JAL insolvency: Lenders reject Jaypee Infratech's request to accept its bid to acquire bankrupt firm
Jaiprakash Associates Ltd
(JAL) have turned down
Jaypee Infratech
's request to accept its resolution plan to acquire the bankrupt diversified company.
Five companies --
Adani Enterprises
, Vedanta Group, Dalmia Bharat Cement, Jindal Power and
PNC Infratech
-- have submitted their
resolution plans
to acquire JAL.
However, lenders of JAL, on June 25, had rejected the resolution plan of Suraksha Group-owned Jaypee Infratech Ltd as the bid was submitted late and without earnest money.
According to sources, Jaypee Infratech requested the Committee of Creditors (CoC) of JAL to reconsider the decision to reject its bid. It sought permission to participate in the insolvency process.
In a meeting on July 1, the members of the CoC unanimously agreed not to change its earlier decision to reject Jaypee Infratech's resolution plan, they added.
Live Events
In the meeting, the resolution professional also presented a brief summary of the five resolution plans, according to sources.
A detailed summary of all five resolution plans would be prepared, based on which the highest bidder will be determined, they added.
Some of the bids are conditional and linked to the outcome of the pending legal cases, they said.
JAL, which has business interests spanning real estate, cement manufacturing, hospitality, and engineering & construction, was admitted into the
Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process
(CIRP) through the National Company Law Tribunal, Allahabad Bench, order dated June 3, 2024.
JAL was taken to insolvency proceedings after the conglomerate defaulted on the payment of loans.
Creditors are claiming a staggering Rs 57,185 crore.
The National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL) leads the list of claimants after acquiring the stressed JAL loans from a consortium of lenders headed by the
State Bank of India
(SBI).
JAL has major real estate projects like Jaypee Greens in Greater Noida, a part of Jaypee Greens Wishtown in Noida (both on the outskirts of the national capital), and the Jaypee International Sports City, strategically located near the upcoming Jewar International Airport.
It also has three commercial/industrial office spaces in Delhi-NCR, while its hotel division has five properties in Delhi-NCR, Mussoorie, and Agra.
JAL has four cement plants in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and a few leased limestone mines in Madhya Pradesh. The cement plants, however, are non-operational.
It also has investments in subsidiaries, including Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd, Yamuna Expressway Tolling Ltd, Jaypee Infrastructure Development Ltd and several other companies.
Jaypee Group's Jaypee Infratech has already been acquired by Mumbai-based Suraksha Group through an insolvency process.
Suraksha Group has to complete various stalled projects comprising around 20,000 apartments in Noida and Greater Noida.

Reuters' X account blocked in India; govt says no legal requirement made
International news agency Reuters' X account has been withheld in India 'in response to a legal demand', as per notice displayed by the social media platform. However, a government spokesperson said there is no legal requirement made by it to withhold the account and it is working with X to resolve the issue. Reuters' X account is likely to be restored soon. 'There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold Reuters and we are continuously working with X to resolve the problem,' the spokesperson said. Sources said a demand for blocking of Reuters' X account alongside several hundreds of other accounts was made during Operation Sindoor in May. While several accounts were blocked from accessing in India, Reuters handle wasn't. Elon Musk-owned X seems to have now acted on that request and blocked Reuters' X handle in India. And since the issue isn't relevant now, the government has asked X to explain the blocking and lift the embargo. The official accounts of Chinese media organisation Global Times and Turkish media house TRT World on X were also blocked again citing legal demand, which the government said was not required now. 'There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold Global times news/trtworld handle. We are continuously working with X to resolve the problem,' the spokesperson said. On random check it was found that Chinese Xinhua News and some other media outlets, that were also blocked during Operation Sindoor, continued to be accessible. 'An order was issued on May 7 (during Operation Sindoor) but it was not enforced. X seems to have enforced that order now which is a mistake on their part. Government has reached out to X for resolving it at the earliest,' an official source said. An email sent to Reuters seeking comments did not elicit a response. While affiliated X handles such as Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Asia, and Reuters China are accessible in India, both official X accounts of the global news agency as well as Reuters World handles are inaccessible. X users attempting to access the main account can see a message that reads: 'Account withheld. @ Reuters has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand.' On its help centre page, X explains such messages 'about country withheld content' means X was compelled to withhold the entire account specified or posted in response to a valid legal demand, such as a court order or local laws. Rajnath Singh to kick off discussions on defence financial architecture tomorrow
Policy dialogue, strategic review, and institutional innovation are expected to dominate discussions at the Controllers' Conference 2025 of the Defence Accounts Department (DAD) that will be inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday, an official said. The conference, to be held here from July 7 to 9, aims to bring together top leadership from the DAD, civil services, academia, think tanks, and stakeholders across the defence and finance sectors. 'It serves as a vital platform for evaluating challenges, initiating reform, and advancing the role of financial governance in defence preparedness,' said the Defence Ministry in a statement on Sunday. Rajnath Singh will inaugurate the conference in the presence of top military and civilian leadership, including Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, the three service chiefs and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. Financial Adviser, Defence Services, S.G. Dastidar, and Controller General of Defence Accounts, Mayank Sharma, will also join the conference that promises to serve as a platform for shaping the future of India's defence financial architecture, the statement said. The theme of this year's conference, 'Transforming Financial Advice, Payment, Audit and Accounting through Defence Finance and Economics,' reflects a paradigm shift within the department, repositioning the DAD from a finance and accounts body to a future-ready institution focused on defence finance and economics, it said. This transformation, guided by the strategic vision articulated by the Defence Minister on October 1, 2024, is internally driven, inclusive, and aligned with emerging national security imperatives. The transition is anchored in the DAD's new Mission Statement and Motto 'Alert, Agile, Adaptive' which will be formally released during the event, said the statement. The conference will feature eight high-level business sessions (Manan Satras), covering areas such as budget and accounts reform, internal audit restructuring, collaborative research, pricing innovation, and capacity building. These sessions will explore the evolving role of Integrated Financial Advisors in balancing fiscal prudence with strategic support for a competitive and self-reliant defence industry. Managing a defence budget of Rs 26.8 lakh crore, including Rs 1.7 lakh crore dedicated to pensions, the DAD plays a pivotal role in payroll, pension disbursement, audit, procurement pricing, and strategic financial advice, said the statement.

India has never seen shortage of fuels: Hardeep Puri
Highlighting the government's achievements in the oil and gas sector, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Sunday said that "whether it was the period of the global Covid pandemic or global conflict, there has never been a shortage of petroleum products in India". "This has been possible due to the foresight of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," he remarked. He was referring to the geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which peaked during the Israeli attack on Iran, during which shipping was disrupted and there were threats of closure of the Strait of Hormuz through which 20 per cent of the world's oil and gas exports are shipped out from the Gulf region. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have diversified our supplies in the past few years, and a large volume of our supplies do not come through the Strait of Hormuz now," the minister had stated earlier. India imports around 85 per cent of its crude oil requirement, and a surge in oil prices leads to an increase in its oil import bill and pushes up the rate of inflation, which hurts economic growth. However, it has diversified its oil sources by increasing imports from Russia as well as the US and building resilience through strategic reserves. Highlighting the infrastructure milestones in the oil and gas sector, Puri said that the country now has 23 modern operational refineries with a total capacity of 257 million metric tonnes per annum to produce petroleum products. The minister also highlighted the ministry's initiative in setting up storage facilities for strategic petroleum reserves, on which the country can fall back in times of emergency and which assume importance during times of geopolitical uncertainty. The storage capacity includes 2.25 million metric tonnes (MMT) at Pudur, the Visakhapatnam facility has the capacity to store 1.33 MMT of crude oil, while Mangalore has a storage capacity of 1.5 MMT. The Minister also underscored that India has achieved the target of 20 per cent ethanol blending with petrol ahead of schedule as part of the country's drive to push green fuels. E20 ethanol-blended petrol is now being made available to fuel vehicles at all the retail outlets of the public sector companies - Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum - nationwide. The minister stated that India has achieved the target of 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol in early 2025, which is six years ahead of the original deadline of 2030, reflecting the strong progress in the country's journey towards cleaner fuels. "This achievement not only reduces the country's carbon emissions but also saves huge amounts of money. In the process, we have saved Rs 1 lakh crore upwards. Rs 1.5 lakh crore of foreign exchange because of the import bill, and we have given that to our farmers," the minister said recently.
