Warning to drivers after road deaths increase
A startling increase in fatal road collisions recorded in Essex has prompted police to issue a warning ahead of the Easter weekend.
So far this year, there have been 22 road deaths in the county, compared with 12 during the same time period in 2024.
Adam Pipe, the head of roads policing for Essex Police, said he had "never seen this level of trauma and death" in his 25 years at the force.
He said there had been an enormous increase in drug driving offences recorded this year - with 375 arrests made up until the end of March.
"Drug driving is an enormous problem for society and policing," he told BBC Essex.
"I don't think people fully appreciate the legislation."
The force was called to two fatal collisions on the A120 near Braintree on Wednesday.
Four students died after their car collided with a building in Colchester on 1 February, and on the same day, a nine-year-old girl and her 16-year-old brother died after a crash in Basildon involving the e-scooter they were on.
"There is no other part of public life where we would tolerate this level of death and injury."
Essex Police wants to achieve zero road deaths over the course of a year by 2040.
The force has signed up to a month-long campaign called Operation Spotlight, coordinated by the National Police Chiefs' Council.

'Palm Beach Police officers responded to the scene and took the individual into custody, charging him with occupied trespassing.' The spokesperson added that no Secret Service protectees were present at the time of the incident. The president was in Washington, D.C., on Monday and Tuesday, according to his public schedule. The White House did not immediately return the Daily Beast's request for comment. Reyes was booked at the Palm Beach County Jail on a $50,000 bond, according to court records. He was ordered not to contact Donald Trump or any of his family members, including Kai Trump. He pleaded not guilty. The president's eldest grandchild, Kai Trump has made a name for herself as a social media influencer who shares her grandfather's love of golf. She made her political debut at the Republican National Convention last summer, telling attendees, 'to me, he's just a normal grandpa.' She has more than a million followers on YouTube, and upwards of 3 million on TikTok, where she vlogs about her life as a competitive golfer and member of the Trump family. In April, she shared a video of a family Easter visit to the White House, including a tour of the Oval Office. He is facing two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, and one count of racketeering. The rapper has pleaded not guilty to all charges and reportedly rejected a plea deal ahead of the trial. If convicted of the sex trafficking charges, he could face a minimum sentence of 15 years. For the transportation to engage in prostitution charges, he faces up to 10 years in prison. As for the racketeering charge, he could face life in prison. However, sources have suggested that the rapper may beat the charge as the actions leading to the racketeering count only reflected that of a "crazed, criminal, jealous boyfriend" acting out, per Fox News Digital.

Arkansas State Police troopers injured in I-430 crash during traffic stop
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas State Police officials said two troopers were injured while conducting a traffic stop. ASP officials said the troopers were conducting the traffic stop on Tuesday around 11 a.m. on Interstate 430 when their patrol car was hit by a passing car. Officials added that the driver of the other car was not injured. 'This incident highlights the critical importance of the Move Over Law. According to state police, the Move Over Law requires drivers to move to the farthest lane away from all emergency vehicles that are stopped or parked on a street, road, highway or shoulder.
