Bogong moths appear to use stars to navigate 600-mile journey, a first for insects
The moths emerge from their larval stage with the tools to make this journey, but no one knows how the 1-inch-long moths navigate their way to the caves.
Scientists previously found that the moths could sense Earth's magnetic field with an internal compass. And now, they say they've cracked the rest of the mystery. In a study published in the scientific journal Nature on Wednesday, researchers found the bogong moths use the starry sky as a guide to the caves.
'The big thing that we've discovered here is a very, very tiny animal like a moth, with a very small nervous system, a very small brain, very small eyes is able to interpret the starry night sky and work out a direction to fly in,' said Eric Warrant, a professor of zoology at Lund University in Sweden, who is an author of the new research.
Several bird species, in addition to humans, have demonstrated they can use the stars to navigate great distances. And while dung beetles use the light of stars to travel a few dozen feet, no insect had been documented using stellar navigation to travel.
'The bogong moth, as far as we know, is the first one that has been described to navigate using the stars,' said Andrea Adden, a postdoctoral researcher who studies at The Francis Crick Institute in London and contributed to the research.
The researchers discovered the moths' stellar navigation ability by capturing wild bogong moths and then suspending the animals on a thin tungsten rod inside in a small, barrel-shaped 'flight simulator.'
With their backs glued to the rod, the animals could flap their wings inside the simulator and turn as if they were flying naturally.
'It can rotate freely,' said David Dreyer, a Lund University researcher who is another author of the study. 'It can choose any direction it wants to fly to.'
The researchers created a magnetic vacuum to disable the creatures' internal magnetic compass and focus on its other senses.
At the top of the flight simulator, researchers projected an image of the night sky, which could be adjusted as they pleased.
During testing, the researchers adjusted the rotation of the sky and found that the moths shifted their flying patterns to compensate and set a new heading. But when the researchers projected a randomized, broken-up sky pattern into the flight simulator, the animals got lost.
'The animals were totally disoriented,' Dreyer said. 'That was, for us, like the final proof, more or less, that they actually indeed use the stars for navigation.'
In separate experiments, the researchers cut a tiny window into the moths' brains, inserted a glass tube inside a neuron and measured electrical impulses as the star projection was displayed. The researchers found that electrical impulses spiked when specific angles of the sky were shown. The animals did not react strongly when the researchers projected a randomized sky pattern.
Warrant said bogong moth eyes have small pupils and they are likely only capable of seeing a handful of the brightest stars in the sky. The researchers suspect the animals might use the Milky Way to navigate.
'They probably see the Milky Way much more distinctly and brightly than we do,' Warrant said.
Warrant said the moths likely use their sense of smell on their final approach to the alpine caves.
'They detect a compound most likely that's coming out of the cave — an odor compound which acts as a kind of an olfactory beacon that guides them into the cave,' he said, adding that the smell is similar to that of rotting meat.
The moths, which live for about a year, spend a dormant summer in the caves and then return home to where they emerged.
Ken Lohmann, a professor in the biology department at the University of North Carolina who was not involved in the research, said it was convincing work and that the experiments were thoughtful and well controlled.
'One of the things that is really remarkable about it is just the way the moths appear to be able to maintain this heading over a long period of time and over tremendous distances using a relatively small brain,' said Lohmann, who studies animal navigation. 'It just highlights the ingenuity of natural selection.'
Bogong moths are endangered and were added to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's 'red list' in 2021. The authors said the new findings could help stem the decline of the species.
'The moth population has been decreasing dramatically in numbers over recent years, especially with the drought and the bushfires that Australia had in 2020,' Adden said. 'Knowing that they use vision as one part of the sensory arsenal that they use to guide their navigation may inform protection approaches with respect to light pollution, for example, when the moths get trapped in cities, for example.'

The black spots are the result of atmospheric cloud vortices, but are oddly pronounced and significantly contorted compared to most other examples of this phenomenon. The spinning voids are trailing off Heard Island — an uninhabited Australian territory in the southern Indian Ocean, around 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) north of Antarctica. The cloud-obscured landmass has a surface area of around 142 square miles (368 square kilometers). On average, the dark spots are around 8 miles (13 km) wide, decreasing slightly in size the further they have traveled, according to NASA's Earth Observatory. They are initially moving away from the island in a northeasterly direction (left to right). The spinning holes are the result of a phenomenon known as von Kármán vortices, which occur when a prevailing wind encounters a landmass, disturbing the airflow and creating "a double row of vortices which alternate their direction of rotation," according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They are named for Theodore von Kármán, a Hungarian-American physicist, who was the first to describe this natural phenomenon. In this case, the vortices are being created by Mawson Peak, a 9,000-foot-tall (2,700 meters) active volcano sat at the heart of Heard Island. But in this case, the vortex stream appears to bend almost 90 degrees midway through the stream. This change in direction was most likely caused by a sporadic burst of the intense westerly winds that frequently blow across the area around Heard Island at speeds over 50 mph (80km/h), known as the "Furious Fifties," according to the Earth Observatory. In most examples of von Kármán vortices, the resulting cloud trails can be quite wispy, tracing out the subtle variations in the invisible air currents, such as examples observed over Mexico's Guadalupe Island in 2012 and above Svalbard's Bear Island in 2023. Deep in a cave on an island off Australia's remote Pilbara, a venomous arachnid has quietly evolved over millions of years to attack and kill prey in the dark. The creatures are a type of pseudoscorpion that was previously unknown to science and have only been found in one place on Barrow Island. Samples of the tiny animals were first collected 35 years ago and then placed in a vault at the Western Australian Museum, but they were not officially described until this month. Like all pseudoscorpions, they superficially resemble scorpions, but they lack an elongated tail with a stinger, and instead attack using venom glands in their long, pincer-like fingers. Dr Mark Harvey co-authored a description of this new species, Anatemnus capillatus, in the Australian Journal of Taxonomy. No one has ever seen it alive in its natural environment, but clues to its behaviour can be found by studying similar species. 'All pseudoscorpions are predators… They walk around sensing their environment with specialised hairs, and as soon as they find prey, they'll grip it and inject venom into it so it quickly dies. Then they'll suck all the fluids out of it, which is the standard way arachnids feed,' Harvey told Yahoo News Australia. A Scientist Says He's Solved the Bermuda Triangle, Just Like That
Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: An Australian scientist says probabilities are the leading cause of the Bermuda Triangle disappearances. And he's not the only one. Add in suspect weather, and iffy plane and boat piloting, and Karl Kruszelnicki believes there's no reason to believe in the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon. While the conspiracy of the Bermuda Triangle has existed for decades, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association and Lloyd's of London has long championed the same ideas. Pick any one of the more than 50 ships or 20 planes that have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle in the last century. Each one has a story without an ending, leading to a litany of conspiracy theories about the disappearances in the area, marked roughly by Florida, Bermuda, and the Greater Antilles. Australian scientist Karl Kruszelnicki doesn't subscribe to the Bermuda Triangle's supernatural reputation. Neither does the United States' own National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). Both have been saying for years that there's really no Bermuda Triangle mystery. In fact, the loss and disappearance of ships and planes is a mere fact of probabilities. 'There is no evidence that mysterious disappearances occur with any greater frequency in the Bermuda Triangle than in any other large, well-traveled area of the ocean,' NOAA wrote in 2010. And since 2017, Kruszelnicki has been saying the same thing. He told The Independent that the transparent volume of traffic—in a tricky area to navigate, no less—shows 'the number [of ships and planes] that go missing in the Bermuda Triangle is the same as anywhere in the world on a percentage basis.' He says that both Lloyd's of London and the U.S. Coast Guard support that idea. In fact, as The Independent notes, Lloyd's of London has had this same theory since the 1970s. NOAA says environmental considerations can explain away most of the Bermuda Triangle disappearances, highlighting the Gulf Stream's tendency towards violent changes in weather, the number of islands in the Caribbean Sea offering a complicated navigation adventure, and evidence that suggests the Bermuda Triangle may cause a magnetic compass to point to true north instead of magnetic north, causing for confusion in wayfinding. 'The U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard contend that there are no supernatural explanations for disasters at sea,' NOAA says. 'Their experience suggests that the combined forces of nature and human fallibility outdo even the most incredulous science fiction.' Kruszelnicki has routinely garnered public attention for espousing these very thoughts on the Bermuda Triangle, first in 2017 and then again in 2022 before resurfacing once more in 2023. Throughout it all, he's stuck to the same idea: the numbers don't lie. Even with some high-profile disappearances—such as Flight 19, a group of five U.S. Navy TBM Avenger torpedo bombers lost in 1945—pushing the theory into popular culture, Kruszelnicki points out that every instance contains a degree of poor weather or likely human error (or both, as in the case of Flight 19) as the true culprit. But culture clings to Bermuda Triangle conspiracy theories. The concepts of sea monsters, aliens, and even the entirety of Atlantis dropping to the ocean floor—those are fodder for books, television, and movies. It sure does sound more exciting than poor weather and mathematical probabilities, anyway, even if the 'boring' story holds more water.
