Former Pac-12 Assistant Joins HBCU Hoops Contender
Alabama A&M just made a power move. Head coach Dawn Thornton announced the addition of veteran coach Paul Reed as the program's new associate head coach. The hire brings high-major experience, a reputation for developing talent, and a Pac-12 résumé packed with postseason success to HBCU women's basketball on The Hill.
Reed, whose coaching stops include Cal, Washington, and Long Beach State, steps into the Bulldogs' program with a clear mandate. To elevate the team's culture and competitiveness in the SWAC.
"We are thrilled to welcome Paul Reed as our Associate Head Coach," said Thornton. "Paul brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of developing talent and building winning programs. His dedication to fostering strong relationships with players and his commitment to excellence on and off the court make him an invaluable addition to our team."
This is more than a résumé hire-it's a statement of intent. A&M is aiming higher.
Reed spent last season in a support role at St. Mary's. Still, his most impactful recent work came at the University of Washington. He helped steer the Huskies to a Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinal appearance. That run included a decisive 68–54 upset of No. 6-seed Colorado. At UW, Reed didn't just collect wins-he developed stars. Three Huskies earned All-Pac-12 honors under his watch, and an impressive 11 players landed spots on the Pac-12 All-Academic Team.
Before Washington, Reed was part of a resurgent Long Beach State program that tallied 69 wins in three seasons, racked up three straight 20-win campaigns, and earned a Big West Tournament title in 2017 to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The years prior brought back-to-back WNIT berths, showcasing his consistency in keeping programs competitive deep into March.
Before his collegiate coaching climb, Reed dominated the Arizona high school basketball scene. At Cienega High School, he went 45–13 in two seasons and was named Southern Arizona Coach of the Year after leading the Bobcats to a regional title and state runner-up finish in 2014.
Go further back, and the trail continues at Tucson High, where Reed stacked four state tournament appearances, three regional championships, and a 129–63 record across six seasons. He's been building programs from the grassroots up for decades, mentoring McDonald's All-American nominees and directing offseason player development for top high school and college athletes in the Tucson area.
And while most know him for his basketball mind, Reed is also a former USA Today Small College All-American defensive back at Langston University, an HBCU in Oklahoma, where he earned his degree in psychology before adding a master's in education from the University of Phoenix.
This is a high-level chess move for Alabama A&M women's basketball. Reed isn't just a sideline veteran-he's a culture shifter. He's walked the halls of Power 4 programs, coached in packed March Madness arenas, and still has the recruiting chops to bring top-tier talent into the fold. For an HBCU program looking to make noise in the SWAC and beyond, Paul Reed might be the X-factor.

Senegal women's basketball team members denied US visas, prime minister says
The Senegalese women's basketball team has scrapped plans to train in the U.S. for the upcoming AfroBasket tournament in the Ivory Coast next month after several players and team officials had their visas denied, Senegal's prime minister said. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said on Facebook Thursday that the team would train in Senegal's capital, Dakar, 'in a sovereign and conducive setting.' The West African nation's federation said in a statement that the visa applications of five players and seven officials weren't approved. 'Informed of the refusal of issuing visas to several members of the Senegal women's national basketball team, I have instructed the Ministry of Sports to simply cancel the 10-day preparatory training initially planned in the United States of America,' Sonko said. The visa denials come amid a push by the Trump administration to have countries improve vetting travelers or face a ban on their citizens visiting the United States. Senegal wasn't on that list of countries and it was not immediately clear why the visas were denied. The travel ban includes exemptions for the World Cup, the Olympics and any 'other major sporting event,' though it's unclear what is considered a major event. The team is coached by Otis Hughley Jr., who previously led the Nigerian women's basketball team. He was the men's coach at Alabama A&M before resigning in March. Senegal, which was going to train in the U.S. from Sunday through July 3, has finished either first or second in four of the last five AfroBasket championships over the last decade and has won 11 titles in total. The tournament determines Africa's champion, which earns entry into the FIBA World Cup next year in Germany. ___

Patriots 'Would Be Freaking Silly' to Leave UDFA Efton Chism Off 53-Man Roster
Patriots 'Would Be Freaking Silly' to Leave UDFA Efton Chism Off 53-Man Roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The hype around the New England Patriots' changes this offseason has been palpable, and one undrafted rookie is a big part of that excitement. Efton Chism III, a 23-year-old out of Eastern Washington, signed with the Patriots this offseason. Advertisement Chism has been the talk of the offseason in Foxborough, known for his sure hands and talent as a route runner. His former head coach at Monroe High School, Michael Bumpus, spoke to WEEI 93.7 FM's Meghan Ottolini about Chism. Chism grew up in a small town outside of Seattle, Washington, called Monroe. That is where Bumpus, who played for the Seattle Seahawks for one season, began training Chism in the sixth grade. He knows the young wideout better than anyone else. 'The Patriots would be freaking silly not to put this kid on the 53-man [roster]," Bumpus said. New England Patriots wide receiver Efton Chism III (86) reacts to beating wide receiver Javon Baker (6) in a drill during minicamp at Gillette Canha-Imagn Images So why was Chism an undrafted free agent? Well, he quite literally did not "measure up" to what teams were looking for. Advertisement Chism ran a 4.71s 40-yard dash and measured at just 5'10", 195lbs at the NFL combine. But like Bumpus, NFL Analyst Lance Zierlein also saw something in the wideout while scouting him before the NFL Draft. "The real eye-opener is Chism's blend of play strength and competitiveness. He can make the first tackler miss and will do whatever it takes to pick up yardage," Zierlein said. The biggest obstacles in the way of Chism's road to the 53-man roster are recent draftees like Kyle Williams, Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, and Javon Baker. Add in free agent signings like Stefon Diggs, Kendrick Bourne, and Mack Hollins, and the outlook is even tougher for Chism. Advertisement That list totals seven wide receivers potentially ahead of Chism, but there is a shot he could knock off one or two of those guys. The wideout will likely have to prove himself during training camp and preseason, possibly on special teams, to make the 53-man roster.
