Thousands gather in Sioux Falls to protest Trump's actions

Attendees carry signs during a protest against President Donald Trump on April 5, 2025, in Sioux Falls. (Joshua Haiar/South Dakota Searchlight) SIOUX FALLS — A crowd estimated in the thousands protested Saturday in downtown Sioux Falls as part of a nationwide movement to resist President Donald Trump's agenda, with attendees focusing on the protection of things such as abortion rights, Social Security and free trade. 'My angst is really about the millions of people who are hurting and will hurt because of his policies,' said Roni Wegner, with Indivisible 605, which helped organize the protest. 'I don't see how it's going to help. There is no long-term plan.' For more about the impact of federal firings, funding freezes, spending cuts and grant cancellations, see Searchlight's DOGE in SD page. Another attendee, Reed Boysen, said, 'This is not a left or right moment, this is a right or wrong moment.' There were also protests in Pierre and Rapid City. The South Dakota chapter of the national 50501 Movement (50 protests, 50 states, one movement) was an organizer, saying that the protests were staged to 'resist executive overreach, defend democracy, and oppose the harmful policies of Project 2025.' Conservative political groups wrote and published the Project 2025 plan as a roadmap to remake the federal government during Trump's presidency. The 50501 movement called on South Dakotans to 'remove corrupt politicians from office,' 'reverse the damage inflicted' and 'reclaim our rights, our government and our future.' Since Trump took office, he has moved rapidly with billionaire Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency to fire hundreds of thousands of federal workers, cut or freeze billions in federal government spending, eliminate the federal Department of Education and take other actions that drew protesters into the streets Saturday. Group protesting outside Sioux Falls VA Hospital

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A group of protestors gathered near the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sioux Falls Friday afternoon. Docs: Iowan says he tried saving student in Dominican The group gathered at Spellerberg Park and lined the intersection of 26th Street and Western Avenue. The group said it is protesting to 'honor and support America's Veterans.' Signs at the protest call for more support for Veterans. The group that organized the protest is called 'Indivisible 605.' The group says 'it is dedicated to promoting South Dakota values from a platform of inclusion and equality. We utilize non-violent and polite pressure to defend liberty against the current administration's authoritarian, nationalist tendencies.' According to News Nation, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Feb. 11 directing all agencies to 'promptly undertake preparations to initiate large-scale reductions in force,' using a legal term commonly referred to as RIF to denote mass layoffs. Significant reductions are expected at the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Pentagon, raising concerns about the impact on vital services. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Organization planning Women's Day protest

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Indivisible 605 was created in 2017, but Cyndi Olson took over the organization just last month. Now, she's organizing her first protest. 'For most of us involved in this, we do not have a background or history in activism or protesting. So, this is new. We are learning as we're going. We're trying to do our best. We really want to be perfectly clear. We don't want to give out bad messages. We want people to see this as a trusted source,' said Cyndi Olson of Indivisible 605. The event will take place on Saturday, March 8th, which is International Women's Day. But the current political climate is also a key focus, notably a bill that could impact some people's ability to vote. Offensive struggles plague USD in loss to Oral Roberts 'There's a bill that says you can't vote if your name is different than what your birth certificate is, that's threatening our ability to vote. So, we need to be loud. We need to make sure they know that we're not going back,' said Roni Wegner of Indivisible 605. Because Olson and Wegner were uncertain where to start, they called in someone more experienced in planning protests. 'So I was reached out to by Indivisible 605, and they asked me to help them plan a bigger protest. And we came together, had a couple of meetings and we talked about what that could look like. I looked at a calendar and found out that the International Women's Day was this Saturday, so, it's coming together really fast but fortunately, there's a few of us who are really well-versed in protesting, especially here in Sioux Falls,' said Allison Renville, the executive director of TiWakan, a nonprofit organization. Though it's the first time for some organizers, they know it won't be the last- they plan to continue their movement. 'It's not necessarily going to be completely happy, but we are going to be peaceful. We may be a little louder than we were last time. We don't want to disturb people, but we want to be heard,' said Olson. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
