The Arizona Diamondbacks have been destroyed by injuries this season. These injuries have seemingly kept the team from competing at the highest level during the first half of the season.
Pair that with the fact that the National League West is loaded with talent, and the Diamondbacks seemingly have no chance to make any sort of postseason push.
Because of this, the team is expected to be very aggressive sellers ahead of the trade deadline. But what will they hunt in return?
USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently reported the Diamondbacks would be hunting more pitchers on the trade market because of all the injuries to their pitchers this year.

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 04: A view of a Arizona Diamondbacks baseball cap in the dugout during the game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on April 04, 2025 in Washington, DC."The Diamondbacks, who lost starters Corbin Burnes and Jordan Montgomery, along with co-closers Martinez and A.J. Puk, to Tommy John surgery, are telling teams they want pitching in return for the players they move at the deadline," Nightengale wrote. "Their only starters under control for next season are Brandon Pfaadt, Ryne Nelson and Eduardo Rodriguez. The Diamondbacks will have $70 million coming off the books with their free-agent departures."
With the Diamondbacks expected to cut ties with so many players, including Eugenio Suárez, Josh Naylor, Zac Gallen, and Merrill Kelly, they shouldn't have any issue in acquiring young pitching.
The Diamondbacks could target Cam Schlitter in a potential Suárez trade with the New York Yankees. They could target Hunter Dobbins or Richard Fitts in a potential trade with the Boston Red Sox. The possibilities are endless for Arizona if it's going to sell as aggressively as everybody seems to think.
Either way, the Diamondbacks need to add more pitching. Their farm system has the talent, but adding more top-end arms that are near big league ready could help this team turn it around in the next two years.

Mariners, Diamondbacks May Swing Another Trade After Josh Naylor Deal

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Arizona Diamondbacks came into the trade season with the expectation that they would be among the biggest sellers in baseball. Going into Thursday, there had only been a handful of trades made this year. Beyond the Rafael Devers blockbuster, none of these trades involved any game-changing players. On Thursday, the Diamondbacks changed that. Arizona traded first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for prospects Ashton Izzi and Brandyn Garcia. Both prospects were ranked in the top 20 of Seattle's system, per MLB Pipeline. This trade works for both sides. The Diamondbacks are able to add some pitching prospects to their system, which is a spot in the farm that Arizona still needs to upgrade. The Mariners are able to land the first baseman they need for their lineup. First base has been a weak spot for months now, and Naylor's presence adds a new wrinkle alongside Cal Raleigh in Seattle. But this isn't the last time these two sides will likely talk trades this season. In fact, they could swing another trade in the next few days. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 23: Christian Walker #8 of the Houston Astros talks to former teammate Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks while on third base during the game at Chase Field on July... PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 23: Christian Walker #8 of the Houston Astros talks to former teammate Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks while on third base during the game at Chase Field on July 23, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. MoreSlugger Eugenio Suárez has been closely linked to the Mariners this season. Seattle is expected to be one of the more aggressive teams in his trade sweepstakes. While the Diamondbacks could have traded the two pieces (Naylor and Suárez) at the same time to the Mariners, it makes sense to hold onto Suárez so that a bidding war can ensue. Now, the Mariners can continue to hunt Suárez in a trade, but other teams will have their fair chance to land him, too. It's a very smart move from the Diamondbacks, and it shows their front office isn't rushing anything. Don't be surprised if these two sides are linked again in the coming days. With the trade deadline around a week away, Seattle and Arizona will likely remain in trade talks until Suárez comes off the board. Mariners acquire Josh Naylor from Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks acquired lefthander Brandyn Garcia, who has two appearances for the Mariners this season, and minor-league lefty Ashton Izzi. The Mariners currently have a 54-48 record, which is good for second place in the AL West. They are in the second wild-card position. Advertisement The Diamondbacks — who have a disappointing 50-53 record — are expected to continue dealing players ahead of next week's trade deadline. Third baseman Eugenio Suarez and pitchers Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen are among the players with expiring contracts who could be on the move. Naylor was an All-Star last season with a career-high 31 homers and 108 RBIs for the Guardians.

Mariners acquire slugging first baseman Josh Naylor from Diamondbacks: Source

The Seattle Mariners have acquired Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks, a league source told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. In exchange, Seattle will part with No. 11-ranked prospect Brandyn Garcia and right-hander Ashton Izzi, who ranked No. 19 on Keith Law's Top 25 prospects list. The Mariners have acquired 1B Josh Naylor from the Diamondbacks, source tells @TheAthletic. — Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 25, 2025 Naylor ranked No. 17 on The Athletic's trade deadline big board. A left-handed-hitting first baseman, Naylor entered play on Thursday with .292/.360/.447 slash line, with 11 homers and 59 RBI, good enough for a 124 OPS+. His contributions have been worth 1.0 bWAR. The Cleveland Guardians traded Naylor to Arizona in December ahead of his final year before free agency. In exchange, the Diamondbacks sent pitcher Slade Cecconi and the No. 70 draft pick to Cleveland. Naylor was coming off a season in which he socked a career-high 31 homers and was named to his first All-Star team. This year, however, he has more resembled his 2023 version, with a healthier batting average and on-base percentage, an impressively low strikeout rate and a more modest home run total. Advertisement Still, with the Diamondbacks on the periphery of contention and with ace Corbin Burnes on the shelf because of elbow surgery, a rental like Naylor was an obvious trade candidate. Naylor turned 28 in June, so though the free-agent market isn't always kind to first basemen these days, he should be young enough to command a solid, multiyear contract.
