Tributes paid to Waterford crystal worker and union official who died after assault
Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of an incident at a residential property in St Catherine's Grange shortly after 2pm on Friday afternoon.
A male in his 70s was discovered at the scene with injuries and in an unresponsive condition.
He has been named locally as Pat Fitzgerald (74) who was a native of the city.
Mr Fitzgerald who was a widower was transported to University Hospital Waterford for treatment and was pronounced deceased on Sunday, 3 August 2025.
He was well-known in Waterford city and worked in Waterford Glass as a glass blower for a number of years. He was also heavily involved with the Unite Trade Union at Waterford glass and was involved in several negotiations on behalf of workers.
Local councillor Donal Barry who was a former colleague of Pat Fitzgerald at Waterford Glass said he ''was a highly respected man and a great trade unionist'' and offered his condolences to the family''.

One local said: 'Heartbroken to hear this sad news poor Pat a lovely man condolences to all he's family friends and grandchildren rest in peace Pat.'
Mr Fitzgerald was also a former branch chairman of Unite, when Waterford Crystal workers occupied the plant.
The sit-in began on 30 January, 2009, after the company's receiver shut down manufacturing after running out of cash. The sit-in lasted close to two months and ended after workers agreed to split a payment of €10 million.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene during the incident and subsequently detained at a Garda station within the Waterford-Kilkenny Division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
He was later charged in relation to the investigation and appeared before Waterford District Court on Sunday, 3rd August 2025.
The local Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem examination will be carried out. A technical and forensic examination at the scene has been completed.
A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) is leading the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) is providing support to the deceased's family. An incident room has been established at Waterford Garda Station .Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

Indian family in Waterford say kids attacked their six-year-old and racially abused her
AN INDIAN NURSE has spoken out about an alleged attack on her 6-year-old daughter in a housing estate in Co Waterford on Monday night. Anupa Achuthan, the girl's mother, told The Journal that the attack happened on Monday evening after 7 pm, in front of the family's home. She says that a group of boys who appeared to be aged 11-13 physcially attacked her daughter Nia, by hitting her with a bicycle in her 'genital area' and punching her in the face. Anupa said that her daughter and friends of her daughter, who witnessed the alleged attack, said that the teenagers told Nia to 'go back to India' and used abusive language. Her daughter said that five teenagers were involved in the attack, later Anupa saw two boys and one girl in that age range hanging around outside her house, while she was trying to console her daughter. Anupa brought her daughter University Hospital Waterford as she had 'swelling on her face and pain in her genital area'. The mother of two was at home with both of her children, and keeping an eye on her daughter Nia while she was playing in their housing estate, when she went back into the house briefly in order to feed her ten-month-old. 'My husband was on night duty for work, and I was alone with the kids. I nipped inside briefly, as in the estate we are all generally keeping an eye on the kids when they are just playing outside, and around two or three minutes later my daughter and her friends knocked at the door and she was scared and crying,' Anupa said. 'After five minutes the boys who hit her with the bike came back with the bike, and Nia cried again, she was very upset. We went inside the house and the boys continued to stare in at me very rudely, even I felt afraid,' Anupa said. Anupa said that she reported this incident to the gardaí, and that it has made her and her family feel less safe where they live in the Kilbarry area of Co Waterford. A garda spokesperson said that gardaí are investigating after they responded to a report of an elleged assault in the Kilbarry area of Waterford city on Monday 4 August. The Indian embassy in Ireland has warned its citizens to take safety precautions for their personal safety after what it says has been a rise in physcial attacks on members of the Indian community. The embassy said that people should avoid 'deserted areas, especially in odd hours'. An attack on a man in Tallaght on 19 July by a group of teenage boys, who was beaten and had his clothing taken off him down to his waist, sparked outcry from members of the Indian community and locals. Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore recently shared an open letter from an Indian nurse who said that they plan to leave Ireland. In the letter the nurse said that they have come to fear racial attacks against themselves and their children in light of a series of attacks. Gardai make arrest after man rushed to hospital following late-night assault
A man is being treated in hospital after he was assaulted in Co Galway last night. Gardaí have launched an investigation following the alleged assault, which occurred in the Ballybane area of Galway city at approximately 7.50pm on Tuesday evening (August 5). Emergency services were called to the scene and the victim, a man aged in his 50s, was rushed to University Hospital Galway, where his condition is described as non-life-threatening, Galway Beo reports. A second man, also aged in his 50s, was subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged assault and remains in custody in a garda station in Galway. A garda spokesperson said investigations into the incident are ongoing. "Gardaí responded to an incident of assault that occurred at approximately 7:50pm last night, 5th of August 2025 in the Ballybane area of Galway City," the garda spokesperson said in a statement. "A man aged in his 50s was conveyed to University Hospital Galway for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries." "Another man aged in his 50s was arrested in connection with this incident and remains in detention in a Garda Station in Galway County. Investigations are ongoing." The incident comes just days after a man was subjected to a brutal assault in the toilets of a fast food restaurant in Galway city. The incident occurred in the bathroom of Supermac's in Eyre Square shortly before 10pm on Saturday evening (August 2). According to gardai, a man aged in his 50s was assaulted by three males in the toilet area of the busy fast food restaurant. The victim suffered several injuries in the alleged assault and was treated by emergency services at the scene. Man further remanded in custody following alleged assault on pensioner in Waterford
A 35-year-old man has been further remanded in custody charged with assaulting a pensioner who died in hospital three days after an alleged incident in Waterford city. David Norris of Assumption Terrace, Rosbercon, New Ross, Co Wexford made his second appearance at a special sitting of Waterford District Court on Tuesday in relation to the alleged assault on former ATGWU trade union official Pat Fitzgerald, who was in his 70s. Mr Norris first appeared at Waterford District Court on Sunday when he was charged with assault causing harm to Mr Fitzgerald at Saint Catherines Grange, Waterford on August 1st, contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997. Mr Norris was remanded in custody by Judge Miriam Walsh to appear again at Waterford District Court on Tuesday. READ MORE Judge Walsh further remanded him in custody to appear again at Waterford District Court on August 19th. Mr Fitzgerald, who died at University Hospital Waterford on Sunday, was described by Independent member of Waterford City and County Council, Cllr Donal Barry as a highly respected trade union official at Waterford Crystal. 'Pat started his career in Waterford Crystal as a blower. He was then a full-time union official in the plant. There was 3,500 of us (employees) there at one stage and Pat was highly respected among all the workforce and even by and management. 'He did an awful lot of good work with the union then. He was a fantastic union official and was well known throughout the country in the former ATGWU.' Mr Fitzgerald, who was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen, is survived by his sons, Wayne and Karl, his daughter, Joanne, his mother Maura, brothers Nicky and John and sisters, Joan, Margie, Brenda, Helen, Ann and June as well as his grandchildren, Mia, Ruben, Sofia and Adam. Mr Fitzgerald, who was from Slievekeale on the western side of the city, will be buried on Friday after mass at 12pm at Sacred Heart Church, The Folly, Waterford.
