Allocate ₹300 crore to purchase produce from tobacco farmers, CPI(M) urges Andhra Pradesh government

The Hindu3 days ago

The leaders of Communist Party of India (Marxist) have demanded that the state government allocate ₹300 crore to support tobacco farmers and purchase theIr produce through the State Trading Corporation of India Ltd. (STC), which is a government-owned international trading company, mainly for import and export operations.
The party State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao along with the members of Andhra Pradesh Farmers' Association visited Ongole-2 (Throvagunta) auction centre on Friday. He enquired about the auction management, the prices available in the market, and other issues with the farmers there. He was angry at the way the Tobacco Board and ITC were behaving with the farmers.
'The ITC company is controlling the farmers by not offering them the right price. The government should discuss with the traders and procure at least 25% of tobacco through the STC. If the government starts taking action, the companies will compete to purchase tobacco,' he said, questioning why ITC shares are rising despite the falling price of tobacco.
'As the tobacco prices were better during last year, the banks had given loans of ₹7.50 lakh per barn. This year, we have cultivated more area, but the yield was not good due to the rains, else we would have made profits. If the situation continues like this, we are at a risk of losing ₹4 lakh to ₹5 lakh per barn,' farmers Brahma Reddy, Polineni Adinarayana and others told to the CPI(M) leaders.
They further informed that the companies are buying good quality virginia tobacco at a price of ₹20,000 per quintal and they are not buying the low grade tobacco at all. The farmers are facing a loss of ₹7,500 per quintal when compared to previous year. The same quality tobacco was procured at ₹27,500 per quintal during last year.
The farmers have expressed their concern that it would be better to declare a crop holiday than to suffer these losses. They said that if the low grade tobacco was not purchased, they will not be able to recover. Auction management officer J. Tulsi discussed the procurement process and market prices with the representatives of ITC and other companies.
The auction officer said that foreign orders are likely to come in the next few weeks and low grade tobacco can be purchased very soon. The CPI(M) leaders reacted strongly to this issue and said that the promises have been made by every Minister, but none of them have been implemented till date.

25 bps Or 50 bps? RBI To Cut Repo Rate Again On June 6; MPC Meeting This Week, Know Expectations

Last Updated: The RBI MPC will meet from June 4-6 to decide on interest rates. Economists expect a 25-bps cut in the repo rate to 5.75%, while SBI predicts a 50-bps cut. The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee (RBI MPC) is set to meet for three days from June 4 to June 6, amid global uncertainties, to decide on interest rates in India. According to most economists, the central bank's rate-setting panel is expected to go for a 25-basis-point cut in the repo rate to 5.75%. However, SBI in its latest report expects a 50-bps reduction. The Reserve Bank of India has reduced the repo rate by 50 basis points in the previous two monetary policy reviews to 6%. It cut 25 bps each in February and April reviews. Expecting a 25-bps cut, Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda, said, 'We do believe that given the rather benign inflation conditions and the liquidity situation which has been made very comfortable through various measures of the RBI, the MPC would go in for a 25 bps cut in the repo rate on the (June) 6th." The commentary on both growth and inflation will be important as there are expectations of revisions in their forecasts for both the parameters, he added. Echoing similar expectations, Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ICRA, said, 'With the vegetable index dipping further, and compressing the food inflation the headline CPI inflation eased further to a 69-month-low of 3.16 per cent in April 2025… A 25-bps rate cut appears forthcoming in the June 2025 policy, followed by easing of 25 bps each in the August and October 2025 policy reviews." The CPI inflation is expected to average 3.5 per cent in FY2026, with the prints for Q2 and Q3 sharply trailing the MPC's projections for these quarters, allowing for an additional 75 bps of rate cuts in this calendar year, she said. A basis point is equal to a 100th of a percentage point. India's CPI inflation in April 2025, the latest available data, fell to 3.16 per cent, which is the lowest since July 2019. It is well within the RBI's target level of 4% (+/- 2%). Sankar Chakraborti, MD & CEO of Acuité Ratings & Research, also expects a 25 bps interest rate cut saying that the latest nominal GDP growth data indicates that inflation is range-bound. 'The nominal GDP growth of 9.8% against a real growth of 6.5% implies a GDP deflator of around 3.3%, meaning our inflation is range-bound. This growth number, with the current background of low inflation, creates some monetary space. We continue to expect the RBI to deliver two more 25 bps rate cuts this year, in June and August," said Chakraborti. India's real GDP grew by 7.4% in the fourth quarter of FY25, compared to 8.4% in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. In full FY25, real GDP grew 6.5%, while nominal GDP rose 9.8%. However, State Bank of India expects a 50 bps repo rate cut on Friday, June 6. In its latest report, SBI said, 'We expect a 50-basis point rate cut in June'25 policy as a large rate cut could reinvigorate a credit cycle." It also said a large rate cut could help revive the credit cycle, with the total rate cut over the easing cycle possibly going up to 100 bps. The report highlighted that the current liquidity condition in the banking system is in extended surplus mode. Due to this, liabilities are getting repriced faster in the ongoing rate-easing cycle. 'Banks have already brought down interest rates on savings accounts to a floor rate of 2.70 per cent," according to the SBI report. The report also pointed out other positive developments such as the Indian Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast of an above-normal monsoon, strong arrival of crops, and falling crude oil prices. These factors have led SBI to revise its CPI inflation estimate for FY26 to around 3.5 per cent with a downward bias. First Published: June 02, 2025, 12:11 IST

D-St lures FIIS back with big ticket block trades

Foreign investors are starting to head back into Indian stocks after a major exodus, attracted by $5.5 billion worth of big ticket block trades in May and lifting hopes of a revival in the nation's equities market. The block trades were well bought by overseas investors, according to bankers. They marked the highest monthly total in almost a year and a huge jump from only $220 million in April. "We actually saw interest coming in from a fairly diverse set of investors who were missing in action in the last six months," said Abhinav Bharti, head of JPMorgan's India equity capital market business. "They had gone out of India, said India is just too expensive, we don't want to buy anything right now. I think we could start seeing them coming back." Block trades often precede a recovery in IPOs and May's robust offerings come amid a strong performance for Indian stocks. Live Events The Nifty 50 index has climbed risen 6% since early April when U.S. President Donald Trump announced his sweeping tariffs which were then paused for 90 days, with India emerging as an investor safe haven due to better-than-feared duties. Foreigners have since bought about $3 billion worth of Indian stocks in April and May combined, data shows. That comes after they pulled nearly $29 billion out of Indian stocks between October and March which followed record highs for the country's benchmark indices in September. Gary Tan, a portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments in Singapore, said the recent inflows into India reflect a resurgence of interest in emerging market equities. "We've selectively added to India on pullbacks but remain underweight," said Tan, citing high valuation in some sectors. Banking, telecommunications and diversified conglomerates were his most favoured sectors, he added. The $5.5 billion in block trades in May, according to LSEG data, included the sale of a British American Tobacco $1.51 billion stake in ITC, according to a term sheet seen by Reuters showed. IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal also offloaded a 5.7% stake in the low-cost carrier through a block deal worth about $1.36 billion, while Singtel sold $1.5 billion of Bharti Airtel shares . Both the ITC and IndiGo trades were increased in size after strong demand from investors, bankers said. It was the busiest May on record for block trades in the country, the data showed. "We're seeing high-quality global long-only accounts coming in with conviction," said Sunil Khaitan, a managing director at Goldman Sachs in India. "Some are still waiting for levels to normalize, but 90% to 95% of the foreign liquidity coming back into the market is from deeply embedded India investors, those who understand the market and have been waiting for the right window to reengage." Citigroup's head of India ECM Arvind Vashistha said the country's better economic performance, tax cuts and interest rate reductions had helped sentiment towards India's equity markets improve. "The economy is in good shape, valuations have become more reasonable, which is encouraging healthy market activity. Investors are telling us that these are the companies we find interesting and if there's a supplier, we'd love to buy it," he said.
