Local veterans felt it was necessary to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States.
Veterans killed in the line of duty were all honored.
'It's always important to be here to recognize those men and women who paid that price for this country,' Alabama District 2 Rep. Shomari Figures said. 'You have to come out and recognize those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for this nation to be what it is to create the opportunities that we have and create the lifestyle that we have.'
The South Alabama Veterans Council put on the event at the Mobile National Cemetery.
Dozens were on hand to celebrate including elected officials and civic leaders from around the state.
'Those men and women who raise their right hand and pay honor and tribute and give a creed and take an oath, they understand what that means,' retired Marine James T. Averhart Jr. said. 'And at any given moment, a service member, despite what branch of service, they are ready to give their life when the time is called.'
Family members of U.S. military veterans in attendance said it's a day for all of Americans to be proud.

'My mom is a veteran, and she was in Iraq,' a family member of veteran Finley Gartman said. 'And I think it's important to honor the people who've laid down their lives to serve our country so that we can live the life we live today in the U.S.'

Are we watching a public breakup? Yesterday I wrote about Elon Musk's fall from power. Today he is beefing with the president on X, instead of picking up his phone to make a call. Hm! False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it! — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 5, 2025
