Dubai's Al Ghurair Centre opens new 21 Café run by staff with Down Syndrome
Al Ghurair Centre, the Middle East's first modern shopping mall, has unveiled 21 Café, Dubai's first food and beverage establishment operated entirely by staff with Down Syndrome.
The initiative comes as part of Dubai's ongoing commitment to support people of determination, ensuring inclusivity across all sectors of society.

Down Syndrome, which affects approximately one in 800 births globally, has a higher prevalence in the Middle East at 2.2 per 1,000 live births, according to figures from the Centre for Arab Genomic Studies.
Beyond medical challenges, individuals with this genetic condition often encounter significant social barriers.
The café's name references Trisomy 21, the medical term describing the extra copy of chromosome 21 that causes Down Syndrome.
Raghu Raman, Owner and Managing Director of 21 Café, established the venue after being inspired by his son's experiences.
The establishment, located on the second floor of Al Ghurair Centre, represents a significant development during the UAE's designated Year of Community, showcasing the emirate's dedication to accessibility and inclusion.
Medical experts note that whilst those with Down Syndrome face developmental challenges, supportive environments can facilitate significant achievements.

Director RS Prasanna says 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is an 'honest film'
Director RS Prasanna has shared his excitement and insights about his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, which stars Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and actress Genelia Deshmukh in the lead. The film, set to release on June 20, 2025, has already generated buzz, especially after the release of its trailer in May. Sitaare Zameen Par is a sequel to Khan's 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. The film faced criticism for perceived similarities with the international film Champions, a remake of the Spanish drama Campeones. Yet, Prasanna remains confident in his film's unique approach and powerful message. "... the core emotion comes from Taare Zameen Par. The thought and the mindset began with that film," he said. "Hopefully, this picture will take that thought and mindset in a new direction." The director revealed how the idea of Sitaare Zameen Par came about, recounting a personal memory from 2007 when Aamir Khan won the Best Debut Director award for Taare Zameen Par. "As we began pre-production, I kept referencing Taare Zameen Par," he shared, adding, "Aamir Sir and I often discussed scenes from that film. One day, he suggested that we view Sitaare Zameen Par as an extension of that emotion. It was a natural progression." Sitaare Zameen Par casts actors with special needs, including individuals with Down's syndrome and autism. "...They're the true heroes of this film," he said. "We couldn't have made this film without them." The director elaborated on the challenges and joys of working with these exceptional actors. "It was not difficult to direct them. They were the ones who directed us," Prasanna admitted, adding, "They taught us how to interact with them. All we needed to do was guide them on technical aspects like camera angles and lighting. Their acting was natural, real, and powerful. They made the set a better place." Prasanna also highlighted the role of casting directors Tess Joseph and Anmol Ahuja in the lengthy audition process, which included over 2,500 auditions and workshops. Prasanna was all praise for Aamir Khan, describing him as not just a star but also an ideal collaborator. "There is something called Aamir magic," the director said. Abu Dhabi's Life Endowment campaign raises Dh115m in first week
Abu Dhabi's recently launched endowment campaign to support patients with chronic diseases who are unable to cover the cost of treatment has raised Dh115 million in its first week. The money was given to Awkwaf Abu Dhabi for the campaign by 33,000 contributors, including both institutions and people. 'This outpouring of support reflects a deep understanding of the endowment's power to uplift those most vulnerable, particularly by providing access to sustainable healthcare," said Fahad Abdul Qader Al Qassim, director general of Awqaf Abu Dhabi. 'The campaign's success just one week after launch highlights the UAE's strong commitment to ensuring that patients in need can have access to world-class, sustainable healthcare, enabling them to return to their lives and embrace the future with confidence." Under the slogan With you for Life, the campaign has been launched during the Year of Community and will help to cover treatment costs for people while supporting the research and development of pharmaceutical drugs. It is hoped the campaign can raise Dh1 billion ($272 million). The fund will be continuous and have no end date, Mr Al Qassim said at the launch. 'Assets will be invested and the returns will be spent on treatment, which means that we have a sustainable financial instrument and product that gives returns every single year,' he added. 'This endowment caters for the weakest point in the community and a lot of those people are actually non-UAE nationals. UAE nationals today, at the end of the day, they do get the treatment from the government by the leadership. Expats today are more vulnerable in terms of the weaker point of the community. 'Endowments are here to stay for generations. It's not for the next two years, and then it will be mothballed or to a different initiative. No, it will continue to be there, hopefully for generations to come.' The initiative also focuses on sustainability and community development, while highlighting the UAE's role in championing charitable and humanitarian campaigns. Dr Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, said when the campaign was launched that it reflected the UAE's commitment to empowering people and improving public health. 'This initiative supports our continuing efforts to enhance quality of life and ensure access to specialised, integrated and effective health care that places patients at the heart of the system,' she said. Abu Dhabi's Department of Health will oversee the health-related aspects of the endowment, ensuring contributions are directed effectively to support specialised care and reach those who need the funds most. The campaign has two fund-raising arms – the Emirates Red Crescent Authority, which has been a leading humanitarian entity since 1983, and the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an, Abu Dhabi's official channel to receive social contributions.
