'Derby have fought for their chance to survive'

BBC News02-05-2025
I'm pretty sure I won't be the only one who still hasn't quite recovered from Saturday. An afternoon of frustration, jangled nerves, and finally euphoria. The away end at Hull on Saturday was something I haven't experienced from a Derby crowd since we beat Leeds away in the play-off semi-final second leg under Frank Lampard in 2019.It was like the Derby faithful knew something was on the horizon the moment we were awarded that free-kick.Encouraging and excitable cheers rang out from the away supporters as the referee blew his whistle and signalled for the foul. The kind of cheers you hear when your team are awarded a penalty, not a free-kick on the left flank. But Craig Forsyth's perfect cross, Nat Philips' perfect header, and the sold out corner of Derby County supporters' perfect celebrations proved we had every right to be excited.Lifting strangers up off the ground after celebrating, hugging the person next to me who doesn't even know my name as the full-time whistle blew, screaming out chants in harmony with 2,286 others who all shared the same emotion, passion, desire, and prayers as each other for 94 minutes. How special is football?
Saturday's result makes survival chances much higher for the Rams…However, this is the Championship, and if there's any league that's guaranteed final day drama, it's this one.Derby will have to make sure they keep their composure, execute the basics, and most importantly not let the occasion get the better of them, knowing full well that Stoke City also come to Pride Park with plenty of incentive to win the game themselves. It's been far from easy for Derby this season, with our fate still needing to be decided on the final day reinforcing that. But this club has kept fighting, even when we looked down and out, seven points from safety and rock bottom of the table just eight weeks ago. What a turnaround it's been.I've been like a kid at Christmas waiting for this game to roll around, a rocking Pride Park, high-pressure moments, these are things you live for as a fan.As Jamie Thrasivoulou says in his 'We are Derby' poem: "We're resilience in the flesh, we've never settled for second best."Tomorrow if we refrain from being second best, Championship football is ours again next season.Seems simple doesn't it!Fighters not victims, together as one, let's get the job done. You can often catch Amelia Warren, external as a guest on BBC Radio Derby.

Dunfermline Athletic celebrate international double as John Tod handed Scotland call-up

Dunfermline are celebrating a double after John Tod was handed his first-ever international call-up. The highly-rated 18-year-old has been rewarded for a stunning start to the season with inclusion in the Scotland U/19s squad for the Slovenia Nations Cup next month. The young Scots will face hosts Slovenia, Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates over a seven-day spell from September 3. The matches are preparation for the qualifiers for next summer's European Championships, with Scotland in a group with England, Lithuania and Latvia. Tod only made his full Pars debut in the Premier Sports Cup clash with Hearts at Tynecastle last month. And his impressive performances have made him an ever-present in Neil Lennon's starting XI so far this term. His maiden senior goal, in the 2-0 victory over Airdrie in the Fifers' last game, was a stunner. It led Lennon to say: 'He's been a real bonus for us, a real find. Left-sided centre-halves are hard to find in the game and I think I've got a good one here.' However, his run in the Dunfermline line-up will be brought to an end by his international duty. The tournament coincides with the Pars hosting Ayr United on September 6 and Tod will now miss that Championship encounter. Meanwhile, fellow Dunfermline teenager Lucas Fyfe has also been called up by Scotland. The 16-year-old has been involved at first-team level under Lennon so far this season and started the Premier Sports Cup win over Dumbarton before a substitute's appearance against Airdrie. The promising attacker has been included in the Scotland U/17s squad for a training camp this week.

Barry Robson lays out Raith Rovers' transfer window plans as he makes 'wriggle room' vow

Raith Rovers remain on the hunt for new recruits – but Barry Robson insists there will be no late signing spree. Continuity has been the order of the day at Stark's Park this summer, with the Kirkcaldy club avoiding the major overhauls of some Championship rivals. The starting XI that defeated Ayr United 1-0 on their last outing included just one fresh face, in Paul McMullan. Josh Rae was another close-season addition on a permanent deal but he spent the latter half of last term on loan from St Johnstone. Richard Chin and Jai Rowe, as well as youngsters Aidan Glavin and Logan Raeside were on the bench at Somerset Park. Since then, Raith have finalised a co-operation agreement with Rangers that allows named loan players – who are aged 16 to 21 and eligible for Scotland – to move back and forth outside the transfer windows. However, no Ibrox youngsters have yet made the switch to Fife and Robson has stressed the ability to still bring in loan players from other clubs. So far, neither has happened as the clock ticks down to the end of the transfer window on September 1. 'We're just where we are,' Robson told Courier Sport when asked about possible arrivals. 'We're still looking and seeing, and hopefully some good players will come up in the next few weeks. 'It's been a bit quiet but hopefully we'll get some stuff done. 'We need to be big into the loan market, like every other club. I think that's going to be the most important thing because other players are not available or they're all signed up. 'So, it's mostly going to be the loan market we'll be looking at. 'But if there is anything else out there we could do, which I'm not sure we can, we'll do it. 'There's a bit of wriggle room but let's try and see what we can get in the next couple of weeks.' Raith go into Friday's televised Fife derby unbeaten in the league since March 1 and with eight of the 11 who started the last clash with Dunfermline still at the club. 'Listen, there's not going to be loads of changes here,' added Robson. 'There's not going to be three or four players coming in here, there's not going to be anything like that. 'If we can get one or two that would be outstanding. 'I'm happy with the group I've got but if we could take one or two to help them that would be good.'

PGA Tour ends decade-long absence from Trump-owned courses with Doral return in 2026

The PGA Tour will return to Donald Trump's Blue Monster course in Miami next spring, ending a decade-long absence from Trump-owned venues. The Miami Championship, a $20m Signature Event scheduled for the first weekend in May 2026, will mark the 56th time the Tour has played at Trump National Doral but the first since 2016, the year Trump won his first US presidential election. That year, the WGC-Cadillac Championship was pulled from the resort and relocated to Mexico City after Cadillac ended its sponsorship. At the time, then-commissioner Tim Finchem stressed that the decision was 'fundamentally a sponsorship issue' and not political, despite Trump's incendiary remarks on immigration and his insistence the Tour was punishing him for his first US presidential run. 'We value dollars for our players,' Finchem said in 2016. 'We were not able to secure sponsorship for Doral. From a golf standpoint, we have no issues with Donald Trump. From a political standpoint, we are neutral.' Trump, who had spent $250m redeveloping the Doral property, publicly lashed out at the Tour and quipped that he hoped officials had 'kidnapping insurance' for the event's new Mexican host city. For the next decade, the Blue Monster fell off the PGA calendar and instead became a regular site for the upstart LIV Golf series, serving as a centerpiece in the Saudi-backed league's schedule. Now the course returns at a moment of transition for the PGA Tour. The Miami Championship expands the roster of Signature Events to nine and sits at the heart of a crowded spring. Beginning with the Masters in April, players will face four Signature Events and two majors in a seven-week stretch, with only the Zurich Classic in New Orleans breaking the run. Next season's PGA TOUR schedule is here!2026, we're ready for you 💪 'We're excited to showcase the game's greatest players competing at golf's most iconic venues,' said Brian Rolapp, the Tour's new chief executive. 'Inspired by our players and fans, we're accelerating the Tour's evolution and ushering in a new era of innovation on and off the course.' The Miami Championship is expected to secure a title sponsor before its debut. Its addition shifts the Mexico Open into the FedExCup Fall and removes the Barracuda Championship in California, which had been played opposite the British Open. Doral has been synonymous with PGA Tour golf since 1962, when it launched as the Doral Open. It became a World Golf Championship site in 2007 but struggled to sustain sponsorship after Trump's 2012 purchase of the property. The 2016 split was, in Finchem's words, pragmatic rather than political, though it coincided with Trump's polarizing rise.
