With internship becoming compulsory in colleges, Kolkata's oldest bookshop steps in to train students in publishing
With internships now compulsory for undergraduate students to obtain a degree under the National Education Policy (NEP, 2020) — a requirement that many colleges in West Bengal are finding challenging — Kolkata's oldest existing bookshop, Dasgupta and Co., has established itself as a platform for internships in publishing, claiming this to be a first for a Bengali publisher.
Although the College Street-based Dasgupta and Co., set up in 1886, initiated the programme exactly a year ago as the 'Publishing and Book Management Course' with the purpose of preparing students for careers in the publishing sector and across new-media platforms, the venture has gained significant traction this year, with students from as many as seven colleges enrolling.
'We have received a very good response this year. As many as 150 students from seven colleges have enrolled this year, mostly from their English departments. We hope young minds gain insight into the mechanism of the publishing industry and that this opportunity brings them better career prospects,' said Arabinda Das Gupta, managing director of Dasgupta and Co., which also operates as a publisher.
Classes are held for 15 days at the Asutosh Memorial Hall on Asutosh Mukherjee Road and cost ₹1,000 per student. Colleges that have enrolled for the course this year include Bethune College, Behala College, and Loreto College.
Educationist-writer Chinmoy Guha, Professor Emeritus of the University of Calcutta and former Vice-Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University, who inaugurated this year's internship programme at Dasgupta and Co., said the course was a great service to humankind as, even in the age of technological explosion, the book remains an 'eternal reservoir of ideas to which humanity will always remain grateful.'
'In these turbulent times, a book can still serve as a magic lantern for students. A computer will never fly with wings like a good book. Only a book can take us to the exquisite beauty of the blue sky! As Montesquieu reminded us, there is no earthly pain that a book cannot erase in an hour! I would tell the students to read a book 'in order to survive' — to quote Flaubert — in a world which is moving from darkness to darkness,' Prof. Guha said.
Two years ago, the bookshop decided to convert a part of its premises into a free library for the benefit of students who cannot afford books. However, since the building is a heritage structure and any new activity requires official clearance, a formal opening of the library continues to be delayed. But according to Mr. Gupta, the library has now started functioning 'unofficially,' with an average of 20 readers visiting daily.

Global Universities At Your Doorstep: Five Foreign Institutions Set To Open Campuses In Navi Mumbai
Campuses In Navi Mumbai: In a major step towards making Mumbai a global education hub, the University Grants Commission (UGC), in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, handed over Letters of Intent (LoIs) to five globally acclaimed universities to set up campuses in Maharashtra. These include the University of Aberdeen, University of York, University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Istituto Europeo di Design (IED). Held at the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, the event marked the beginning of the Maharashtra government's flagship 'EduCity' initiative, which will be located in Navi Mumbai as part of the planned 'Third Mumbai' — a project close to Chief Minister Fadnavis. 'No Dream Will Be Killed Anymore': Fadnavis Welcoming the institutions, Chief Minister Fadnavis said, 'We've heard for 20 years that esteemed global universities would come to India — today, we witnessed it happen. Thanks to Prime Minister Modi and the Union Minister of Education for leading this revolution. These five universities are coming to Maharashtra and opening the door to global students. It will give more accessibility and affordability to deserving students who otherwise couldn't go abroad. Now an ecosystem is being created so that no dream is killed.' Fadnavis also acknowledged UGC, CIDCO, and the Urban Development Department for enabling the project. 'This is just the beginning. We will not stop at five universities — we will create one of the biggest ecosystems of foreign universities in India, right here in Mumbai.' Dharmendra Pradhan: 'India is Being Positioned as a Global Knowledge Destination' Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted how reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 enabled foreign universities to operate in India. The UGC's policy was amended last year to facilitate this, and a similar model is already functional in Gujarat's GIFT City. He added that nine foreign universities have received LoIs so far, with six more in the pipeline. All classes are expected to begin by the next academic year, focusing on priority areas like STEM and business education. The government, he said, will not provide financial support but will act as a facilitator, ensuring global academic standards at lower costs for Indian students. Voices From the Universities Siladitya Bhattacharya, professor at the University of Aberdeen, the first Scottish university to branch out in India, called it a "significant milestone" and said many more institutions are keen to follow. Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India, called it a proud moment for the UK-India relationship, especially in education. Charlie Jeffrey, Vice Chancellor of the University of York, said the institution would maintain its research-intensive model in India, with a focus on AI, healthcare, and agriculture, embedded in local industries. He also drew a cultural connection, recalling how Sachin Tendulkar was the first overseas player signed by Yorkshire in 1992. Guy Littlefair, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Western Australia, highlighted the tie-up between Gondwana University in Gadchiroli and Curtin University in WA, pointing out shared expertise in mining — a key area for Maharashtra. Illinois Institute of Technology became the first US university to set up a campus in India. President Raj Echambadi, a Tamil Nadu-born American, said he was proud to bring the institution to the 'land of Nalanda.' He credited the NEP for enabling such global collaborations.

Five foreign universities announce campus in India, admissions in 2026: Check list of institutes
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formally issued Letters of Intent (LoIs) to leading universities from the UK, USA, Australia, and Italy, allowing them to establish campuses in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai region. The handover took place at a ceremony in Mumbai today, presided over by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, along with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, other deputy chief ministers, vice-chancellors of the participating universities, and various dignitaries and stakeholders. The universities receiving the LoIs include University of York (UK), University of Western Australia (UWA), University of Aberdeen (UK), Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), and IED Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy). Additionally, the University of Western Australia will also be establishing a second campus in Chennai. The issuance of LoIs marks a significant step toward implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020's vision for the internationalisation of higher education in India. With this, the recipient universities have received the official green-light to proceed with setting up their campuses in the country. Sources told the Indian Express has learnt that following the handing-over of Letters of Intent (LoIs) by the UGC, the universities now have an 18-month timeline within which they are likely to announce admissions for a fresh cohort. It is expected that the admission cycle for most of these institutions will commence sometime before December 2026. Earlier, two UK universities, the University of Southampton and the University of Liverpool — had announced their plans to open campuses in India. The University of Southampton will begin its first admission cycle this September at its Gurgaon campus, while the University of Liverpool is expected to start operations by September 2026 in Bengaluru. The universities are expected to be set up in Navi Mumbai, as part of a planned International Education City near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The initiative, led by the Government of Maharashtra with support from CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation), aims to create a dedicated 5-km education hub, the first of its kind in India, where students can access world-class international education without leaving the country. In May, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis had announced that CIDCO plans to establish this 'Edu City' in Navi Mumbai, which will host campuses of foreign universities for the first time in India.
