Crystal Palace blast CAS ruling as Europa League demotion confirmed
UEFA demoted the Eagles to the Conference League on 11 July after it was determined that John Textor had control or influence at both Palace and French club Lyon. Nottingham Forest have taken the FA Cup winner's place in the Europa League.
The Court for Arbitration in Sport (CAS) dismissed Palace's appeal this week, ruling that Textor had 'decisive influence' over both the south London outfit and Lyon at the time of UEFA's assessment.
Crystal Palace blast CAS ruling as Europa League demotion confirmed
Palace say 'sporting merit is rendered meaningless' by the verdict and claim that it 'appears that certain clubs, organisations and individuals have a unique privilege and power'.
The statement continues 'Multi-club structures hide behind the charade of a 'blind trust' while clubs such as ours, who have no connection to another club whatsoever, are prevented from playing in the same competition.
'To compound the injustice, clubs that appear to have huge informal arrangements with each other are also allowed to participate and even possibly play against each other.
'While we respect the CAS tribunal members, the process is designed to severely restrict and, in our case, make it almost impossible to receive a fair hearing.

'The denial of all disclosure requests to obtain correspondence between the relevant parties, the refusal to allow witness testimony from those involved, and the general lack of formality and respect for law mean decisions cannot be properly challenged, leading to pre-determined outcomes.
'Uefa's decision has wider implications for the governance of the sport. A combination of poorly conceived regulations and their unequal application means our brilliant fans will be deprived of the chance to watch this team compete in the Europa League for the first time in our history.
'This should be a turning point for football.'

When does the Premier League season start? Here's the Matchweek 1 schedule
When does the Premier League season start? Here's the Matchweek 1 schedule originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia The world's biggest soccer league is back. After Liverpool won the title back in May, the Premier League is ready to go for another 38-game campaign — along with the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and European competitions for qualified teams. Liverpool will be among the favorites to win the league again following a busy transfer window that has seen the club spend well over $300 million. And with more signings on the way — possibly Newcastle's Alexander Isak — the sum could very well approach $500 million. Having finished second in each of the last three campaigns with no other trophies to show for it, Arsenal are likely in desperation mode under Mikel Arteta. The club signed one of Europe's hottest strikers in Viktor Gyokeres and will be in contention again should they stay healthy, unlike what transpired in the second half of last season. Manchester City will hope for a rebound campaign following a season that saw them fall short on many fronts. Known for passing teams out of the park and not allowing a sniff defensively, the Citizens failed to control games like they used to while being a mess in transition. Pep Guardiola's side spent considerable money in January and have been busy once again in the summer, so they'll be a side to watch for. Among the additional hopeful contenders are Chelsea, the newest Club World Cup winners, though they need to show consistency over the course of a full season. Tottenham and Manchester United are also looking to crack the top four again after both teams finished 17th and 15th last season, respectively. New to the league this season are Sunderland, back for the first time since 2017, as well as Burnley and Leeds, both of which have been in England's top flight within the last three seasons. Here's everything to know about the Matchweek 1 schedule and where to watch the action: When does the 2025-26 Premier League season start? The action begins on Friday, Aug. 15, when Liverpool host Bournemouth at 3 p.m. ET, 12 p.m. PT. Where to watch Premier League Matchweek 1 games Some games will be available to watch on TV via NBC and the USA Network, while others will stream exclusively on Peacock. Palace hit out at Cas and Uefa after losing appeal
Crystal Palace have said "sporting merit is rendered meaningless" after losing their appeal against demotion from the Europa League to the Conference League. After winning the FA Cup last season, Palace qualified for Europe's secondary competition but were punished by Uefa for breaching multi-club ownership rules. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) sided with Europe's governing body on Monday. In a strongly worded statement, Palace said it was " almost impossible to receive a fair hearing." "The decision by Uefa and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless," Palace said. "It appears that certain clubs, organisations and individuals have a unique privilege and power. "This growing and unhealthy influence has shattered the hopes and dreams of Crystal Palace supporters, and does not bode well for aspirational teams all over Europe competing to progress when rules and sanctions are unevenly applied in the most flagrant way." Palace added they will "continue to take legal advice on the next steps" as they prepare to compete in the Conference League. BBC Sport has contacted Uefa for a response. Nottingham Forest finished seventh in the Premier League last season and have been promoted to the Europa League in Palace's place. "Multi-club structures hide behind the charade of a 'blind trust' while clubs such as ours, who have no connection to another club whatsoever, are prevented from playing in the same competition," Palace said. "To compound the injustice, clubs that appear to have huge informal arrangements with each other are also allowed to participate and even possibly play against each other." The Eagles had until 1 March 2025 to show Uefa proof of multi-club ownership restructuring, but missed the deadline. American businessman John Textor owned a 43% stake in Palace but sold it in June and is the majority owner of Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Cas said that Textor "still had decisive influence over both clubs" at the time of Uefa's assessment. The panel also dismissed Palace's argument that they received unfair treatment in comparison to Nottingham Forest and Lyon. 'This should be a turning point' There is precedent for teams being sanctioned by Uefa and for Cas to uphold that decision for breaching multi-club ownership rules. Irish Premier Division side Drogheda qualified for the 2025-26 Conference League but have been expelled from Europe due to US-based Trivela Group also owning Danish side Silkeborg, who also earned a spot in the competition. "Uefa's decision has wider implications for the governance of the sport," Palace added. "This should be a turning point for football. Uefa must fulfil its mandate to pass coherent rules which are properly communicated and applied, with reasonable cure periods to resolve uncertainty and consistent sanctions, treating all clubs equally with a proper appeal process. "The European Court of Justice has made it clear that rulings similar to this will be under greater scrutiny from national courts in future. Only then will fairness and due process be granted to every team." Palace will face either Norwegian side Fredrikstad or Midtjylland of Denmark in the Conference League play-off round later this month. Kubo linked to Atletico Madrid
Kubo linked to Atletico Madrid originally appeared on The Sporting News Diego Simeone's Colchoneros seem to be interested in bringing in a winger before their summer transfer window is done. Previously linked to Nicolas Gonzalez from Juventus, now Marca report that they are looking at Real Sociedad and Japanese winger Takefusa Kubo. Kubo is an exciting winger who has been known since his youth days in La Masia and La Fabrica as he was once dubbed "The Japanese Messi". It's clear that Atletico aren't done with their summer business and still feel a need for a winger and Kubo is a more exciting signing than Nicolas Gonzalez. He's electric with the ball at his feet and has seemed for a while like a player who's destined for a move to a bigger club. With Real Sociedad being on a decline, it's seeming like the right time for Kubo to find that big move away. Nicolas Gonzalez is the cheaper option that is likely more feasible, but this feels like a case of paying for the more expensive player seems worth it. Kubo brings more of something that Atletico are missing in a one-on-one dribbler. Atletico may be hesitant though as there have been links to Premier League teams and his release clause is set at 60 million euros. There is also the fact that Real Madrid have a 50% sell-on clause meaning they would be directly funding their bitter rivals. We will see which one Atletico bring in but it's been shown by this window that they are going all out this season.
