Organization planning Women's Day protest
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Indivisible 605 was created in 2017, but Cyndi Olson took over the organization just last month. Now, she's organizing her first protest.
'For most of us involved in this, we do not have a background or history in activism or protesting. So, this is new. We are learning as we're going. We're trying to do our best. We really want to be perfectly clear. We don't want to give out bad messages. We want people to see this as a trusted source,' said Cyndi Olson of Indivisible 605.
The event will take place on Saturday, March 8th, which is International Women's Day. But the current political climate is also a key focus, notably a bill that could impact some people's ability to vote.

'There's a bill that says you can't vote if your name is different than what your birth certificate is, that's threatening our ability to vote. So, we need to be loud. We need to make sure they know that we're not going back,' said Roni Wegner of Indivisible 605.
Because Olson and Wegner were uncertain where to start, they called in someone more experienced in planning protests.
'So I was reached out to by Indivisible 605, and they asked me to help them plan a bigger protest. And we came together, had a couple of meetings and we talked about what that could look like. I looked at a calendar and found out that the International Women's Day was this Saturday, so, it's coming together really fast but fortunately, there's a few of us who are really well-versed in protesting, especially here in Sioux Falls,' said Allison Renville, the executive director of TiWakan, a nonprofit organization.
Though it's the first time for some organizers, they know it won't be the last- they plan to continue their movement.
'It's not necessarily going to be completely happy, but we are going to be peaceful. We may be a little louder than we were last time. We don't want to disturb people, but we want to be heard,' said Olson.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO/AP) — Former South Dakota governor and current Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was critical Sunday on CBS News' 'Face the Nation' of California Gov. Gavin Newsom as she defended President Donald Trump's deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles. 'The president knows that he makes bad decisions, and that's why the president chose the safety of this community over waiting for Governor Newsom to get some sanity,' Noem said Sunday. 'And that's one of the reasons why these National Guard soldiers are being federalized, so they can use their special skillset to keep peace.' 'I was alarmed recently to hear Democrats encouraging Biden to federalize the National Guard under title 10 in order to take them away from the control of governors and take away my ability to be their commander in chief of the National Guard,' Noem said Feb. 23, 2024 when she was still governor of South Dakota. Trump Sunday that protesters are now banned from wearing masks. This, along with the widespread use of face coverings on the other side, also came up during Noem's interview Sunday with CBS' Margaret Brennan. 'People have questioned why they have their faces covered,' Noem said. 'It's for the safety of those individuals or the work that they're doing as far as protecting their identity so they can continue to do investigative work, so.' 'But are you tasking the National Guard soldiers with removing masks from protesters?' Brennan said in response. 'I mean, are you trying to use them in that way?' 'National Guard soldiers are there to provide security for operations and to make sure that we have peaceful protests,' Noem said in response. 'So, that's what their work is, and I won't get more specific on that.' On the possibility of arresting Newsom, Trump said 'I would do it if I were Tom. I think it's great.' Gov. Rhoden tours Israel with South Dakota Trade
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Gov. Larry Rhoden is in Israel. The Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar posted a photo on X with Rhoden and said, 'Great to host @GovLarryRhoden in Jerusalem and thank him for South Dakota's support for Israel. We spoke about Iran's nuclear ambitions and regional aggression, which are dangerous for Israel, regional stability and world order,'. Rescue at Hippie Hole in the Black Hills In a news release, Rhoden's office said he is leading 'a business-driven trade mission to Israel alongside South Dakota Trade'. 'This mission is 100% business-driven,' said Jesse Fonkert, President & CEO of South Dakota Trade, in a news release. 'We had a successful mission in November of last year and are back because our businesses are generating real opportunities that have already produced millions in sales and a robust pipeline for even more expansion.' Rhoden also visited the Gandel Rehabilitation Center at Hadassah's Mt. Scopus Hospital to meet with recovering soldiers who have been injured since the start of the war. This stop was coordinated by South Dakota Jewish community leader Carol Rosenthal, who serves as the Chair of Hadassah International. Davison County Sheriff opposing possible prison near Mitchell
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The sheriff for Davison County is officially opposing the idea of building a new men's prison near Mitchell. Last week, Gov. Larry Rhoden's Project Prison Rest task force included Mitchell among Worthing and other existing DOC sites as a possible site for a new men's prison facility to replace the current South Dakota State Penitentiary located in Sioux Falls. 35-year-old arrested in early morning crime spree including stolen bus In a post on social media, Davison County Sheriff Steve Harr said he 'will not be supporting bringing the state prison to Davison County.' 'I contacted Minnehaha County Sheriff Milstead, who sits on the task force, informing him of this. I have asked him to forward it on to the entire task force,' Harr wrote. Harr said prior to last week's task force meeting, he had signed a letter of support for the prison near Mitchell. 'This was done with hopes Davison County would make the final cut and some conversations would start,' Harr wrote. 'It was not done as a statement of 'we need a prison in Mitchell.' Well, as you know, this was successful, as the conversation all over town is on this topic.' Harr said he believes it has become clear there's a large number of residents opposed to a new men's prison being built near Mitchell. 'My job as Sheriff is to look out for the citizens of Davison County and I feel that is what is being done by coming to this decision,' Harr said. 'I would like to thank everyone that has reached out or made your concerns known in other ways.'
