Promote libraries as catalyst for national progress
SUNGAI PETANI: Libraries must be given greater prominence and highlighted as a catalyst for national progress, including in the economy, politics, society, education and culture.
Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said libraries, as repositories of knowledge, play a very significant role in the development of a nation.
'Currently, there are 1,076 village libraries providing services to all Malaysians from Perlis to Sabah,' he said after launching the 2025 Let's Read Together for 10 Minutes programme and distribution of Semarak Membaca 2025 book vouchers, held in conjunction with World Book and Copyright Day, here today.
According to him, out of all the village libraries, 506 are under the management of the National Library of Malaysia (PNM), while the remaining 570 are under state jurisdictions.
'This does not include university libraries, state public libraries, libraries in government agencies, as well as school resource centres, which total 13,674,' he said.
Aaron said the culture of reading should be turned into a lifestyle as it is the first step towards all forms of progress and encourages a more progressive and mature mindset among the people.
He added that a country's progress and the advancement of its civilisation can flourish if its people are of a high intellectual calibre, nurtured through the practice of reading.
'In line with this goal, the Ministry of National Unity, through PNM, has implemented a total of 48,686 reading promotion programmes in 2024.
'As part of the ongoing effort to promote the reading culture among the people, the MADANI government, through the Ministry of National Unity, has organised the 'Let's Read for 10 Minutes' programme and the Semarak Membaca 2025 book vouchers in conjunction with World Book and Copyright Day,' he said.
He said the programme has the potential to rekindle interest in reading, in line with the MADANI government's vision to build a knowledgeable society.

Govt under fire from opposition, allies over telco data handover demand
THE Malaysian government is facing mounting criticism over an alleged directive requiring all telecommunications companies (telcos) to hand over comprehensive mobile user data, including call records, internet usage, and GPS location history. MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has voiced serious concern over the move, warning that it poses a significant threat to citizens' privacy and could lead to the misuse of personal information. He rejected the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) claim that the data had been 'de-identified,' arguing that metadata, such as GPS coordinates, call logs, and IP addresses, could still be easily traced back to individuals, especially when cross-referenced with other digital sources. He believed MCMC is trying to downplay the issue by saying, :Don't worry, the data has been de-identified and contains no personal details that can identify individuals.' 'But I want to ask, de-identified, really? Don't try to fool us. If you're collecting data on who we call, when we call, how long we talk, our IP address, and our GPS coordinates, the exact latitude and longitude, time and day, anyone with access to this data can easily match it back to our identities. Especially now, with e-wallets, CCTV, Touch 'n Go, and banking records, it's incredibly easy to pinpoint someone's identity,' he said in a video posted to Facebook on Saturday. From the opposition, Pejuang raised similar concerns. Pejuang information chief, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, criticised the move as unjustified and questioned the true motive behind collecting such intrusive data. 'What exactly does MCMC intend to do with this data? Their excuse is to promote local tourism? But what is the real motive?' he said. 'Not only is this a privacy issue, but there is also the risk of this data being misused or leaked to other parties,' Rafique added. 'MCMC should stop trying to cover up a huge scandal with a tiny sieve,' he said via Facebook on Sunday. Both Pejuang and MCA, despite being on opposing sides of the political spectrum, are united in calling for greater transparency and accountability from the government on this issue. Higher education ministry monitoring Harvard's foreign student ban
KUALA LUMPUR: The Higher Education Ministry is closely monitoring the recent decision by the United States to revoke Harvard University's certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). According to the ministry, the move by the US Department of Homeland Security on May 22 follows the current administration's actions to prevent Harvard from enrolling new international students. It added that this restriction also puts pressure on existing international students at Harvard to transfer to other institutions to maintain their visa status. The issue is being closely observed through the Education Malaysia office in Washington DC (EMWDC), which is currently monitoring 54 Malaysian students at Harvard — 16 of whom are sponsored, and 38 self-funded. "A recent development, in which the US Federal Court upheld a temporary restraining order filed by Harvard University, offers relief to more than 6,800 international students at the institution," the ministry said in a statement. "This decision allows international students, including Malaysians, to continue their studies without disruptions to their current visa status." The ministry and EMWDC are also liaising with student sponsors and relevant US education authorities. It also welcomed the commitment shown by stakeholders to ensure the welfare of Malaysian students is safeguarded. "In line with the Malaysia Madani concept, the ministry will continue to support Malaysians studying abroad under any circumstances." It was reported recently that a US federal judge temporarily blocked the government's plan to bar international students from enrolling at Harvard University. The temporary injunction, issued by Judge Allison D. Burroughs, prevents the US government from stopping Harvard from continuing to accept international students under its federal programme. Harvard had filed a lawsuit against the federal government in the Massachusetts District Court just hours before the ruling, alleging that the administration of President Donald Trump was unlawfully retaliating against the university. Meanwhile, the ministry also reminded students to regularly update their Optional Practical Training information and to be cautious in all immigration-related matters. Currently, there are no reports of Malaysian students facing issues related to their Student and Exchange Visitor Information System records or visa revocations. "New students scheduled to begin their studies at Harvard this September are advised to contact the university and their respective sponsors directly to get the latest updates before making any further decisions. "Malaysia believes that cross-border higher education is vital for global talent development, knowledge exchange, and strategic international collaboration.
