Bengaluru Sustainability Conclave: OP Jindal report urges all universities to lead climate action
BENGALURU: Amid growing concerns over rising global temperatures, social inequalities, and economic instability, there is an urgent need for collective action on sustainability, according to OP Jindal Global University's Sustainable Development Report 2025.
The report was released by Governor Thawaarchand Gehlot at the Bengaluru Sustainability Conclave here on Tuesday. It called upon universities to take a leading role in addressing climate challenges and outlines the university's progress in sustainability research, education and operations, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The report author, Prof Padmanabha Ramanujam, highlighted the role of higher education in sustainability leadership.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday (June 5, 2025) expressed concern over the inadequate representation of developing countries in multilateral institutions. Noting that this imbalance hampers global equity, he urged the BRICS nations to correct it. Addressing the second Working Session of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Brasilia, Mr. Birla said global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic had disproportionately affected the Global South and sought coordinated action to address such challenges. 'We are concerned that representation of developing countries in international institutions remains inadequate. This imbalance hampers global equity and balanced development. Therefore, BRICS countries must collectively make concrete efforts to enhance the participation of the Global South in such institutions,' Mr. Birla said. His speech was shared by the Lok Sabha Secretariat. He said challenges related to health, food and energy security have intensified, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be difficult without concrete and coordinated action. 'Despite global challenges, BRICS nations have made inspiring progress in the realm of economic development. India believes that to further strengthen this progress, we must enhance intra-BRICS trade, investment and financial cooperation,' the Lok Sabha Speaker said. Mr. Birla welcomed the recent expansion of the BRICS grouping and said this will make the collaboration more inclusive and impactful.

Karnataka Governor calls for mutli-stakeholder cooperation to achieve SDGs
'To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), multi-stakeholder cooperation is essential. These goals remain a primary focus, and we in the government have been working assiduously to achieve them at the grassroots level through programmes like Make in India, Swachh Bharat, and others in water, health, farmer support, and State initiatives. Bengaluru, known as India's Silicon Valley and a centre of science and research, is facing many challenges and stress on its resources,' said Thawaarchand Gehlot, Governor of Karnataka, speaking at the Bengaluru Sustainability Conclave organised by O.P. Jindal Global University and RV University. He added, 'It is important that knowledge sharing, cooperation, and information exchange help mitigate the challenges of climate change. The growing carbon footprint, pollution, deforestation, and other factors have led to a climate crisis, and it is imperative that we address these issues urgently. We need to inform and sensitise people about them. Our campaigns to save energy, water, and other resources are aimed at protecting the environment.' O.P.
