Do not ‘sacrifice our loved ones': Hostage families set sail in protest of new Gaza occupation plan

The flotilla departed from Ashkelon's port around 11 AM on Tuesday morning, and is expected to conclude the sailing around 2 PM the same day.
In a powerful demonstration, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum sailed as close as possible to the Gaza shore today, demanding immediate government action to secure the release of the 50 remaining hostages held by Hamas for 22 months.
The families issued a direct plea to their loved ones in captivity and a stern warning to the Israeli government, urging them not to "sacrifice our 50 loved ones on the altar of war."
The flotilla departed from Ashkelon's port around 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning and concluded the sailing around 2 p.m. the same day.
The boats were covered in yellow flags, symbolic of the fight to bring the hostages back to Israel, as well as signs of the missing. Family members called for their loved ones through megaphones from Gaza's seaside.
At the closest point to Gaza's maritime border, the families' cries were heard: "Time is running out for the hostages". They referenced recent images, stating, "We have seen that they are skin and bones, we have witnessed a holocaust in living color - and we will not stand by.'
The forum's spokesperson emphasized the urgency, demanding a "comprehensive deal now that will bring them home.'
The families stated their intention was for the hostages themselves to hear their message of unwavering support. "We are fighting with all our strength and will not give up until they return," they called out.
'The nightmare affects 50 families directly, but also impacts all of Israel'
The forum highlighted the profound impact of the ongoing captivity, noting that the "nightmare affects 50 families directly, but also impacts all of Israel.' They stressed that Israel must not "lose our moral compass and values," and called on the public to "stand with us en masse.'
In their final message, the forum declared that finding a way forward must be the "top priority" to "return all 50 hostages immediately and end the war.'
This demonstration is not an isolated event, with families of the captives willing to explore every possible option in the hopes that the hostages might hear them.
On January 11, 2024, relatives of hostages gathered at Kibbutz Nirim, near the Gaza border, and used powerful loudspeakers to broadcast messages to their loved ones. This protest was part of a series of events as the hostages approached their 100th day in captivity.
The following summer, on August 28 of the same year, the Hostages Families Forum organized a convoy of vehicles from Tel Aviv to the Gaza border to call for a hostage deal. The families used giant speakers mounted on a crane near the border fence to call out to the captives. Some demonstrators also breached the border fence and ran into Gaza before returning at the request of security forces.
Now, nearly a year later, families have taken to a new method to call for the release of the hostages.

Israeli hostages will only be freed ‘when Hamas is confronted and destroyed' in Gaza, Trump says

President Trump backed Israel's expansion of the war in Gaza, saying that the remaining 50 hostages can only be freed if Hamas is completely eradicated. 'We will only see the return of the remaining hostages when Hamas is confronted and destroyed!!!' Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday. 'The sooner this takes place, the better the chances of success will be.' The president's remarks suggests he approves of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to invade Gaza City to clear out Hamas' terrorists and pressure the group into agreeing to a cease-fire deal. Trump also suggested that the US could be directly involved in the conflict beyond serving as mediators at the negotiating table. 'Remember, I was the one who negotiated and got hundreds of hostages freed and released into Israel (and America!),' the president claimed. Advertisement 'I was the one who ended 6 wars, in just 6 months. I was the one who OBLITERATED Iran's Nuclear facilities,' he added. 'Play to WIN, or don't play at all!' Israeli officials greenlit a plan last week for the IDF to fully occupy Gaza City, where Hamas is believed to be housing some of its remaining battalions among the refugee population. 4 Thirty-nine hostages were freed under Trump, with the president vowing to free the remaining 50, only 20 of whom are believed to still be alive. Anadolu via Getty Images Advertisement The plan has been criticized by the international community and the IDF's own chief of staff, who warned that an escalation in the war would only put the remaining hostages and troops in danger. Netanyahu, however, has maintained that military might is the only way to secure the 50 hostages — only 20 of whom are believed to still be alive. Israeli-American hostages Itay Chen, 19, and Omer Neutra, 22, are among the dead still in the Palestinian enclave. 4 A nation-wide strike began in Israel on Sunday as thousands took to the streets to demand an end to the war. Getty Images Advertisement As Israel prepares to occupy Gaza City, mediators in Egypt and Qatar are working around the clock to try and secure a cease-fire deal to end the war, which has gone on for more than 21-months following the Oct. 7, 2023 terror attack in Israel. Hamas has reportedly agreed to cede control of the Gaza Strip, but has repeatedly rejected calls for the group to disarm unless Palestinians are granted statehood. Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the condition, with Israel vowing to keep the war going until Hamas is eradicated and Gaza no longer stands as a threat to the Jewish state.

U.S. envoy: Israel must 'comply' after Lebanon's 'first step' to disarm Hezbollah

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Special Envoy Thomas Barrack said Monday that it is now Israel's turn to comply with the cease-fire agreement reached last November to end the war with Hezbollah, now that Lebanon has taken "the first step" toward disarming the Iran-backed militant group. Barrack, who met with Lebanon's top officials in Beirut, hailed the cabinet for endorsing earlier this month the objectives of a U.S.-proposed plan to disarm Hezbollah and for tasking the Army with preparing a plan to enforce a state monopoly on weapons by the end of the year. "This is a Lebanese decision that requires Israel's cooperation," he said after meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the Presidential Palace. He added, "There's always a step-by-step approach, but I think the Lebanese government has done their part; they've taken the first step... Now what we need is Israel to comply with that equal handshake." Asked whether Israel is then expected to stop its violations and pullout from occupied parts of south Lebanon, Barrack said this was "the next step," noting the need for Israel's "participation" and for an economic plan "for prosperity, restoration and renovation of everybody." "You can't just take something and not give anything," he said. Israel refused to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon in accordance with the U.S.- and French-brokered cease-fire agreement of Nov. 27, retaining five strategic positions and continuing to strike suspected Hezbollah sites, resulting in the deaths of additional operatives and civilians. Despite the Lebanese Army taking control of most Hezbollah positions and facilities, pushing the group away from the Israeli border, and preventing any military presence south of the Litani River, Israel continued to insist on Hezbollah's complete disarmament. Hezbollah, significantly weakened during the 14-month war and reportedly having lost the bulk of its military capabilities, refrained from retaliating against Israel's continued attacks but refused to yield to pressure to fully disarm, insisting it would not do so as long as Israel violates the cease-fire accord. Barrack clarified that there has been "no American proposal to Israel and they have not negated anything," explaining that Washington has been discussing first with Lebanon to know its position and was in the process of holding the same discussions with Israel now. He tried to assure Lebanon's Shiite community, saying Hezbollah was part of the Shiite population who "have to see what is in store for them; what's the option and what's a better alternative than the alternative they have." He expressed optimism "to see progress on all sides" in the next few weeks, saying it would mean "a better life for the people" and "at least the beginning of a roadway to a different kind of dialogue" in the region. Lebanon's decision to set a timeline for Hezbollah disarmament was mainly motivated by the risk of another devastating war with Israel and of losing well-needed funds to rebuild its war-devastated regions. President Aoun told Barrack that "the other parties" would need to adhere "to the contents" of the plan agreed upon with Washington; secure greater support for the Lebanese Army and accelerate the internationally backed efforts to launch the reconstruction process in the war-ravaged areas. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who also met the U.S. envoy, emphasized the need for the U.S. to assume its responsibility in pressuring Israel to halt its hostile actions, withdraw from the five occupied points, and release Lebanese detainees captured during the war. Salam stressed the importance of renewing the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon at the end of this month, highlighting its role in reinforcing stability and assisting the Lebanese Army in extending state authority in the south. He, moreover, called for a clear international commitment to convening a conference to support reconstruction and economic recovery in Lebanon, which the World Bank has estimated at $11 billion, while Lebanese officials put it at more than $14 billion. House Speaker Nabih Berri, Hezbollah's main ally who negotiated the November 2024 cease-fire accord on its behalf, asked Barrack about Israel's commitment to the agreement and withdrawal from south Lebanon, saying: "This is the gateway to stability in Lebanon and an opportunity to begin the reconstruction process in preparation for the return of residents to their towns." The Hezbollah-Israel war, which killed and wounded more than 21,500 people, displaced over 1.2 million people, damaged or destroyed nearly 64,000 buildings and disrupted education for hundreds of thousands of students, according to a U.N. report. Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity running for Governor

(WHTM) – Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity (R) has officially entered the 2026 race for Governor. Garrity took to X on Monday morning to announce her campaign for Pennsylvania Governor with a video highlighting her career in the military and as Treasurer, while also attacking Governor Josh Shapiro. 'Over the coming months, I hope to get to know you and your family better and share all my ideas on how we can make Pennsylvania better. Bring more jobs here, so more adults have more opportunities to stay here. And how we can bring integrity and honesty back to the Governor's office,' she said in the video. The twice-elected State Treasurer previously announced on July 9 that she would make a decision on whether to run for governor 'very soon.' Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now If elected, Garrity would be Pennsylvania's first female governor and the first governor with military experience since Governor Tom Corbett (2005-11). A native of Athens, Bradford County, Garrity served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Colonel and is the former Vice President of Global Tungsten and Powders Corp. in Bradford County. Garrity entered the world of politics in 2020 with a run for Treasurer in which she narrowly defeated incumbent Treasurer Joe Torsella (D) by less than 1%. Her upset victory as a political newcomer came the same year Josh Shapiro (D) won the Attorney General's race by more than four points. In her first term as Treasurer, Garrity prioritized the Treasury's unclaimed property system, ensuring residents receive their money, military awards, or personal effects that reside in the state vault. She also supported the Money Match Program, which allowed the state's unclaimed property system to automatically return unclaimed money, up to $500, to residents. The Treasury says millions of dollars have been returned to residents in the program's first year. Garrity also banned TikTok on Treasury devices in 2022, saying, 'TikTok presents a clear danger due to its collection of personal data and its close connection to the communist Chinese government.' Garrity's work has garnered bipartisan support and drew praise from Governor Josh Shapiro during her swearing-in ceremony earlier this year. Shapiro said Garrity's re-election was a 'testament to the work she's done over the past four years that he people of Pennsylvania have put their trust in her once more.' 'Through our private conversations and our work together, I've seen just how hard she works,' Shapiro added. 'The miles that she puts in, the hours that she works every day. She is mission-driven.' Last November, Garrity broke Shapiro's record for the most votes received by a state official in Pennsylvania in her re-election campaign. She called for unity in Harrisburg, saying after her swearing in, 'We must put aside disagreements and find common ground.' Following her re-election, Garrity's Treasury Department announced new investments in Israeli bonds. Garrity had previously moved to divest millions of dollars in Russian assets after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Garrity faced controversy after speaking at a January 5, 2021, rally in Harrisburg, telling the crowd to 'question the integrity' of the presidential election. The day after, the U.S. Capitol was attacked by many who questioned the election results. Garrity later condemned the violence at the Capitol following the attack. Garrity's fundraising team says she's also supported the efforts of DOGE, saying in April with an email titled 'We were doing Doge in PA before it was cool' and the line 'Everyone's talking about DOGE—but Stacy Garrity's been on it from day one.' Garrity has also called for Pennsylvania to be a leader in energy production and has prioritized fiscal responsibility in state spending. The Democratic Governors' Association reacted Monday to Garrity's announcement, saying she is 'as extreme as they come.' 'Whether it's Stacy Garrity or another flawed and extreme candidate who emerges to challenge Governor Shapiro, Republicans' eventual nominee has an uphill battle to take on the Governor's strong record of working across party lines to cut costs, invest in public safety, fund public education, and deliver for all Pennsylvanians.' DGA spokesperson Izzi Levy Congressman Dan Meuser had publicly considered a run for governor, but announced in early July he would not seek the state's highest office despite an endorsement from President Donald Trump. State Senator Doug Mastriano, who was the Republican Party's nominee for governor in 2022, has also said he believes he can win another gubernatorial primary. Perennial candidate John Ventre previously announced a run for governor on the Republican ticket. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
