
Axiom-4 commercial mission launches for ISS after delays
June 24 (UPI) -- Following numerous delays and scrubbed liftoffs, NASA, SpaceX and Axiom Space successfully launched their Axiom-4 mission early Wednesday, sending four astronauts in what is the fourth private commercial mission to the International Space Station.
The Falcon 9 rocket launched at 2:31 a.m. EDT on Wednesday from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. As the countdown hit zero and the spacecraft began its ascent from Earth, cheers erupted from mission control during the live broadcast.
"Liftoff of Ax-4!" SpaceX celebrated on X, posting a 30-second clip of the liftoff.
Following confirmation of nominal orbit insertion, which occurred about 10 minutes after launch, the commander of the mission, American Peggy Whitson, said they were heading for the ISS.
"We had an incredible ride uphill and now we'd like to set our course for the International Space Station, aboard the newest member of the Dragon suite, our spacecraft named Grace," Whitson said.
"Grace is more than a name, it reflects the elegance with which we move through space against the backdrop of Earth ... Grace reminds us that spaceflight is not just a feat of engineering but an act of goodwill, for the benefit of every human, everywhere."
The first-stage booster, on its second flight, also returned to Earth and successfully landed on Landing Zone 1 at Cape Canaveral, about eight minutes into the flight.
Grace and its four-member crew -- Whitson, pilot Shubhanshu Shukla from India and mission specialists Slawosz Uzanański-Wiśniewksi from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary -- are expected to dock with the ISS at 7 a.m. EDT Thursday morning.
"With a culturally diverse crew, we are not only advancing scientific knowledge but also fostering international collaboration," said Whitson in a quote from the Axiom Space website.

The Axiom-4 mission was repeatedly delayed. A first launch attempt earlier this month was scrubbed due to high winds, and a second one was called off after SpaceX detected a liquid oxygen leak in its Falcon 9 rocket.
The launch was scrubbed again Sunday to ensure the ISS was ready to receive the new crew members, according to NASA. The station's orbital laboratory's Zvezda service module had recently been repaired, and NASA was reviewing data to ensure all systems were ready to handle additional people.
Axiom Space, which is based in Houston, is building the first commercial space station, scheduled to deploy sometime before 2030.
The Axiom-4 mission is scheduled to last 14 days. The crew will conduct 60 scientific experiments and demonstrations "focused on human research, Earth observation and life, biological and material sciences," according to SpaceX.

Antarctic mystery deepens with radio waves detected below the ice
Mountains, sub-glacial lakes, hidden valleys, even remnants of lost civilizations: what lies under Antarctica's vast 2,000-metre thick ice sheet has long been a mystery akin to the depths of the ocean or the dark side of the moon. As big as the US and India combined, much of the frozen continent is off-limits to the handful of hardy visitors permitted each year, adding to the mystery. The sense of enigma has been heightened by the revelation that "strange radio pulses" detected in the ice defy explanation after almost a decade of trying to figure them out. First picked up in 2016 by instrument-laden balloons flown by NASA's Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) team, the inexplicable "anomalies" appear to be a "form of radio waves," according to researchers from Penn State University (PSU). But what makes the pulses anomalous is that they "appeared to be coming from below the horizon" - an orientation that "cannot be explained by the current understanding of particle physics," the researchers confirmed. "The radio waves that we detected nearly a decade ago were at really steep angles, like 30 degrees below the surface of the ice," said PSU's Stephanie Wissel, who was part of the NASA ANITA team. In other words, the pulses should have been absorbed by rock - thousands of kilometres of it going by the angle of the pulses - long before the balloons could detect them. "It's an interesting problem because we still don't actually have an explanation for what those anomalies are," Wissel said. Funded by the US Department of Energy and the US National Science Foundation, the PSU researchers were part of a team made up of dozens of scientists that worked at the world's biggest cosmic ray detector - the Pierre Auger Observatory on the western Argentine plain - to try solve the riddle. The team's attempt to decode the mystery featured in the journal Physical Review Letters in late March and was publicised in a statement released by PSU in mid-June. In mid-March, a multinational team of scientists including representatives of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) published what they described as "the most detailed map yet" of sub-glacial Antarctica. Showing the shape of the continent were it ice-free, the map showed a tapestry of islands, mountains and valleys and revealed the ice's thickest point to be an approximately 4,700-metre section filling an unnamed canyon.

Lunchtime liftoff: SpaceX set for 2nd rocket launch Wednesday
SpaceX is keeping extra busy Wednesday as crews prepare to launch a second Falcon 9 rocket from Florida's Space Coast. This mission will send 27 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. It joins Crew Dragon Endeavour, which first flew in 2020 and was followed by Resilience, Endurance and Freedom. 'It speaks to the refinement of our mission, the harmony of science and spirit and the unmerited favor we carry with humility,' Whitson said. Whitson had hinted at the name being related to the crew's zero-gravity indicator, meaning the small item traditionally used to let astronauts know when they've made it to space. For this mission it was a plush swan named Joy. She was leading a crew of three customers from three countries that had not sent anyone to space in more than four decades. Taking the role of pilot was India's Shubhanshu Shukla while Sławosz Uznański of Poland, a European Space Agency project astronaut, and Tibor Kapu of Hungary are mission specialists. Each man is now the second to fly for their country, and the first as astronauts. Their predecessors flew as cosmonauts under a program with the Soviet Union in the 1970s and early 1980s. The mission had a tortuous path to launch. Attempts in just the last two weeks had been called off because of weather, a leak on the rocket and a leak on the space station. There was even a scare with less than an hour before liftoff when SpaceX had to troubleshoot getting data loaded into the new Crew Dragon needed in case of an emergency abort after launch. With one minute to go before SpaceX would have had to call off the launch, though, mission control let the crew know they were good to proceed. The mission was originally targeting a 2024 launch but kept getting pushed for sundry reasons including losing their original ride to space, the flight-proven Crew Dragon Endurance, which ended up serving the needs of the Crew-10 mission that flew up to the space station in March. That change was due to SpaceX's delays in getting the new Crew Dragon ready, but it ultimately became the Ax-4 ride, meaning its crew was given the honor of naming it. 'Good things come to those who wait,' said mission control after the name reveal. 'Godspeed to the maiden crew of Grace.' Since its first human spaceflight in 2020, SpaceX has now flown its fleet of Crew Dragon spacecraft 18 times carrying 68 humans to space. Whitson flew three times for NASA in her career, but is now leading an Axiom mission for the second time. With675 days on orbit in the books, she holds the record for any woman and any American for time in space. She'll now add onto that as Crew Dragon is now targeting arrival to the space station about 7 a.m. Thursday.
