No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev loses to Arthur Rinderknech in first round at Wimbledon

Third-seeded Alexander Zverev lost to 72nd-ranked Arthur Rinderknech 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4 in the first round at Wimbledon on Tuesday in a match that was suspended overnight. It was Zverev's earliest exit at a Grand Slam tournament since 2019 — also at the All England Club. Rinderknech, a 29-year-old Frenchman, had only one other career victory at Wimbledon — that was last year. In the buildup to the tournament, Rinderknech reached the quarterfinals at Queen's Club, where he beat Ben Shelton and Reilly Opelka. Zverev has reached the fourth round at Wimbledon three times, including last year, but never beyond that point. He lost to Taylor Fritz in five sets a year ago.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova bids farewell to ‘the best tournament'

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova waved goodbye to her favorite Grand Slam tournament Tuesday. The 35-year-old Czech player, who won at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, plans to leave the tour after the U.S. Open, which ends in September. Her Wimbledon farewell was a 6-3, 6-1 loss to 10th-seeded Emma Navarro of the United States on No. 1 Court. 'This place holds the best memories I could wish for,' an emotional Kvitova said in an on-court interview that is usually granted to the match winner. 'I never dreamed of winning a Wimbledon and I won it twice. This is something very special. 'I will miss Wimbledon for sure,' she continued. 'I will miss tennis, I will miss you fans. But I'm ready for the next chapter in life as well, and I can't wait to be back as a member.' Kvitova, who accepted a wild-card invitation, missed last year's tournament while on maternity leave. The 24-year-old Navarro said Kvitova has been 'an incredible player and obviously won this tournament twice, and then had a kid and came back, which is definitely an inspiring story from her end.' In 2011, Kvitova beat Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in the final. Three years later, Kvitova earned her second trophy, defeating Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 in the title match. 'I think it's the best tournament in the world,' she said. The U.S. Open, she assures, will be her last one. 'I am sure,' Kvitova said, noting it's not just the toll on her body. 'The motivation, it's different than it was before.'

Second seed Coco Gauff knocked out of Wimbledon

American second seed Coco Gauff suffered a stunning Wimbledon defeat as the French Open champion was beaten 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 by Ukranian world number 42 Dayana Yastremska on Tuesday. Gauff was expected to make a strong run at the All England Club after her triumph at Roland Garros in June. Advertisement But instead of building on her success on the Paris clay, the 21-year-old endured her earliest Grand Slam exit since another first-round loss at Wimbledon in 2023. Yastremska powered to victory in 78 minutes on Court One, with Gauff joining third seed Jessica Pegula and fifth seed Zheng Qinwen as high-profile departures from the tournament on Tuesday. Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion, has failed to get past the fourth round in each of her six visits to Wimbledon. She paid the price for an unusually error-strewn display featuring nine double-faults, 29 unforced errors and just six winners. Yastremska has previously claimed she has an allergy to grass, but the 25-year-old's shock success against Gauff extended an impressive recent run on the surface. Advertisement Known as one of the more glamourous players on the women's tour for her high-profile Instagram modelling, Yastremska made the Nottingham final and the Eastbourne quarter-finals in June. "It was a great match today. I was really on fire, even my nails have fire on them," Yastremska said. "Playing Coco is special. These courts are made for the greatest players so I'm very grateful to play here. "It's really unexpected. I love playing on grass. I feel this year we are kind of friends. I hope the road can continue for me." smg/jw
