Phoenix Suns Make Embarrassing Decision After Brutal 2024-25 Campaign

Yahoo22-04-2025

The Phoenix Suns' season is over, and the most expensive roster in the NBA won only 36 games, missing the Western Conference Play-In tournament. The Suns traded all of their first-round picks for a core of Bradley Beal and Kevin Durant alongside home-grown star Devin Booker, but they seem poised for a very long rebuild.
As the Suns head to Cancun, back home, or wherever they plan on spending their summer, the organization had one last bumble, the icing on the cake of their failed season.

Regardless of the outcome, the end of the season usually offers players and coaches one last chance to address the media.

Players outline highs and lows and offer expectations for next season during these exit interviews. For the most part, questions are friendly despite the season ending without a championship for 29 teams.
However, the Suns opted not to hold these interviews this season.
As Phoenix starts to navigate a difficult offseason, giving the media a chance to get hints at their plans would have allowed less baseless speculation and more concrete reporting, although, in order to avoid any potential embarrassment, the Suns opted not to go through one last press briefing.
To their (and our) credit, the media has done an excellent job at appropriately holding the Suns' organization accountable for their lackluster season and will continue to do so throughout the rebuild.

Bill Simmons thinks a Kevin Durant blockbuster trade could be ‘done already'

Could Kevin Durant's next basketball home already be a done deal? Bill Simmons thinks so. 'I wouldn't be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already and they just haven't announced it,' Simmons said on Monday's episode of his self-titled podcast. 'Like they've agreed on the specifics and they'll just announce it the week of the draft.' 4 Bill Simmons believes that a Kevin Durant trade could already be a done deal. The Bill Simmons Podcast While Simmons said he doesn't have any real 'inside info,' Durant and the Suns have been working together to find a landing spot for next season — and the Spurs have been one of the teams atop the list of those interested. San Antonio has also been rumored to be pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo, though the soon-to-be 37-year-old Durant entering the final year of his contract would certainly be a less steep price for the Spurs to pay in a trade. 4 Kevin Durant is more than likely heading out of Phoenix this offseason. Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images 'It goes back to the Giannis thing, I think they're just gonna trade for KD,' Simmons added. 'It'll cost a lot less, they'll be able to be really competitive, go a couple rounds in the playoffs but they're also gonna keep the No. 2 pick and do it that way.' The Spurs' top assets in a trade (aside from the untouchable Victor Wembanyama) would widely be considered to be this 2024-25 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and the No. 2 overall draft pick — which is likely to be Rutgers guard Dylan Harper. 4 Victor Wembanyama missed most of last season with a blood clot. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post San Antonio also owns the No. 14 pick and plenty of other young pieces. While trading for Antetokounmpo would mean certainly parting ways with most of the assets the Spurs own aside from Wembanyama, acquiring Durant could look like a package of Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson and the 14th pick. Durant is entering the final year of his contract and will make about $55 million this season. With his age and no guarantee of him re-signing, a Vassell/Johnson/No. 14 deal could very well do the trick. The Washington D.C. native played his college basketball at Texas — so a move to San Antonio would be a bit of a reunion. 4 Keldon Johnson, Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell could all be potential targets for teams trading with the Spurs. NBAE via Getty Images If the Spurs are truly set to land Durant, they'd be pairing him with an already strong core of Wembanyama, Castle, De'Aaron Fox and (likely) Harper. The Rockets and Timberwolves are the other main teams to keep an eye out for in the Durant sweepstakes.

Kevin Durant Trade Rumors Given Shocking Prediction

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The NBA offseason is just a few weeks away from fully commencing, and this summer is expected to be a wild one. There have already been multiple star players named in potential trade rumors, with many teams likely to be very active. More NBA news: Top 5 Landing Spots For Kevin Durant Amid Trade Rumors One name that has been circling around trade rumors is Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. After another disappointing year in Phoenix, many around the NBA expect Durant to be traded this offseason. The Suns almost moved Durant at the trade deadline this past year, giving more thought to a potential deal going down. While there have been multiple teams heavily linked to Durant already, longtime NBA analyst Bill Simmons believes he has the answers. Simmons has predicted that the Suns and San Antonio Spurs have agreed upon a deal for Durant already. But due to the NBA Finals going on, the two sides are waiting to announce the terms of the deal. "I wouldn't be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already and they just haven't announced it. Basically, they've agreed on specifics, just announce it on the week of the draft. This goes back to the Giannis thing. I think they trade for KD because it just costs less. They'll be able to be real competitive and maybe go a couple of rounds in the playoffs, but they're also going to keep the No. 2 pick and do it that way, which is my prediction.", Simmons said. Kevin Durant #35 of the Phoenix Suns reacts against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first quarter at Target Center on March 28, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Durant and the Suns have been on a losing streak. More Photo byIf Durant does land in San Antonio, it would give the Spurs a legitimate three-headed monster. With star center Victor Wembanyama and guard De'Aaron Fox in the mix, San Antonio could be a lethal team in the Western Conference next season. More NBA news: Kevin Durant Future Reportedly Tied to Giannis Antetokounmpo Even at his advanced age, Durant is still one of the better scorers in the NBA. Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game this past season. Adding him to the team would instantly vault the Spurs into title contenders in an already loaded West. But Durant likely wants to play for a contender, and the opportunity to team up with Wembanyama may be too much to pass on. It remains to be seen how the Durant trade speculation goes, but his time with the Suns seems to be coming to an end. Durant will likely be on a new team next year as he tries to get another title under his belt before he retires.
