Tourism set to drive HCM City's economy in new development phase

HCM CITY: HCM City is accelerating the rollout of strategies, master plans, and policies through 2030 to reinforce tourism's position as a core economic pillar in the city's new development phase following recent administrative boundary changes.
The new configuration offers both opportunities and challenges, but city leaders say tourism is well placed to seize the moment.
Tran Van Tuan, vice chairman of the municipal People's Council, said tourism has consistently affirmed its role and delivered significant results, contributing material and cultural value to both residents and visitors.
The city's Department of Tourism acts as the sector's 'conductor' — linking tourism enterprises, advising the city's leadership, and coordinating policies to boost growth, he said.
The city has focused on enhancing policies to develop diverse tourism products, including cultural-historical, culinary, shopping, ecological-agricultural, waterway, MICE, and medical tourism.
'We have introduced mechanisms and incentives to encourage both residents and businesses to work together in driving tourism development,' he said.
Statistics show strong growth momentum. In July alone, the city's tourism revenue hit VNĐ22.4 trillion (US$985 million), up 45.6 per cent year-on-year, bringing the total for the first seven months of 2025 to VNĐ140.3 trillion, up 29.9 per cent and reaching 54 per cent of the year's target.
International arrivals in July stood at 695,930, up 75.3 per cent, for a cumulative seven-month figure of nearly 4.6 million, up 48 per cent.
Recent product development has centred on short-haul linkages, particularly for day-trippers, connecting the city centre to destinations such as Ho Tram, Long Hai, Bình Chau, and Con Dao, as well as craft villages, fruit orchards, and riverside eco-sites in Binh Duong.
Despite the strong outlook, Tuấn acknowledged that expansion brings new challenges, notably integrated management and planning over a wider geographical area with different terrain, infrastructure, and local customs.
Disparities in service quality and workforce standards between localities also need to be addressed, alongside the requirement to restructure products, target markets, branding, and transport links with Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
Nguyen Thi Anh Hoa, director of the city's Department of Tourism, said proposals would be submitted to the municipal People's Council to attract MICE groups, offer interest rate subsidies for tourism projects, and draw in strategic investors.
In addition to existing programmes, themed routes are under development – such as industrial and craft village tours in Binh Duong, spiritual and leisure itineraries in Ba Ria–Vung Tau, and medical tourism combining HCM City's high-quality hospitals with coastal resorts, she said.
'By creating short, varied journeys, we can broaden our customer base and enhance the appeal of premium short tours,' she said.
With around 681 tourism resources and its status as the country's leading economic and cultural hub, the city has the capacity to serve a broad spectrum of tourism segments – from leisure and nature exploration to culture, gastronomy, and shopping.
The city can host conferences and exhibitions, then channel visitors to nearby seaside or ecological destinations for post-event leisure.
Nguyen Thi Khanh, chairwoman of the HCM City Tourism Association, said the expanded boundaries open up possibilities for unique products leveraging coastal resources, cultural-historical sites, craft villages, and golf courses in former Ba Ria–Vung Tau and Binh Duong.
'Ba Ria-Vung Tau's integration with HCM City creates favourable conditions for extending visitor stays, developing MICE and cruise tourism, and capitalising on deep-water port infrastructure,' she said.
Vo Anh Tai, deputy general director of Saigontourist Group, called for a focus on high-end tourism products, along with investments in road and maritime transport linking the city to neighbouring provinces and Long Thanh International Airport.
He also urged priority for developing an international cruise port and greater support for inbound operators attending promotional events and trade fairs.
Experts recommend a comprehensive master plan that aligns tourism development with transport projects such as the Ben Luc–Long Thanh Expressway and Ring Road No 3, which would ease pressure on National Highway No 51.
The sector is also urged to expand products, diversify markets, strengthen domestic and international business linkages, promote digital transformation in management, and develop a smart, green tourism ecosystem.
This would balance growth with environmental protection, cultural preservation, and resource regeneration.
A critical part of the city's long-term tourism strategy will be building a high-quality workforce.
Hoa said the sector needs a master plan for human resources, potentially commissioning training from specialised tourism schools and fostering links between institutions to meet international standards.
Such investments would enable the city to leverage its advantages more effectively, contributing to economic restructuring, job creation, and higher living standards for its residents.
In this new development phase, city officials and industry leaders see tourism not only as a source of economic growth but also as a powerful connector – linking communities, showcasing culture, and shaping the city's image as a dynamic, welcoming destination on the global stage. — Vietnam News/ANN

Singapore's office leasing activity surged 12-fold in the first six months of the year, topping the Asia-Pacific region, while Hong Kong leasing remained subdued amid a stubborn supply glut, according to a report by Colliers. Tenants relocating to newly completed premium spaces drove the spike in demand in Singapore, the report said. The city state, widely deemed Southeast Asia's top finance hub, also saw rents improve by 1.3 per cent to S$12.10 (US$9.42) per square foot per month as of the second quarter, according to a separate report by CBRE. 'Singapore's office demand was spurred by companies attracted to its macroeconomic stability, geopolitical neutrality and suitability as a regional business hub,' said Mike Davis, managing director for occupier services at Colliers Asia-Pacific. 'There was also a spate of relocations due to a flight to quality.' With the supply of high-end office space in Singapore's central business district set to remain tight in the next two years, Davis said growth in prime office rents was likely to accelerate. Overall, leasing activity across 11 key markets tracked by Colliers in Asia-Pacific rose 9.6 per cent to 4.5 million square metres (48.4 million sq ft) in the first half from a year earlier, the report said. Besides Singapore, the Philippines and Japan also supported the regional growth, with leasing demand growing by 56 per cent and 55 per cent, respectively, the consultancy said. In absolute terms, India, mainland China and Japan accounted for more than 90 per cent of total office demand, pushing the region's leasing volumes higher, it added. 'Across Asia-Pacific, we're witnessing a pivotal shift in how occupiers engage with office space,' said Davis. 'The resurgence in demand – led by dynamic markets like Singapore, the Philippines and Japan – signals not just recovery but reinvention. 'As flexibility and sustainability priorities take centre stage, organisations are gravitating towards prime grade A assets that reflect their values and future ambitions. This flight to quality is reshaping the region's office landscape, and we expect this momentum to build through the second half of 2025 and beyond.' Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan recorded 'relatively subdued' demand, the report said, while not providing specific figures. Hong Kong prime office rents were projected to decline by 10 per cent this year as vacancy rates climbed to about 19 per cent 'with limited appetite for expansion', Colliers said. As of the first half, 17.3 per cent of the city's office space was empty. 'This ongoing imbalance will prompt landlords to enhance the competitiveness of their rental offerings,' the report said. Average office rents in Hong Kong were estimated at US$73.90 per square metre per month, about a third lower than the average office rents in Singapore at US$97 per square metre per month, the report said.

(EPA Images pic) FRANKFURT : The trade deal between the US and the EU is close to the baseline assumed by the European Central Bank (ECB), but uncertainty persists in key sectors like pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, ECB president Christine Lagarde said today. The EU accepted 15% tariffs on most items in the deal agreed last month, averting an all-out trade war and providing businesses greater clarity, even if the new barriers slow economic growth. 'The trade deal establishes an effective average tariff estimated to lie between 12% and 16% for US imports of euro area goods,' Lagarde said in Geneva. 'This effective average tariff is somewhat higher than – but still close to – the assumptions used in our baseline projections last June,' she said. 'The outcome of the trade deal is well below the severe scenario for US tariffs of over 20%,' she added. The ECB's baseline projection assumes economic growth of 1.1% next year while the 'severe' outcome would have lowered this to 0.7%, the ECB's June projections show. 'The US-EU trade deal is still likely to weigh on economic growth,' Lagarde added, saying a long-predicted slowdown was already evident in second-quarter economic data. 'The EU, which has always relied on extensive foreign trade for growth, should now diversify its trade with other nations to maintain growth and offset the negative impact of tariffs,' Lagarde said. 'While the US is – and will remain – an important trading partner, Europe should also aim to deepen its trade ties with other jurisdictions, leveraging the strengths of its export-oriented economy,' she said.

Historic Swedish church inches closer to new home

KIRUNA: A historic red wooden church considered one of Sweden's most beautiful buildings resumed its slow move across the Arctic town of Kiruna today, inching toward its new home to allow Europe's biggest underground mine to expand. Kiruna's entire town centre is being relocated because of the giant LKAB iron ore mine that dominates the region, whose ever deeper burrowing over the years has weakened the ground, increasing the risk of collapse in some parts. Kiruna Kyrka, an imposing 672-tonne Swedish Lutheran church from 1912, is being moved five kilometres (three miles) on remote-controlled flatbed trailers, moving at a snail's pace of half a kilometre an hour to the new Kiruna town. The complex and costly logistical operation began on Tuesday and was scheduled to be completed today. The journey has so far gone smoothly for the 1,200-tonne convoy, but was expected to proceed more slowly today due to some tricky narrow passages and 90 degree turns, officials said. The move has generated widespread interest, with large crowds thronging the streets of the town of 18,000 people and Swedish television broadcasting the entire journey live. King Carl XVI Gustaf was due to take part in festivities in Kiruna, including an attempt to break the world record for the number of people attending a "kyrkkaffe", a church coffee break. The town's relocation process began almost two decades ago and is expected to continue for years to come. The new town centre was officially inaugurated in September 2022. The relocation of the church alone is expected to cost US$52 million (RM220 million) and is being paid for by LKAB. Designed by Swedish architect Gustaf Wickman, the church, which measures 40 metres (131 feet) tall, is a mix of influences and includes designs inspired by the region's Indigenous Sami people on the pews. The neo-Gothic exterior features slanting roofs and windows on each side, while its dark interior has elements of national romanticism as well as an Art Nouveau altarpiece and an organ with more than 2,000 pipes. The church's handblown glass windows were removed ahead of the move, replaced with plywood painted to look like windows. The belltower, which stood separately next to the church, will be moved next week. - AFP
