Charles Barkley compares OKC Thunder to Bad Boy Pistons and 90s Bulls: "This is the best defensive team I've seen in a long time"

Only one game into the WCF, and the OKC Thunder seems to have already made a strong case for the 2024-25 NBA championship. The most well-rounded roster among all the other teams in the conference finals as of today. Their consistency at both ends of the floor is remarkable.
OKC's defense has been the talk of the town for a while now. Coach Mark Daigneault and his crew have been the No.1 team in defensive ratings, whether it was the regular season (106.6) or the ongoing playoffs (100.7) in a complete team effort from the Thunder.

Talking playoffs, OKC leads the league in steals, averaging 10.8 per game, and ranks fourth in blocks. The Thunder also holds the top position for opponent points off turnovers and fast breaks, limiting it to 10.9 and 9.1 per game, respectively, heading into Game 2.
Addressing their win against the Timberwolves, Charles Barkley was in awe of Oklahoma's defense, comparing it to the iconic Chicago Bulls-Detroit Pistons rivalry during the 1990s.
"This is the best defensive team I've seen in the NBA in a long time…They remind me of the Bad Boy Pistons and Chicago Bulls when they had Dennis Rodman and Horace Grant. When they had Michael and Scottie and Dennis, or Horace, if you were a little bit off your pass, it's going the other direction. This is the deepest team in the NBA, and they're going to win an NBA championship. I've not seen any team that can beat this team," said "Sir Charles" about the Thunder, who limited the Timberwolves to 88 points in Game 1 of the 2025 WCF.
OKC has the personnel
Coming off a second-round exit last year, GM Sam Presti managed to make two great additions in Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein over the summer. It was a move that filled the missing gaps, giving the Thunder size, defense, versatility, playmaking and championship DNA.

OKC now has twin towers in Isaiah and Chet Holmgren, with the latter making a solid case for DPOY before going down with a hip fracture. Doing a great job disrupting the opposition's offense and causing turnovers, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace impressed us with their abilities to play tenacious lockdown defense on any given night.
There needs to be a special mention of "The Carushow," who once again stepped up when his team needed him the most. The former Los Angeles Lakers champion stunned the basketball world with his defense on the seven-foot Nikola Jokic, making the three-time MVP appear helpless on the court.

Defense wins championships
There's a popular saying in sports that the Thunder might soon prove true. As Barkley pointed out, defense was a crucial ingredient in the championship runs of the Pistons and Bulls during their heyday.

While superstars do what superstars do, every team needs a Dennis or Horace to fill the gaps, which could eventually help boost a team's odds of winning it all. A perfect example is Caruso, whose play-reading instincts, anticipation, and relentless hustle often go unnoticed. His championship pedigree — having played a key role in the Lakers' 2020 Bubble title — adds even more value. With MVP-led Oklahoma City peaking at the right time, the Thunder appear primed to chase and potentially taste championship glory.

World's tallest monk? Victor Wembanyama spotted at China's Shaolin Temple with shaved head

French 7'3' NBA star Victor Wembanyama may have just unlocked a new position: Shaolin monk. Wembanyama, who ended last season early due to a rare blood clot in his right shoulder appeared to be looking for some off-season spiritual peace and strength at a Shaolin Temple in central China. A widely circulated image showed the San Antonio Spurs center with a freshly shaven head, sitting pensively in front of small Budda statues inside a room typically used by abbots to receive guests. Chinese state media reports confirmed on Monday that he was indeed at the temple. The image, which CNN is unable to trace to its original source, was reposted by multiple Chinese state media outlets and by the NBA's official account on Chinese social media. NBA said on its official Weibo page on Monday that 'according to reports' Wembanyama has shaved his head and begun a 10-day retreat in the Shaolin Temple. In a separate video on Douyin, China's version of TikTok, a bystander spotted the towering basketball player at the temple. The 1,500-year-old monastery, nestled deep in the forested mountains of central China's Henan province, is known for Zen Buddhism and the Chinese martial art of kung fu. Retreats at the temple focus on discipline, meditation and inner harmony and aim to help disconnect from real-world distractions. The 21-year-old Wembanyama – a 2024-25 NBA All-star and 2023-24 Rookie of the Year, just went through a tough season. He had been out since February following a rare deep vein thrombosis diagnosis and several weeks later the Spurs were officially eliminated from playoffs. Wembanyama seemingly wanted to stay low-key on his journey at the monastery. The Frenchman has not yet posted anything about it on social media. On Monday, the Shaolin Temple, told CNN 'We are not aware of this' when asked about Wembanyama staying there. But a state-owned outlet of Henan province, where the temple is located, reportedly learned from people at the temple that 'Wembanyama is indeed currently in the Shaolin Temple, but the relevant matters are not convenient to be disclosed to the public'. Right before the spiritual tour, the French basketballer spent a couple of fun days in Beijing. Locals spotted him shopping, playing basketball, walking in a park, and even visiting the Greal Wall, as shown in their social media footage. The San Antonio Spurs on Friday shared a video on Instagram of Wembanyama as he visited the Great Wall of China in Beijing. 'It's Victor Wembanyama. Life in China on the Great Wall itself, having an amazing time. It's crazy,' he said. The Shaolin temple often attracts well known figures. Prominent US YouTuber IShowSpeed visited to the same temple back in March, training with a kung fu master and generating millions of views on his social media accounts.

Rivals Camp Series: The five best QBs of the 2025 regionals

The regional stops of the Rivals Camp Series is in the books with the Rivals Five-Star at the Indianapolis Colts' practice facility coming up later this month. Today, we look at the best players at each position through the regional events starting with quarterback. RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker Houston showed in Dallas that he has all the traits of an elite quarterback and it's why USC has made him its top priority in the 2027 class and many others, including Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M and LSU, are staying involved. The Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian high four-star is not the biggest quarterback in the world but that's what everyone said about Kyler Murray, Bryce Young and so many others. In today's game, quarterback height is less important than ever before. Houston is a playmaker and even if a camp setting isn't the best for him, the four-star still delivered in a major way. Over the last few days, Jarrard has visited Purdue, Notre Dame and Clemson and heading into the Atlanta camp he had received offers from Georgia and Ohio State as the 2027 four-star from Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the entire country. The ball pops off Jarrard's hand. He has velocity, timing and everything else to back up all the attention he's received on the recruiting trail. The Atlanta Camp was loaded at quarterback and even though Jarrard didn't win the MVP award, he was definitely impressive and one of the best QBs at any Rivals regional camp. To beat out Teddy Jarrard, North Carolina commit Travis Burgess, Mississippi State pledge Brodie McWhorter and others for the MVP award, Johnson had a phenomenal performance at the Atlanta camp which was one of many this offseason. The 2027 four-star quarterback from Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes was sharp, showed off great arm talent, had a clean motion throughout the event and then seemed to get better and better throughout the camp. It was a close race at the top but Johnson edged out some other elite quarterbacks. The five-star quarterback was fantastic as always at the Los Angeles stop and what's even more impressive is that a camp setting is not where Lyons does his best work. The Folsom, Calif., standout sat in the pocket and zipped passes all over the field. He knows when to dial it back a little bit and has such an unreal feel for receivers and immediately having chemistry with them. Lyons is best when he can freelance a little bit, escape pressure and make magic happen and that's not a camp setting but he was still great. Oregon, BYU, Michigan and others continue after him. It's hard to believe that Wade is a 2028 prospect because he has all the tools and is physically developed enough that it wouldn't be a shock to anyone if he reclassified because he doesn't need three more high school seasons. He's now the guy at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy and he should shine because he is a special prospect who will clearly be under five-star consideration. Wade was arguably the best quarterback at the loaded Los Angeles event, which is always so deep at the position. Even still, the 2028 prospect stood out. He has the total package from decision-making to arm talent and beyond. Oregon, Texas and others have already made an impression.
