Species of tropical bird among rarest sightings across Dorset during the 2020s
A number of rare birds have been spotted around Dorset in the 2020s, including a tropical species usually found in the Galapagos Islands.
The likes of the Red-footed booby, Eleonora's Falcon and Yelkouan Shearwater have made appearances in the last few years.
Keen birdwatchers have been out snapping and recording their sightings, hoping to capture some rarer finds.
Some of these sightings have been reported on the Bird Guides map, where you can look for where rare birds have been around the UK.
The Red-footed booby is a variant of the more common Blue-footed booby, and it is usually found around 6,000 miles away from the UK in the Galapagos Islands.
However, it has on a couple of occasions reportedly been spotted in Dorset, including in Portland in August 2021.

It took a few more years for another keen birdwatcher to spot one within the county.
In June 2024, one was spotted around 800 metres offshore from Worbarrow Bay.
Eleonora's Falcon has been spotted on a few occasions around Dorset in the last five years, starting in 2020.

It was reportedly first seen near Lytchett Bay in September of that year, before another couple of possible viewings in August 2021 near Cogden Beach and Tyneham.
According to the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), it is an "extremely rare visitor to Britain & Ireland".
Its breeding season is usually around July to August to take advantage of migrating birds travelling past its Mediterranean breeding colonies.

The Yelkouan Shearwater is the Mediterranean counterpart of the Manx Shearwater, according to the British Trust for Ornithology.
It is said to be an "extremely rare visitor to British & Irish waters" with its unique name deriving from the Turkish word 'Yelkovan', which means 'wind-chaser'.
According to the Birds Guide map, it was spotted twice in Dorset in 2020, with both occasions being in July.
An individual was seen among a group of Balearic Shearwaters near to Chesil Cove and Portland.
A cluster of sightings of Forster's Terns have been reported in Dorset in 2024 and 2025 (Image: Getty Images)
The Forster's Tern is a "rare visitor from North America", according to the BTO, with it being recorded sporadically around the winter months.
In appearance, it is similar to the Common Tern, but with a pale orange bill.
Sightings mostly correlate with returning individuals, which seems to be the case in Dorset.
A cluster of reports were made around Poole, Brownsea Island and Arne RSPB in late March and April 2024.
Again in 2025, a cluster of sightings were made in April in similar areas as well as Lytchett Bay.

Only one sighting of the Short-toed Snake Eagle has been recorded in the county in the last five years.

According to the eBird website, it is a "large, slightly ungainly raptor with long and very broad wings, a shortish tail, and a conspicuously big head".
It adds: "Pale belly and underwings contrast with the darker head in most adults, but juveniles have pale heads. All age groups have a tendency to look a bit dishevelled."
The bird is mostly seen around mainland Europe, very rarely venturing over to the UK.
One was found injured on the beach near Hengistbury Head in October 2020 and was taken into care.

World's Tallest Railway Bridge Opens With Trains 1,178ft Above the Ground
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Trains have begun operating across the world's tallest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Rail Bridge, which towers 1,178 feet above the Chenab River in India. The bridge, located in the Reasi district, officially opened on Friday, June 6, after an inauguration ceremony led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Jammu and Kashmir region this morning. Why It Matters The Chenab Rail Bridge's completion bridges links Kashmir to the rest of India via railway for the first time. Modi's inauguration of the bridge underlines India's hold on Kashmir just weeks after an insurgent attack on tourists in Pahalgam killed 26 people and prompted the biggest confrontation in decades with Pakistan, which India blamed for the attack despite its denials. Getty Images What To Know The Chenab Rail Bridge is a steel and concrete structure stretching 4,314 feet across the Chenab River gorge. Its main deck is raised 1,178 feet above the riverbed, making it both the highest rail bridge and the tallest arch bridge on the planet. This structure is taller than France's Eiffel Tower in height, and its opening coincided with the launch of new Vande Bharat Express trains on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link. The bridge was designed by WSP Finland and built under the supervision of the Konkan Railway Corporation. Blast-proof steel and self-compacting concrete were used in its construction due to seismic risks and security concerns. The bridge is engineered to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8 and wind speeds up to 266 km/h (165 miles per hour) A graph comaparing the height of the Chenab Rail Bridge to other landmarks. A graph comaparing the height of the Chenab Rail Bridge to other landmarks. Flourish Unlike a suspension bridge, arch bridges are more rigid and less flexible under pressure, but are better for supporting heavy loads like trains. Construction took place in a section of the Himalayan mountains, which complicated the transport of materials and machinery. The Chenab Bridge will complete the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, a 169-mile project aimed at integrating Kashmir Valley with the rest of India. The bridge's completion is expected to stimulate tourism, improve logistics for agriculture and industry, and enhance military mobility where needed. The Chenab bridge overtook the Najiehe Railway Bridge in Guizhou, China, which is 310 meters tall (1,017 feet) and had been the tallest rail bridge since its opening in 2016. The bridging of the Chenab has been discussed since the late 1970s. The foundation for broader railway integration in Kashmir was laid in 1983, with significant progress only materializing in the 2000s. After numerous delays for safety and design reassessment, the main arch was completed in April 2021. What People Are Saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the inauguration event, said: "The Tricolour flies high over the Chenab Rail Bridge! It's a feeling of immense pride that this bridge seamlessly blends ambition with execution, reflecting India's growing capability to build futuristic infrastructure in the most challenging terrains. What Happens Next Regular passenger trains, including Vande Bharat Express services, are now set to operate along the USBRL with the Chenab Bridge as a central link.

Louis Vuitton's Saint-Tropez Restaurant Is Back With a Michelin Star
The Arnaud Donckele & Maxime Frédéric atLouis Vuittonrestaurant has set up shop at the White 1921 Saint-Tropez for the third consecutive year. This time, however, the bougie dining locale is back with a newly earned Michelin star. Chef Arnaud Donckele and chef pâtissier Maxime Frédéric have unveiled a seasonal menu guided by three pillars: international food, disruptive dishes, and cultural meals. The chefs, both of whom are from Normandy, place a special emphasis on French and Mediterranean cuisine, but international flavors contribute to the menu's travel-by-plate mentality. Among the best-rated dishes are the Wagyu beef, which is served in a seasoned broth, and the grilled blue lobster, which is dressed with shiso-infused sauce. The Louis Vuitton restaurant features all sorts of nods to the French megabrand's core identity, including trunk-shaped side tables, Monogram-inspired tableware from the 'Art de la Table' collection, and even desserts modeled after the label's signature shapes and motifs. The alfresco dining area is filled with white and blue sofas, which are enclosed by lush greenery decorated with logomanic flowers. The Arnaud Donckele & Maxime Frédéric at Louis Vuitton restaurant is now open at Hotel White 1921 in Saint-Tropez, France, and reservations can be made on the brand's website. Take a look inside the restaurant in the gallery above.
