Inter Miami blasts MLS for ‘draconian' suspension of Lionel Messi

New York Post2 days ago
Inter Miami CF is furious about the suspension of two key players.
Both Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba will be forced to miss one game after sitting out of the MLS All-Star Game, and the club's co-owner, Jorge Mas, did not hold back when talking about how Inter Miami felt about the punishment.

'Lionel Messi is very upset, like we all are in the club, with the fact that they won't be able to play tomorrow night. But I think what we have to do as a club is to get together as one, have an attitude that is us against the world,' Mas said at a news conference Friday.
Inter Miami confirmed that the players did not decide to sit out the game but that the club made the call due to the number of games that were played in quick succession.
The team played nine games in just 36 days.
'I think that the punishment for the rule is frankly draconian,' Mas said.
Inter Miami will face off against FC Cincinnati on Saturday, the best team in the Eastern Conference.

'Obviously, it was not a positive reaction [from Messi and Alba],' Mas said. 'They want to compete, they want to play games. That's what they're here for — to play and win. They understand the magnitude of tomorrow night's game.'
The club said that if it finds itself in the same predicament again next year, the decision would not change, and they would rest whoever is an all-star at the time.
MLS commissioner Don Garber said the league will take 'a hard look at the policy moving forward.'

'I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve,' Garber added.
Despite Messi and Inter Miami currently sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference, they are only six points behind first-place Cincinnati.

River Plate has relied on him as their most important player this season. He's the player River looked to when it needed something special in attack. He made history with a stunning free-kick against Boca Juniors in the Superclasico and he was also the team penalty taker despite being just 17. It says a lot about his mature character, and he will need a wise head on young shoulders to succeed in the Real Madrid dressing room. Kelvin Yeboah scores 2 penalties late in 2nd half and Minnesota escapes with 2-1 win over St. Louis

Kelvin Yeboah converted two penalties as the second half wound down, lifting Minnesota to a 2-1 victory over St. Louis on Saturday night. Yeboah's first PK, in the 75th minute, came after Chris Durkin was shown the red card. Yeboah blasted a shot past Roman Bürki to the lower left zone. With St. Louis down a man, Minnesota kept the pressure on and a foul by Jaziel Orozco set up Yeboah's second PK — a blast past Bürki to the middle right zone just before stoppage time. Yeboah has nine goals this season. St. Louis' goal also came on a penalty, Eduard Löwen converting in the 36th minute. Dayne St. Clair had three saves for Minnesota and Bürki stopped two shots. Minnesota (12-5-8) ended a two-match winless streak and remains in third place in the Western Conference. Löwen's penalty is the only score for St. Louis (9-11-4) in the last two matches. Minnesota defeat St. Louis 3-0 earlier in the season and is 5-1-0 in the series between the two. MLS is on a break Sunday through Aug. 8 for Leagues Cup matches.

Billy Donovan lands extension with Bulls after Knicks' interest in coaching search

The Knicks' coaching search might've helped another candidate land an extension. Billy Donovan, whom the Knicks requested to interview after firing Tom Thibodeau before the Bulls rejected it, signed a multi-year extension to remain in Chicago, ESPN reported Sunday. The terms of the deal weren't immediately known, and negotiations initially started during last season, the outlet added. Billy Donovan reacts from the sideline during the Bulls' April 16 game. Getty Images But it'll allow Donovan to remain with the Bulls into the future after spending five seasons with the Thunder and then getting hired by Chicago for the 2020-21 campaign. He has collected a 195-205 record with the Bulls, and he helped them make the postseason during his second campaign before falling short in each of the last three years. In 2024-25, Chicago went 39-43 but lost in the play-tournament to the Heat. Billy Donovan talks with Coby White during the Bulls' March 13 game. Getty Images The Knicks made their request to interview Donovan early in their coaching search following their shocking decision to fire Thibodeau, but similar to their requests for the Mavericks' Jason Kidd, the Rockets' Ime Udoka, the Timberwolves' Chris Finch and the Hawks' Quin Snyder, they weren't allowed to move forward with him. Udoka secured a multi-year extension that made him one of the NBA's highest-paid coaches, while NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks are expected to extend Kidd before the start of next season. The Knicks ended up hiring Mike Brown, the former Kings, Cavaliers and Lakers coach who will now be tasked with ensuring that a coaching change doesn't result in a step back from a run to the Eastern Conference finals.
