Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu seeks funds for tobacco farmers
Vijayawada: Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has requested Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal to allocate ₹150 crore from the tobacco board to the state govt to manage the ongoing burley tobacco purchases.
He said that the state govt is purchasing about 20 million kg of burley tobacco by spending nearly ₹300 crore as traders did not pick up the stocks leaving the growers into deep trouble. Union minister Goyal visited chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's residence in Undavalli on Sunday and held discussions on various issues. The chief minister explained that the state govt set up tobacco purchase centres at seven locations in Bapatla, Guntur, Palnadu, and Prakasam districts to avoid further delay causing distress among the farming community.
"The state govt deployed state marketing agency-markfed to purchase burley tobacco from growers and it was expected to cost around Rs 300 crore. The state's burden would greatly come down if the Centre grants at least Rs 150 crore from the surplus revenues of the tobacco board," said Naidu.
He had also requested the Union minister to bring burley tobacco production and marketing under the purview of the tobacco board with the amendment of tobacco board Act.

He said that tobacco board is only regulating FCV tobacco while the burley growers are being misled by the private players resulting in crisis when there are no buyers. He observed that bringing the cultivation of white and black burley tobacco too under the tobacco board jurisdiction would be help regulate the crop properly.
Chief minister urged Goyal to reconsider reducing the import duty on oil palm to 10%. He explained that reducing import duty is causing palm oil farmers in the state to receive unfair prices and suffer significant losses.
Chief minister highlighted that the decision to reduce import duty could hinder the goals of the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO) set by the centre. He suggested the union minister to hold discussions with the US regarding the duties imposed on aqua exports.
"The 27% duty imposed by the US on seafood is impacting eight lakh aqua farmers in Andhra Pradesh. The Centre should exert pressure on USA to reduce the burden to relieve aqua farmers," said Naidu. He had also urged Goyal to reduce GST on mango pulp from 12% to 5%. He said that the state govt had already brought the issue to the attention of the Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Maharashtra: Feasibility study on water taxi routes in MMR presented; estimated capital cost Rs 2,500 crore
A techno-economic feasibility study for water taxis in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) was presented to the state government on Monday with a plan of operating 10 routes totalling 252 kilometers with an estimated capital cost of Rs 2,500 crore. During the meeting, a discussion was also held on starting additional water taxi routes on Mumbai's Western seafront. Among the 10 routes proposed in the report include, Narangi – Kharwadeswari near Virar (1 km length), Vasai – Mira Bhayandar– Fountain Junction –Gaimukh– Nagale (16 km), Kalher–Kolshet– Mulund–Aeroli– Vashi– DCT – Gateway (50 km ), Gaimukh-Kolshet– Kalher– Mumbra– Kalyan (31 km), New airport-Belapur-Vashi (14 km), Vasai– Marve– Nariman Point (61 km), Borivali– Gorai– Essel world- Marve- Manori (6 km), Rewas- Karanja- Gateway (19 km), Belapur-Gateway-Mandwa (38 km) and Gateway-Elephanta-Nhava (17 km). The report was drafted by the Kochi Water Metro and presented to state Ports Minister Nitesh Rane. According to an official present at the meeting, the government has decided to increase the number of routes before going ahead with the Detailed Project Report (DPR). 'The study does not include key Mumbai routes such as Worli, Juhu and Varsova. It will be added and the DPR of this project will be prepared,' the officer said. Out of these routes, five are projected to be financially viable after 2029 and two would require Viability Gap Funding (VGF) by the government to turn viable. While Rs 2,500 crore was estimated as the capital cost, for the upgrade of existing water transport terminals, the estimated cost is Rs 5 crore per terminal. As per the report, by 2031, the realistic number of trips on these routes will 2.44 lakh while in 2041, it will be 3.42 lakh. Among the civil infrastructure requirements, the study report has listed terminals or jetties with passenger amenities, floating pontoons and gangways, boatyards for vessel maintenance and repairs, night parking and fueling jetties, development of access roads and parking facilities and non-motorised transport (NMT).

PDP chief urges MEA to ensure safety of students in Iran
Former J&K chief minister (CM) Mehbooba Mufti has sought Centre's intervention for safeguarding Kashmiri students studying in Iran, and J&K Students Association has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the same. Thousands of students from J&K are waiting for evacuation from different cities of Iran, with escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. Former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said that central government should ensure safety of students. 'Families of the stranded students in Iran are growing increasingly anxious with each passing day. I earnestly urge the ministry of external affairs to intervene and take immediate steps to ensure the safe return of their loved ones,' Mehbooba Mufti wrote on X. Prominent Shia leader and general secretary of Peoples Conference Imran Reza Ansari said that government of India is working on evacuation of Indian nationals and J&K students. 'Spoke to HE Ambassador of Republic of India in Iran Rudra Gaurav Shresth. He is personally monitoring the situation and is ensuring the safety of the Indian nationals and students from Jammu and Kashmir They are working on evacuation of the students in Tehran to a safer location for the time being. We have complete faith and trust in all the officials at the mission in Tehran,' he wrote on X. Meanwhile J&K Students Association in a letter to the PM has requested immediate intervention and evacuation of the Kashmiri students. The letter said that the dire situation is faced by hundreds of Kashmiri students currently studying in Iran, following the unprecedented escalation in hostilities between Iran and Israel. 'The recent Israeli preemptive airstrikes on Iran's nuclear infrastructure, followed by a barrage of retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Iran, have brought the region to the brink of a full-scale conflict. This volatile security environment has left thousands of Indian students, majority of them from Kashmir valley, extremely vulnerable and exposed to immediate danger. These students had travelled to Iran to pursue professional education, particularly MBBS, due to the country's economically viable academic infrastructure. Now, they find themselves in the middle of an active military zone, fearful for their lives,' reads the letter. The letter said that numerous students have contacted the Indian Embassy in Tehran seeking support, relocation, or evacuation. 'However, they have not received any reassuring response or concrete information about what the next steps will be. They remain in a state of confusion and despair, with no clarity about evacuation plans, safety protocols, or emergency assistance. We earnestly urge you to direct the external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar to take urgent steps to relocate the students to safer areas within Iran and initiate immediate evacuation efforts. This will provide much-needed relief and assurance to the distressed families back home.'

CM releases Rs 561 cr relief for over 11,000 families that lost breadwinners
1 2 Ambedkar Nagar: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath released Rs 561.86 crore to 11,690 families who lost their primary breadwinners, under the Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Kalyan Yojana on Monday. While the CM personally handed the amount to beneficiaries in Ambedkar Nagar, the govt released this amount to all beneficiaries across 350 tehsils in the state. E xpressing grief at the deaths, Yogi said his govt would do whatever necessary for farmers and their families. He said that there was no budgetary limitation to the scheme and more beneficiaries will continue to receive assistance as the year progresses. "Earlier, only the farmer was eligible for benefits under this scheme; the policy has been revised and sharecroppers, agricultural labourers, and family members of farmers who fall victim to disasters such as fire, storms, lightning, or floods are also covered under it. The total assistance amount of approximately Rs 21 crore was directly transferred to the beneficiaries' bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer. The Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Kalyan Yojana came into effect on September 14, 2019. The CM said that in 2020-21, the government issued Rs 500 crore to 11,275 dependents. In 2021–22, assistance of Rs 600 crore was provided to 13,645 families. In 2022–23, Rs 650 crore was provided to 15,231 families. In 2023–24, 23,821 families received support of Rs 950 crore. In 2024–25, the amount was raised to Rs 1,000 crore, benefiting 25,575 dependents. In 2025–26, the fund was further increased to Rs 1,050 crore, which is currently benefiting 11,690 10 districts benefited under the scheme
