Referring to the commotion at the ninth board meeting, Parashar alleged that armed people were brought in to create chaos. "In Friday's meeting, criminals were brought from outside Patna with weapons. Bouncers and arms were brought to commit hooliganism. Such things cannot be tolerated in govt meetings. No one can scare me with guns and bouncers. This is Gandhi's country. Weapons have no place in a democratic society," he said.
Though he did not name Patna mayor Sita Sahu's son, Shishir Kumar, the commissioner said a letter had been issued barring him from PMC activities. "Many types of criminal cases are also going on against him. Therefore, his presence in all the activities of the civic body is banned," the letter read. A request for prohibitory orders against Shishir has also been sent to the Patna district magistrate.
Parashar added, "Security breaches are being addressed, and CCTV footage from the venue is being examined."
Despite the controversy, the commissioner highlighted the corporation's ongoing efforts under its 'Chakachak Patna' drive and its hope for a three-star rating in the garbage-free city category. "Patna has been invited for the award. We will know the scoring and the city's ranking on July 17," he said.
He also cited several achievements like elimination of 658 garbage-vulnerable points, launch of a 'manhole ambulance' service, real-time chatbot support and initiatives like 'Sadak Shatru' and 'Mera Shehar, Meri Jawabdehi'. Patna, he added, had ranked fourth in public feedback and previously earned one-star certification and a water plus tag.

One dead after land caves in at Pune's Nanded City
One worker died and two others were rescued after being trapped under a heap of soil during drainage excavation work in the Nanded City area on Sinhagad Road on Monday. The two others who were rescued are Chetanlal Prajapati, 32, a resident of Wadjai Mata Mandir labour shed in Vadgaon Budruk, and Khurshid Ali, 27, a resident of Indrayani Heights in Nandedgaon. Upon receiving the alert, rescue teams from the PMC fire department, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and Pune Metropolitan Disaster Response Force (PDRF) rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. Sujit Patil, a fireman with the PMRDA fire brigade, said, 'We received a distress call around 6pm. Over 30 firemen were deployed, and we managed to rescue all three workers, but unfortunately, one of them was declared dead.' Senior police inspector Atul Bhosale of Nanded City Police Station said, 'We received a report from Navale Hospital. The incident occurred around 5pm near Kalashree Building when loose soil collapsed during pipeline work. The workers were extricated around 7:30 pm.' Police and municipal authorities are investigating the incident to determine the cause of the collapse. Work at the site has been temporarily suspended.

Tree Funeral March: AAP protests irregularities in tree cutting in Pune
In a unique show of protest, the Adam Aadmi Party (AAP) organised a symbolic 'Tree Funeral March' on Monday to raise concerns about alleged illegal tree cutting and the lack of transparency in the tree permission process in Pune. The march, featuring participants carrying cut tree branches and saplings wrapped in white cloth, akin to dead bodies, began from JM Road and concluded at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) headquarters. AAP leaders and volunteers accused PMC and other authorities of turning a blind eye to rampant tree felling across the city. 'Between April 2022 and December 2023 alone, official data accessed through the RTI Act shows that permissions were granted to cut 10,502 trees and transplant 11,860 trees,' the party stated in its press release. While agencies were mandated to plant 3.4 lakh compensatory trees and deposited a total of Rs 22.5 crore for the same, AAP alleged that there is no credible or publicly accessible record to confirm whether these plantations have actually taken place. 'The Tree Authority is functioning in a non-transparent manner. Citizens are left in the dark about how decisions are made, where compensatory plantations happen, or if they survive,' said one of the party volunteers during the protest. The party has demanded an immediate halt to illegal tree cutting, a complete audit of past permissions, and the creation of a publicly monitored dashboard to track compensatory plantations.

PMC issues stern warning over water meter resistance
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), under the direction of additional commissioner Pradip Chandran, has issued a firm warning to residents obstructing its ongoing water meter installation drive. In an official order dated July 31, the PMC stated that individuals interfering with civic work would face legal action under Section 124 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (previously IPC Section 353), which pertains to using assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duty. (HT) The civic body aims to install 2.62 lakh water meters citywide to improve water management and monitor usage. While 1.85 lakh meters have been successfully installed, work on the remaining 1.77 lakh has been hampered due to resistance, particularly in core city areas such as Kasba Peth, Market Yard, Dhankawadi, Katraj, Yerawada, Sasanenagar, Mohammadwadi, and Peth localities. 'If someone interferes with the PMC's water meter installation work, their water connection will be disconnected and legal action will be initiated,' Chandran reiterated. The initiative comes amid rising concerns over unauthorised water connections, population pressure, and significant losses due to leakages. In response, the PMC has divided the city into 141 zones to conduct a detailed water audit and assess consumption patterns. Water resources minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil recently reviewed the city's water management and called for urgent repair of leakages and better monitoring systems. He underscored the need for optimal water use and supported regulation through metering. While the PMC's target is to supply 150 litres of water per citizen daily in metered areas, political opposition has grown amid fears of public backlash. In many households, daily consumption for a family of four exceeds 500 litres, raising concerns that monthly bills could rise sharply once metering is fully implemented. Several sitting MLAs and former corporators have expressed reservations, citing voter discontent.
