Odisha: Woman dragged by crocodile into Kharasrota river, remains untraced
Kendrapara, June 16 (UNI) In yet another case of man-crocodile conflict in Odisha's coastal Kendrapara district, a 40-year-old woman went missing today after being dragged into the water by the reptile at Pania Jora, a spot connected to the Kharasrota river.
According to sources, Kajal Mohanty, a resident of Danladiha village under Koladiha Gram Panchayat in Aul police limits, was bathing at Pania Jora with her two daughters when a large saltwater crocodile suddenly attacked and dragged her into the river.
Upon receiving information, fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and, with the help of local residents, launched a search and rescue operation. However, as of the last report, the woman remains untraced.
Locals suspect that the crocodile may have carried her deeper into the Kharasrota river.
Residents alleged that despite repeatedly requesting the Forest Department and local administration to install fencing at the bathing ghats along crocodile-infested rivers, no protective measures have been taken so far.
It is worth noting that incidents of human-crocodile conflict occur frequently in the district, particularly in the blocks of Pattamundai, Kendrapara, Rajnagar, Aul, Rajkanika, and Mahakalapada.
Such conflicts are especially common during the crocodile breeding season from June to August, when the reptiles often become more aggressive and prone to attacking humans in the water. UNI XC DP SSP

In 4 new posts in SSC, Kolkata Police, shadow of job scam and RG Kar
The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday approved the creation of four new posts – two in the School Service Commission (SSC) and two in the Kolkata Police Commissionerate. The Cabinet, under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, gave its nod to the creation of two Joint Secretary posts in the SSC. Sources in the state Education Department said that while one joint secretary will look after the administration, the other will look after the examination. 'The School Service Commission has only one secretary and one assistant secretary. It is impossible to look after all the issues by these two officers. That is why the government created two more posts, so that they can assist the examination process and other administrative issues,' a senior official of the state Education Department said. Officials said that these two posts were created following the Supreme Court's order cancelling the appointment of over 25,000 school staff, citing the 2016 recruitment exam as 'tainted'. 'To overcome the corruption image and to bring transparency in the examination process, these two posts have been created,' the official added. In Kolkata Police Commissionerate, a new post of Joint Commissioner of Police (Legal) has been set up, who will look after the legal framework of sensitive cases and will guide the investigators accordingly, officials said. The decision, sources said, was taken following largescale criticism of Kolkata Police handling the RG rape and murder case that led to widespread protests in the state as well as the country. Another post of Joint Commissioner (Cyber) has also been created in Kolkata Police to tackle the rising cases of cyber crimes. 'Now, cyber crimes have increased several times and it needs more focus and attention. For that reason, the cyber cell should be expanded and for that a separate senior officer needs to be there,' a senior state police officer said. Form student advisory panels in all schools: HC to edu dept
Madurai: Madras high court recently directed the school education department to constitute student safeguarding advisory committees in schools across the state. The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed by advocate G Shabna of Theni district. The petitioner sought a direction to the school education department authorities to constitute student safeguarding advisory committees in govt schools, create awareness among the students about the committee, and ensure teaching and non-teaching staff complete an annual mandatory orientation programme on the Pocso Act. The petitioner's counsel submitted that a GO was issued by the school education department in 2021, providing guidelines to protect and safeguard students from sexual harassment. As per the GO, student safeguarding advisory committees are to be constituted to create awareness among the students. In a status report, the director of the school education department submitted that 11,820 govt schools reconstituted the committees in Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Theni, Tirupattur, Tirupur, and Sivaganga districts. In the year 2023-24, these schools conducted a total of 42,126 committee meetings, and during 2024-25, a total of 42,194 meetings were conducted. Additionally, annual orientation training on Pocso Act awareness was conducted in 11,820 govt schools for the year 2023-24, in which 68,245 teachers and 46,281 other staff participated. For the year 2024-25, as many as 70,105 teachers and 49,974 other staff received orientation training on Pocso Act awareness. The authorities sought time to compile data for the remaining districts and produce the same before the court. A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete observed that the student safeguarding advisory committees were constituted in several areas; however, they are yet to be constituted in some areas across the state. Hence, the judges directed the authorities to collect the data in respect of the districts where the committees have not been constituted and initiate action to constitute the committees as per the 2021 GO, within eight weeks. The petition was disposed of and was posted for reporting compliance on August 5.
