'There isn't a definitive version' - the changing face of Irish America

"There is no such thing as one, definitive, version of Irish America."
This phrase, or a variation of it, comes up time and time again when speaking to people who broadly fit under the umbrella of being 'Irish-American'.
Some come from the Republic of Ireland, some from Northern Ireland, others have families who emigrated more than 150 years ago, some have been in the United States for less than 12 months.
They all say the vision of Irish America that is still common in the popular imagination - of corner bars in Boston, Cork-accented cops in Chicago, the Kennedys, Catholicism, work on the railroads - is just one part of a patchwork of identities across the US.
Josh Taggart from Ballymoney in County Antrim is one of the newer generation, although he follows in the footsteps of the Ulster-Scots emigrants who provided so many early US presidents.
Studying for a masters degree at Georgetown University and interning on Capitol Hill at a major Congressional committee, the 28-year-old was drawn to the US by the familiar lure of better opportunities.
'My girlfriend and I were doing this cost/benefit analysis, looking at the state of the UK and public services, cost of childcare, cost of housing, salaries,' he says.
'If I did the same job I was doing in London but I did it in Washington DC where would I be five years from now?
"She's a nurse and it's just night and day with the salaries. That kind of made the decision for us.'
But he feels unlike previous generations who perhaps felt they had no choice to leave a weaker economy behind, he made a more proactive decision.
'Part of what made it so easy is that our generation is a global generation, we're not afraid of jumping on a flight or living in another country for a couple of years and that is the way we've grown up,' he says.
Roisin Comerford is also a first-generation immigrant and spent time in Portland, Oregon, before putting down roots in Washington DC.
She is the chairperson of Irish Network DC, one of a number of affiliated groups across the US which provide cultural and social networking opportunities for their members, whether they are Irish or just have an interest in Irish culture.
She says a lot of Irish in DC are drawn to the universities or work in international relations, healthcare and politics.
'It is too difficult to sum Irish America up as one group - you could probably divide it into three or four," she says.
'I know a lot of people my age who moved over here for opportunities, who are happy to live here and have a life here and they have one view of Ireland.
'Then there are people who moved in the 80s and they would have a different view of it and then there are more old school Irish-Americans who have another view, people whose parents or grandparents emigrated from Ireland.
'They are generally very proud to be Irish and very interested in Irish culture.'
In the 2020 census 38.6m people in the US claimed full or partial Irish ancestry - 11.6% of the population.
But levels of immigration have fallen as the US has strengthened entry requirements at the same time that the Republic of Ireland's economy has dramatically improved and Northern Ireland's society has become more peaceful following the end of the Troubles.
The 1930 US census recorded 923,600 residents who were born on the island of Ireland.
By the turn of the century that had fallen to 169,600.
There was a time when Irish immigration was not universally seen as a positive thing, with job adverts routinely stating 'Irish need not apply'.
Roisin says she feels privileged to be an Irish immigrant in a country that today feels very welcoming to people of her background.
It is a sentiment shared by Kevin Tobin, who moved to the US from County Tipperary 14 years ago.
He ended up in Baltimore in Maryland - a city with a long-standing Irish community - where he is chairman of Baltimore GAA club.
On a chilly Saturday morning where the misty weather is a visible reminder of home, he organises two dozen players as they play hurling and football in an urban park.
'The Irish accent would travel very well in America, it's a very welcome thing. People are very fond of it and it certainly doesn't do you any harm when, for example, you turn up for a job interview,' the father-of-two says.
'We're not necessarily protective of Irishness, we don't need to defend it, it defends itself.
'Therefore your version of Irishness and my version of Irishness, whether they're different or not doesn't really matter.
'People are very proud to be Irish but we don't have to act a particular way or spend time with a particular person or eat a particular type of food to be Irish.
"It's not necessarily an identity on an ID card, it's a way of life, a way of carrying yourself, a way of being warm and being welcoming.
'There is no one definitive Irish America.'
Of the 80 or so members at the club, a handful were born in Ireland, about a third consider themselves Irish-American and the rest simply fancied giving Gaelic games a try.
One of the handful is Ciarán Quinn from Belfast, who is taking part in the session wearing his Antrim county jersey.
'We moved here and we didn't know a single person, but GAA is a community,' he says.
'Having that community and people who can help you with jobs, help you with whatever, it has been very helpful and great to meet the locals because lots of them play too.'
Joyce Eierman on the other hand has Irish roots which go back much further than just a few years.
Three sets of her great-grandparents moved to the US in the mid-19th Century and she is part of Baltimore's historic Irish community.
Four generations of her family worked on the railroads, including her son who is an engineer.
She is secretary of the Friendly Daughters of St Patrick Maryland - the only surviving Friendly Daughters group in the US.
It is a social and charitable organisation for women of Irish heritage, and Joyce stresses that it is open to those of all religions and none.
'The men were breadwinners for a long time in the Irish community but the women held everything together and we carry that forward because we want to help others, that is the most important thing about what we do," she says.
'Having fun is good and we want to use that to raise money for those in need, especially women and children.
'For the most part the people I know from the Irish community they learned from their grandparents and their own parents, and it is our job to pass that pride in our heritage on to that generation."

Shopping centers and malls are diversifying and getting creative to maintain high foot traffic. The days of legacy tenants such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Filene's Basement, Modell's and Party City are long gone. Instead, experiential businesses have taken their place, according to a report by CoStar News. While experiential businesses have often been associated with nail and hair salons and restaurants, the type of retailers now occupying U.S. shopping centers has diversified to cover any operation that requires an in-person visit. CoStar reports those businesses now include pet groomers and doggy day care spaces, golf simulator clubs and even an IV drip center, all of which ply their trade alongside fast food and grocery stores like Jersey Mike's, Panda Express and Whole Foods. The growing trend in experiential retail centers around wellness, healthcare, fitness, recreational sports, pets, and kids. According to Forbes, at the start of the year, CoStar data showed successful retail centers were able to pivot to embrace new shopping trends. This meant smaller store sizes, experiential retail, and stores that catered to their geographic location, using data to inform site selection. 'There's a shift to smaller in general – smaller formats, shorter leases, more agile environments,' Melissa Gonzalez, principal at MG2, told Forbes. 'What is the point of the store? It's not about inventory now, especially as consumers are getting more and more comfortable shopping online. We're reevaluating the point of the store and how much of it needs to be about inventory per square foot versus experience per square foot." Fitness brands such as Lululemon (NASDAQ:LULU) now include fitness classes and wellness areas in their stores, Forbes reports. Outdoor shoe brand Sorel's Williamsburg, Brooklyn pop store offered customers an augmented reality experience in which they interacted with different weather conditions. E-commerce shuttered conventional stores, and vacant spaces were filled with stores that fostered the new reality of the American consumer after the traumatizing effects of the pandemic — a greater focus on health and wellness and a place to get the pets homeowners had acquired during lockdown treated and then looked after when hybrid work conditions were imposed, CoStar reports. Equally, ethnic-style food markets, typified by H Mart, have emerged, catering to customers with a sense of culinary adventure who wish to branch out from the usual dishes they prepare at home. 'Coming out of COVID, the breadth and depth of — we don't even call them retailers anymore, it's really users — has expanded tremendously,' Doug Healey, Macerich (NYSE:MAC) senior executive vice president of leasing, said on a recent earnings call. But you're also looking at digitally native and emerging brands, international brands, food and beverage, restaurant, medical, entertainment, electric vehicles, fitness, home furnishings, groceries. So the uses that we have to choose from are really unprecedented today.'At the recent International Council of Shopping Centers conference in Las Vegas, a session called 'The Next Big Retail Categories' discussed emerging sectors in retail, all of which had an experiential element. These included second-hand thrift-like stores, capitalizing on the appeal of vintage apparel, especially to teens. 'Medtail' stores focusing on wellness and medical providers, exemplified by chains such as Restore Hyper Wellness, which offers drips delivering hydration, electrolytes, nutrients, and more. Spas such as Freeze & Float in Chicago offer customers the opportunity to experience hot and cold therapy treatments. 'Healthcare providers are seeking retail locations to improve patient accessibility, with location/ proximity being the second most important factor for patients choosing a provider,' commercial real estate brokerage Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE:JLL) said in a recent report on medtail. 'There's a growing trend in wellness and preventative care services, especially in affluent areas, with concepts like IV drip clinics expanding into retail locations.' Unpacking rumor that Trump is sending out $5K stimulus checks

According to a rumor that spread online in late May and early June 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump would be sending out $5,000 "stimulus" checks to Americans after his administration uncovered billions of dollars in "wasted money." The viral rumor likely stems from an investment firm CEO's proposal to send some taxpayers so-called "DOGE Dividend" checks. The original proposal for $5,000 checks was based on the assumption that DOGE would achieve $2 trillion in total savings, which is highly unlikely. Trump has previously floated the idea of a "DOGE Dividend," but there was no proof at the time of this writing that he would send $5,000 checks to Americans. Snopes reached out to the White House for clarity but has not received a response. In late May and early June 2025, a rumor on TikTok (archived) claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump was reportedly sending out $5,000 "stimulus" checks to Americans after his administration uncovered $50 billion in "wasted money." The initiative, spearheaded by tech billionaire Elon Musk before his departure, works to slash government spending through layoffs and cuts to various federal programs. Though Trump has previously floated the idea of a "DOGE Dividend," there was no proof at the time of this writing that he would send $5,000 checks to Americans. Snopes reached out to the White House to ask if the president has any plans to send such checks and is awaiting a response. Since we were not able to definitively prove or disprove this rumor, we have not put a rating on this claim. The viral rumor likely stems from a proposal to send some taxpayers "DOGE Dividend" checks. Trump previously said he would consider such a plan, but his administration has not confirmed that it's sending any checks. The idea for DOGE Dividend checks was originally proposed by James Fishback, the founder and CEO of the investment firm Azoria Partners, in an X post (archived) shared on Feb. 18, 2025: Fishback's post also included a more in-depth proposal based on the assumption that DOGE would achieve $2 trillion in total savings. He suggested that the federal government take 20% of DOGE's presumed savings, or about $400 billion, and return it to approximately 79 million taxpaying households in the form of $5,000 tax refund checks called the DOGE Dividend. Under Fishback's plan, the government would send checks only to "households that will be net payers of federal income tax," meaning those that pay more money in taxes than they get back in tax credits or refunds. That means American households that do not owe federal income tax would not qualify for the proposed payments. In 2025, an estimated 40% of U.S. households will pay no federal individual income tax, according to the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. Most of these households have lower incomes, with about 70% earning less than $75,000 and about 45% earning less than $40,000, the Tax Policy Center estimates. On the same day that Fishback shared his proposal for the $5,000 checks, Musk replied (archived), "Will check with the president." Trump quickly acknowledged the idea as he delivered remarks during a Saudi investors conference in Miami on Feb. 19, 2025. "There's even under consideration a new concept where we give 20% of the DOGE savings to American citizens and 20% goes to paying down debt, because the numbers are incredible, Elon," Trump said at the conference. A reporter also asked Trump about the plan as he flew back to Washington, D.C., aboard Air Force One that day. He said: I love it. A 20% dividend, so to speak, for the money that we're saving by going after the waste and fraud and abuse and all the other things that are happening, I think it's a great idea. The dividend checks would also give taxpayers "an incentive … to go out and report things to use when we can save money," Trump added. Several weeks later, Fishback spoke further about his proposal during a March 2025 podcast appearance. He said if DOGE didn't hit the $2 trillion in projected savings, the amount of money in the dividend checks should be adjusted. "This plan is not predestined to the $5,000 number. If the savings come in above or below that, the check will be reflected accordingly," Fishback said. "So again, if the savings are $1 trillion — which I think is awfully low — the check goes from $5,000 to $2,500." At a town hall in Wisconsin on March 30, 2025, Musk fielded questions about the proposal, ultimately putting the responsibility of approving tax refund checks on Congress and Trump. "It's somewhat up to the Congress and maybe the president … as to whether specific checks are cut," Musk said in response. A search of did not return any results for legislation proposing "DOGE Dividend" tax refund checks. Snopes also could not find any record of Trump sharing additional details about a plan for such checks since February 2025, and we are still awaiting a response from the White House. It's still unclear how much money DOGE might ultimately save. Musk said in October 2024 that he expected to cut "at least $2 trillion" but he later lowered that estimate to $1 trillion. However, both of those estimates were "wildly unrealistic," PolitiFact reported in June 2025. As of June 6, 2025, DOGE's online "wall of receipts" touted an estimated $180 billion in cuts, but analyses by PolitiFact (here and here) and The New York Times found that the online ledger was riddled with errors. How Much the Average Homeowner Has in Savings vs. the Average Renter

Housing is the largest expense for the average American consumer. The more people have to spend on housing, the less money they have available to invest, save, or spend in other categories. But does owning your home instead of renting affect how much you have in your savings account? And is it the best financial decision for you right now? Check Out: Try This: The Federal Reserve's most recent Survey of Consumer Finances suggests the answer is yes. Here's how the average renter's savings compares to those of the average homeowner. The Survey of Consumer Finances data goes back to 1989, and since then, homeowners have always had more in savings than renters, on average. However, the gap between homeowners' and renters' savings has been growing. For example, in 1995, on average, homeowners had around twice as much saved as renters. Now, homeowners have five times more in savings than the average renter. Up Next: The most recent national data estimates that the average renter had $16,930 in savings. That includes all money in savings, checking, emergency funds and money market accounts. Though rent amounts will vary greatly depending on your location and size of your space, the current national average rent in the United States ranges from about $1,625 to $2,100 per month, which is a 1.1% increase compared to last year. By comparison, the average homeowner had $85,430 in savings, which is nearly $70,000 more than the average renter. That's a big difference when it comes to what you're able to allocate for emergency savings and retirement accounts. However, buying a home is not an option for the average savings, as the national average house price in the U.S. for Q1 2025 is $503,800, whereas the median sales price in the same period was $416,900, Perhaps counterintuitively, renting is often less expensive than owning a home. In the largest 50 metropolitan areas in the U.S., the median cost of renting is currently $1,398. This figure has been trending modestly downward since the second half of 2022, and represents the middle ground, with half of rents being higher and half lower, so it is quite subject to fluctuations. The median home price is currently $416,900, and the average mortgage rate is 6.97%, per the Fed. With a 20% down payment and a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, your monthly mortgage payment likely ranges from $2,167 to $2,715, excluding taxes and insurance. High interest rates are likely driving most of the higher costs of homeownership. If mortgage rates go down as expected, monthly mortgage payments will decrease. However, despite the higher costs, homeowners still save more than renters. So why is there such a big difference between how much renters save and how much homeowners do? One explanation is that rental prices continually increase while the cost of owning a home stays relatively stable after the purchase. Say you buy a new home with a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage. Your monthly housing costs will be stable for the 30 years of the loan. After you've paid off your mortgage, you'll have to pay only taxes, insurance and maintenance. Unexpected maintenance costs, such as roof damage or broken pipes, can eat into a homeowner's savings, whereas renters don't have to pay for these costs out of pocket since they're the landlord's responsibility. However, renters do have to cover rising rental rates nearly every year. Since 2019, rent prices have increased by around 19% nationwide. Rising rent prices can take up larger and larger chunks of renters' budgets. As their housing costs increase, they have less money to put toward savings and other financial goals. By comparison, homeowners have more of their income to put into savings after paying off their mortgages. The bottom line is that if you're a renter hoping to put more in your bank account, you should try these money-saving strategies: Pay off debt with high interest rates: High-interest debt can prevent you from building your savings. Start by paying off any loans with high interest rates, like credit card debt. Live with a roommate: Splitting your housing costs with a roommate will give you extra money each month to put toward savings. Renegotiate with your landlord: When your lease is up and it's time to sign a new one, negotiate your monthly payment. If your landlord charges more than the market rate, it may be worth moving to a more affordable home. Finally, remember to put at least some of your savings into a high-yield savings account so you can grow your money. Caitlyn Moorhead contributed to the reporting for this article.
