OWSSB forms panel to prepare silk city sewerage system project report

Berhampur: A sewerage scheme for Berhampur is finally moving forward as the Odisha Water Supply and Sewerage Board (OWSSB) has constituted a seven-member technical committee to prepare a detailed project report (DPR).
The committee, headed by project director Biswabandhu Panigrahi, will evaluate technical specifications, review proposals and assess tender and cost estimations for the comprehensive sewerage system. However, no specific timeline has been set for the DPR's completion.
A DPR prepared in 2017 by a Bengaluru-based consultancy firm, estimated at Rs 587 crore, proposed laying 300-km of sewerage pipeline and treating 54 million litres of greywater daily.
However, the project failed to take off.
"The new technical committee will prepare a revised DPR considering the increased greywater generation due to urban expansion," said Berhampur MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy. He emphasised that the modern system would include recycling greywater for irrigation and other purposes after treatment.
Berhampur MLA K Anil Kumar welcomed the development, stating a sewerage system was among his top priorities after being elected.
He had previously urged the housing and urban development minister to implement a comprehensive sewerage system for the silk city.
Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) now processes waste water through a faecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP). The new system aims to address the growing concern of water body pollution caused by untreated greywater from households.
The project is expected to significantly improve the city's sanitation infrastructure and environmental conditions, benefiting its growing population.
