Former Brazil star's son, 19, who was left 'brain dead' after lorry crash on his way to first training session returns home to his family three months on from horror accident
In March, Pedro Severino, 19, was in the front passenger seat when the vehicle he was travelling in collided with a lorry on a motorway in Brazil.
The crash happened at 5.21am on Monday March 4, after which Severino was taken to hospital with a critical head injury.
He underwent neurosurgery at 10.50am, in a procedure that was successful however a doctor declared him 'brain dead' later that evening.
Now, three months on from the incident, his parents - including former footballer Lucas Severino, who played for Brazilian sides Botafogo and Athletico Paranaense - confirmed that the 19-year-old had finally returned home.
Taking to Instagram to announce the news, they wrote: 'Is there any doubt that there is God? Pedro is proof that he exists! Believe In God! Besides performing miracles, he puts people like angels, to help and encourage us!
Severino played for the Red Bull Bragantino U20 team and was driving to a training session
Everyone who prayed, everyone who fasted, everyone who made promises, everyone who met with God, everyone who cried, everyone who believed, everyone without exception of the hospital @unimedribeiraopreto who tirelessly didn't give up, even when the diagnosis was not favorable, thank you very much! You all saved Peter and our entire family!
'You were sent by God to protect us and renew our faith every day! Thank you, thank you! Now moving on to the next step! Rehab at home!'
In the same post, the family shared images of Pedro back in his family home and smiling alongside his father, mother, brother and sister.
One image showed showed Pedro with his father and brother out on the basketball court.
Lucas played for Brazil with the likes of Ronaldinho and Lucio at the 2000 Summer Olympics, but never received a full cap at international level.
Another footballer, Pedro Castro, 18, was in the back seat of the vehicle and was also taken to hospital as a result.
The teenagers were on their way to their club's training centre in Atibaia, north of Sao Paulo, when the crash happened.
Castro was discharged with minor injuries a few hours after arriving at the hospital in Americana, Brazil.
Both drivers involved in the accident were breathalysed but were not found to be under the influence of alcohol.
The footballers were returning from Ribeirao Preto, where they had been seeing family members.
Severino played for the Red Bull Bragantino U20 team and was driving to his first training session with the club, who compete in the Brazilian Serie A.
A statement from the Dr Waldemar Tebaldi Municipal Hospital said: 'For brain death to be confirmed, the patient must undergo a clinical exam by two different doctors, with at least an hour between their assessments, as well as an apnoea test and other supplementary exams.
'This process could take up to 24 hours after the protocol was started at 4:30pm. The hospital team is providing full support to the family during this difficult time.'

Revealed: Neymar's son's heartfelt message after his father was left in floods of tears after suffering his heaviest career defeat
Neymar and his son shared a sweet moment on social media after the Brazilian star suffered his worst-ever career defeat. The icon was left in floods of tears on Sunday night after Santos lost 6-0 to Vasco da Gama. Neymar returned to his boyhood club earlier this year after a nightmare 18-month spell at Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal where he was riddled by injuries. He has had a mixed impact back in his homeland, scoring six goals and adding three assists in 19 games, but Santos are 15th in the Brazilian top flight and just two points clear of the relegation zone. What they didn't need, then, was a 6-0 hammering, which saw Neymar overcome with emotion at full-time, wiping away tears with his shirt and being consoled by a member of staff. His son, Davi Lucca, wrote on social media: 'Good evening, Dad. I know today has been a difficult day for you and for us, but I wanted you to know that in these difficult moments, and when no one is by your side, know that I will always be there for you. 'You are more than a great father, you are an idol, you are my inspiration, and even when you cry, I want you to know that I love you very much. 'Always keep that in mind. Now, I want you to hold your head high and reach out to them as you always have and will. You are incredible. I love you with all my heart.' Few players have ever seen such a public outpouring of love from one of their family members after a defeat, and Neymar was equally sentimental with his reply. 'I love you, my little one. Dad will get back on his feet,' he replied. Neymar has never known such a defeat and to rub salt into the wound, fellow Brazilian and former Liverpool favourite Coutinho scored twice for the opposing team. The previous heaviest loss of Neymar's career came back in September 2015 when Barcelona were beaten 4-1 by Celta Vigo in LaLiga. Following his emotional outburst, Neymar was extremely strong in his assessment of Santos' performance while he explained why he was crying. 'I'm ashamed,' Neymar said. 'I'm totally disappointed with our performance. Neymar left the pitch in tears after 6-0 defeat against Vasco de Gama. Neymar's biggest loss in his football career. — Ney (@Neycromancer) August 17, 2025 'The fans have every right to protest, obviously without using violence... but if they want to curse and insult, they're in their right. 'It's a feeling of extreme shame. I've never experienced this in my life. Unfortunately, it happened. 'The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can't help in every way. Anyway, it was total s***, that's the reality.' In the immediate aftermath, Santos sacked their head coach Cleber Xavier as they attempt to rescue their dire season. During Sunday's game, Coutinho's brace was supplemented by goals from Lucas Piton, David Correa De Fonseca, Rayan and Danilo Neves. Coutinho recently rejoined Vasco, who are his boyhood club, on a permanent deal after a successful loan spell last season as he looks to get his career back on track. Meanwhile, Neymar, who is Brazil's all-time record goalscorer, initially came back to Santos on a short-term deal in January, with the forward expressing his aim to retain top form ahead of the 2026 World Cup. He subsequently extended his contract until the end of the year in June, with the option for a further six months. At the time, club president Marcelo Teixeira claimed Neymar's return to his boyhood club had resulted in significant commercial benefits for the club alongside record-breaking social media growth. He added: 'Our idol, our boy, the prince with our number 10 shirt, remains.' Elsewhere, speaking back in January on his romantic return to Santos, Neymar had expressed his delight at the move. '(I've been) wishing for this moment to come true for a long time,' he said. 'We're helping each other, Santos are helping me, they've opened doors for me to rediscover soccer, to rediscover joy,' he said. 'I didn't want to sign a long contract because I didn't know how I was going to come back. 'I didn't know how I was going to feel during these months. Let's enjoy these moments, it's the start of a great era for Santos.' Then, after he extended his contract in June, Neymar added: 'I made a decision and I listened to my heart. Santos is not just my team, it is my home, my roots, my history and my life. 'Here I was a boy who became a man, and I am truly loved. Here I can be myself, truly happy. And it is here that I want to fulfil the dreams that are missing in my career. 'And nothing will stop me. I go, I come back and I stay. Where it all began and where it will never end.' Santos are now just two points clear of Vasco - and the relegation zone - following the heavy defeat and are next in action on Sunday when they travel to Bahia.

Pele's old club to build stunning state-of-the-art new 30,000-seater stadium with classy nod to Brazil legend
SANTOS have unveiled plans to build a stunning new stadium that pays homage to icon Pele. The Brazilian club have played at the 16,000-seater Vila Belmiro Stadium since 1916. 6 6 6 6 6 But plans to knock down their current home and replace it with a state-of-the-art 30,000 capacity arena in the same place were approved. The three-year project will cost a reported £96million to complete. Incredible designs show that the new ground will be a multipurpose stadium capable of hosting concerts and other sports away from football. The venue is in a compact area of Sao Paulo, so the club are therefore ready to build up. Construction work will take it as high as an 18-story building. There is going to be retail and leisure space on the bottom alongside a huge car park. And the pitch will sit on the equivalent of the fourth floor. Huge hospitality areas are set to be built and VIP fans have access to a viewing platform on the highest floor. The stadium is going to be wrapped in a white carbon fibre mesh. And the exterior will have players printed on the side with legend Pele front and centre. Chris Eubank Jr flies in Neymar's £10million Batcopter over Santos' stadium as he links up with Brazilian superstar Mayor of Santos Rogerio Santos said after giving the project the green light: 'The club has taken the city's name to every corner of the world. "Today, by approving this project, we take an important step for the club and the city, which will now have a modern arena capable of hosting major games as well as major concerts and events, something we don't yet have the infrastructure to do.' Pele is Santos' greatest of all-time and when he passed away in 2022, his coffin was placed in the club's stadium for thousands of fans to come and pay their respects. The club is currently in crisis after a 6-0 defeat to Vasco da Gama on Sunday. Neymar burst into tears after the game and manager Cleber Xavier has since been sacked. 6

GB snowboarder opens up on crash that threatened to end career
GB Snowsport freestyle snowboarder Maisie Hill, 24, suffered severe, life-threatening injuries in a crash during training in Switzerland in January 2023. The incident, where she hit a wall of ice at high speed, caused a lacerated liver, punctured lung, major brain bleed, and multiple broken bones, leading doctors to suggest she might never walk again. Despite the initial prognosis, Hill made a remarkable recovery, returning to snowboarding within nine months of the crash. Her ability to resume her career was significantly aided by a grant from the Olympic Solidarity programme, which she described as life-changing. Hill is now focused on qualifying for the Milano Cortina Olympic Winter Games in February 2026, having recently achieved a fifth-place finish at an Austrian World Cup.
