MDA SPACE AWARDED CONTRACTS FOR ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY UNCREWED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS TO ENHANCE MARITIME OPERATIONS
The award includes an acquisition contract valued at approximately $39 million for the initial procurement of two state-of-the-art Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) aircraft with options to procure four additional systems, and an in-service support contract, estimated at $27 million over an initial five-year period, to sustain operations. The in-service support contract includes provisions which enable extensions to the sustainment services for up to 20 years.
By extending the Navy's situational awareness and operational reach, the advanced technology of the RCN-ISTAR UAS will support Canada's naval missions and provide the RCN with critical expertise in uncrewed systems and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations. Initial operational ISTAR UAS capability is anticipated in 2028, with full operational capability expected in 2032.
"As a long-time trusted mission partner to Canada, MDA Space is honoured to deliver these advanced uncrewed aircraft systems to the Royal Canadian Navy and to provide our sailors with the modern systems they need to meet their operational missions," said Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space. "The ISTAR UAS project is a clear example of the advanced innovation required to support the modern operational demands of the Canadian Armed Forces, and of deep domestic Canadian industrial capabilities available to help them achieve that mission."
RCN ISTAR UAS adds to a number of capabilities that MDA Space provides in support of overall Maritime Domain Awareness. Others include Maritime Insights that provides awareness of shipping activity around the world and in critical maritime economic zones for the detection and monitoring of dark vessels. Additionally, the MDA CHORUS TM constellation includes the Vessel Detection Onboard Processor (VDOP) demonstration that will provide near real time Synthetic Aperture Radar processing onboard the satellite and transmit vessel detection events directly from the satellite, significantly reducing the time to process and disseminate satellite maritime domain earth observation information.

Halifax council orders feasibility study for $116M stadium grounds project
The Halifax Regional Municipality council has ordered a financial feasibility assessment on the redevelopment of the Wanderers Block, a swath of downtown land that houses a pop-up soccer stadium and a horse riding school, among other facilities. Councillors were presented Tuesday with three redevelopment options ranging in cost from $116 million to $122 million. The proposals include combinations of a permanent stadium, new equestrian facilities for the Halifax Lancers, and a botanical conservatory. Several councillors raised concerns about whether the multimillion-dollar price tag could be justified, especially given ongoing budget pressures. The area, which is mostly municipal land and part of the Halifax Common, is also home to a historic lawn bowling club and city parks staff. "Unless someone else is coming with cash, it's going to be really hard for us to do any of these wonderful, beautiful, city-building ideas," said Coun. Sam Austin, adding that tenants like the Halifax Wanderers and the Halifax Tides professional soccer teams are unlikely to contribute millions toward construction. "In a tenant relationship, the city carries the risk," Austin continued. "If it doesn't work out, they can walk away — and we're the ones left holding the bag." The three options presented were: An 8,000-seat stadium for soccer and rugby, plus a second riding arena for the Lancers. Estimated cost: $116.2 million. An 8,600-seat soccer-only stadium, additional space for the Lancers, and a conservatory. Estimated cost: $119.9 million. A 7,100-seat stadium with a north-south orientation, two new riding arenas, and a larger conservatory. Estimated cost: $122.6 million. Depending on the results of the feasibility assessment, council could revisit a fourth option presented Tuesday that would see a standalone stadium built in a different location. Derek Martin, president of the HFX Wanderers FC, said Wednesday he is pleased the assessment will be going ahead. "I'm looking forward to having real in-depth conversations very quickly. I spoke to city staff this morning, obviously after it was approved last night, and asked when we can meet to get started," he said in an interview, noting the team is willing to help the city and chip in. He did not say how much the team would be willing to contribute. Halifax Tides CEO Courtney Sherlock said in a statement that the current soccer facilities at the Wanderers Grounds should last for "a few more years with minor improvements being needed annually," but that "it doesn't make sense to invest in upgrades and replacement parts on a temporary stadium." Halifax stadium talks spark debate about use of public spaces 1 month ago Talks about a stadium are alive again as Halifax regional council recently unveiled some options for the Wanderers Grounds. Once again, the topic is raising many questions. Richard Woodbury has the story.

Faculty lockout begins at Dalhousie after university, union fail to reach agreement
Dalhousie University could see a lockout of nearly 1,000 faculty members starting Wednesday morning. Dalhousie University in Halifax has locked out its more than 1,000 faculty members. The lockout began at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday for members of the Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA), which represents full-time faculty, instructors, librarians and counselors. ADVERTISEMENT Dalhousie Faculty Association Members of the Dalhousie Faculty Association are pictured in Halifax on Aug. 20, 2025. (Carl Pomeroy/CTV Atlantic) DFA and Dalhousie's board of governors began negotiations for a new contract in May. The previous three-year collective agreement expired at the end of June. Conciliation talks ended in mid-July without a collective agreement. Last week, Dalhousie president Kim Brooks issued the university's final offer to the union, proposing a wage increase of two per cent per year for three years. David Westwood, president of the association, previously told CTV News Atlantic the union is looking for a seven per cent wage increase in the first year, followed by four per cent increases in the second and third years. The university, which reported a $20.6-million deficit in its 2025-2026 operating budget, previously said it had 'significant financial challenges' in meeting the association's wage increase request. 'The uncertainty created by the DFA leadership's timeline and process for responding to the offer puts the University in an impossible situation. Dalhousie does not have the financial capacity to meet the DFA bargaining team's salary demands,' Brooks said in a letter to faculty and staff earlier this week. While campus remains open during the lockout, classes taught by DFA faculty are suspended. Dalhousie Faculty Association Members of the Dalhousie Faculty Association are pictured in Halifax on Aug. 20, 2025. (Carl Pomeroy/CTV Atlantic) If the lockout extends into the fall term, students will receive further instruction about possible course suspensions. Students are still being told they should plan to arrive to campus as normal for the fall term. 'This decision has not been made lightly. The University understands this unresolved situation creates significant uncertainty for our students, faculty, and staff as we approach the fall term. With that timeline in mind, these steps are being taken to protect the integrity of our academic operations and minimize the potential disruption to our community,' the university said in a statement to CTV Atlantic. The University of King's College says if the disruption is still unresolved on Sept. 2, classes at King's open to both King's and Dalhousie students will be suspended.
