are set to become a backbone of last-mile delivery. In Tier 1 cities, fleet operators are already using 'porter systems' to move goods efficiently within city limits. Central and state incentives, including Maharashtra's new EV policy targeting 30% EV registrations and 50% adoption in fleet and utility vehicles by 2030, are expected to boost adoption.

Separate parking area for VIP, police cars at airport

1 2 Kolkata: Bidhannagar police has introduced a designated free parking area for VIP and police vehicles near the old domestic terminal to prevent unauthorised parking in front of the main airport terminal. For several years, vehicles with beacons or govt identification plates were parked outside the terminal for extended periods while waiting for passengers, despite rules allowing only seven minutes of free parking in the area. The penalty for overstaying is Rs 500, but these vehicles are rarely fined. The problem increased after lane dividers with reflective strips were installed along the terminal frontage, from exit gates 1A/B to 2A/B, to direct vehicles into lanes for pick-up, drop-off, and through movement since the start of the week. TOI highlighted over the past two days how these VIP vehicles occupy the first lane, leading to traffic congestion. We are in talks with the airport authorities to install a Flight Information Display System (FIDS), which shows arrivals, departures, gates, delays, and other real-time flight details, next to the VIP parking lot so that the drivers know the exact time of the flight arrivals," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Interested in Investing? Cyprus Offers Many Options Cyprus Invest | Search ads Undo Cops said they were urging the drivers of these VIP cars to move towards the terminal building only after the flight arrived and the passengers collected the luggage so as not to crowd outside the terminal. "Our officers will guide these vehicles to the terminal and ensure they no longer clog the channels," said the officer. Parking space for special cases has also been arranged at the third tier of the underground parking lot. The airport authorities and cops had tried a similar measure two years back but even then it hadn't paid off. Before the metro construction, a separate VIP parking lane existed under the elevated road to the departure terminal. This was removed to accommodate the project. On Wednesday, TOI found VIP vehicles were still parked near the terminal gates. These included state govt cars with beacons, police vehicles, and those belonging to politicians and magistrates. Some police and airport staff also parked motorcycles in the departure area. Under airport rules, vehicles can stay on the premises free for a maximum of seven minutes, with only three minutes allowed directly in front of the terminal gates. Longer stays require the use of the official parking zones. A senior airport official said the matter was discussed in coordination meetings, but the practice continues.
