Meta Takes Next Steps Towards the Development of True Artificial Intelligence

Meta's looking to take the next major steps in AI development, which has become a key focus for Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, as he eyes a new era of digital interaction, where true artificial intelligence can be achieved.
Meta's latest project on this front is its V-JEPA 2 world model, which can help computer systems understand more about their environment, in order to factor such into their responses.
As explained by Meta:
'As humans, we have the ability to predict how the physical world will evolve in response to our actions or the actions of others. For example, you know that if you toss a tennis ball into the air, gravity will pull it back down. When you walk through an unfamiliar crowded area, you're making moves toward your destination, while also trying not to bump into people or obstacles along the path. We achieve this physical intuition by observing the world around us and developing an internal model of it, which we can use to predict the outcomes of hypothetical actions.'
Meta's V-JEPA 2 model helps AI agents mimic this, in order to assist in their understanding of the physical world, and therefore how they should respond to additional elements.
'We trained V-JEPA 2 using video, which helped the model learn important patterns in the physical world, including how people interact with objects, how objects move in the physical world and how objects interact with other objects. When deployed on robots in our labs, we found that robots can use V-JEPA 2 to perform tasks like reaching, picking up an object and placing an object in a new location.'
It's another step towards automated general intelligence (AGI), and computer systems that replicate the human brain, and can 'think' for themselves to some degree.
Which remains the Holy Grail of artificial intelligence research.
Right now, the current wave of generative AI tools are good at mimicking human thought, by replicating responses based on whatever data inputs they can access. But these are not actually 'intelligence,' these systems are not thinking, they're using advanced predictive models to place one letter in front of the other, based on the examples of similar inputs that they can reference.
They're smart spreadsheets, they're mimics of human behavior, but there's no actual thinking involved, these systems are not interpreting the various elements and coming up with their own, novel solutions.
Which is what Meta's looking to develop with its new 'superintelligence' project, for which it's hiring a range of industry experts for a bigger push into AGI development.
Is AGI even possible? Nobody knows, but Meta's AI chief Yann Le Cun, who's one of the most experienced and respected minds in AI development, seems to think so.
Though we're not close yet.
As LeCun told the Joint Mathematics Meetings conference in March this year:
'A lot of people in the AI research and development community are perceiving the idea that perhaps we have a shot within the next decade or so of building machines that have a blueprint that might eventually reach human level intelligence. The estimates about how long it's going to take vary by huge amounts, with the most optimistic people saying that we're already there. Some people who are raising lots of funds are claiming it's going to happen next year, but I don't believe so myself.'
LeCun says that, through open source development, and a focus on key models, we could develop a human-level AI intelligence framework 'within the next decade or half decade,' which would lead to systems that are capable of actual planning and reasoning.
But LeCun doesn't believe that the current gen AI models are the right framework to build upon in this respect.
Maybe that will be part of Meta's new project, in exploring all new ways to look at AI development, with a view to a different kind of intelligence that can assess and understand different elements.
This latest project is another step in that direction, and with Meta also upping its compute power significantly, it may well be best placed to crack the code, and build real systematic intelligence.
Imagine the Large Hadron Collider, but for AI development. That's what Meta's likely working towards with its new AI project.

Mark Zuckerberg is making a 28-year-old CEO the lynchpin of Meta's investment in the AI race. On Thursday, Meta confirmed that it's buying a 49% stake in Scale AI, giving the company a valuation of over $29 billion. The tech giant is spending about $15 billion for the stake. Scale's founder and CEO, Alexandr Wang, is joining Meta to work on the tech giant's AI efforts. Here are five key things to know about Wang. 1. He's an MIT dropout. After his freshman year, Wang dropped out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He and cofounder Lucy Guo had launched Scale AI three years before, out of famed Silicon Valley startup incubator Y Combinator. Their summer 2016 cohort included The Athletic, a sports news site now owned by The New York Times, and furniture retailer Burrow. "The great thing about Scale is that it is taking advantage of an opportunity that is hiding in plain sight," Jared Friedman, a YC partner, said on the accelerator's blog in 2016. Wang had an expansive vision for the company. "Long-term, we want to power any human-powered process for any company," he told the YC blog. 2. Wang became the youngest self-made billionaire in 2021. Three years after cofounding Scale AI, Wang was becoming the talk of Silicon Valley. Forbes compared him to fellow dropouts Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. At 24, he became the world's youngest self-made billionaire. He then briefly fell off the billionaire's list. As of June, Forbes estimates that Wang is worth $3.6 billion. "Focus on building the business and then the rest will kind of take care of itself," Wang told Business Insider in 2020. Peter Thiel's Founders Fund helped Scale reach unicorn status with a $100 million investment in 2019. In five years, Wang had grown his business to the point that he was the youngest self-made billionaire in the world. 3. Wang is a frequent visitor to DC. Like other tech CEOs, Wang has made repeated trips to Washington as Congress and the White House weigh AI policy. Prior to President Donald Trump 's 2024 win, Wang, along with just about every major tech CEO, attended then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's series of closed-door AI-focused panel discussions. Wang told lawmakers that a 2018 trip to China made it clear to him that US national security depends on AI. "The race for AI global leadership is well underway, and our nation's ability to efficiently adopt and implement AI will define the future of warfare," Wang said in written testimony that was made public. Earlier in 2023, Wang testified before a House subcommittee on military uses for AI. 4. He wrote to Trump about his AI views. A day after Trump's second inauguration, Wang outlined five ways that the president could advance AI in his first 100 days. Scale published an open letter to Trump in a full-page ad in the Washington Post on January 21. "If the United States remains on our current trajectory, we risk falling and staying behind," Wang wrote in the open letter. The CEO wrote that he wanted the US government to emulate tech giants by spending more on data and compute. He also wrote that the administration should establish an interagency task force to review regulations to ensure jobs in AI can flourish in the US. Wang attended Trump's second inauguration. "Honored to be invited to attend the Inaugural at the Capitol!," he wrote on X. "Optimism about AI and tech is palpable in DC this week." 5. He is poised to become Zuckerberg's newest AI exec On Thursday, Scale said that Wang is joining Meta to work on the company's AI efforts. He will continue to serve as a director on Scale's board. Wang is going to work on Meta's superintelligence arm. The tech giant said in a statement that it would share more information about the team soon.

Meta and energy company announce plans for geothermal plant in New Mexico
Meta and a California-based geothermal energy company announced plans on Thursday to build a geothermal power plant in Northwestern New Mexico, as Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and other officials touted a report outlining how the state has the resources to produce substantial geothermal power. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and XGS Energy aim to build a geothermal energy site capable of producing 150 megawatts at a location that has not yet been named. A recent report indicates the Santa Fe region, as well as portions of Sandoval and Tao counties, are particularly well positioned to produce geothermal energy. "We sit on, no kidding, one of the best dry hot rock energy resources not just in Western United States but in the entire world," said Josh Prueher, XGS Energy CEO, during a news conference at the state Capitol, flanked by Lujan Grisham. "The statistics are staggering." Meta in 2019 opened a sprawling data center in Los Lunas where the tech giant stores videos, photos and other media that its billions of users have posted to the social network. It is unclear whether the new geothermal power plant would support its existing footprint in New Mexico and the Southwest or a future expansion. Prueher said XGS is considering public, private and tribal lands to site the planned plant and is engaged with landowners in each of those categories. Asked whether Sandoval, Santa Fe and Taos counties might be potential locations, Prueher said they could be. The 200-page "The Future of Geothermal in New Mexico" report, published by Project InnerSpace in collaboration with New Mexico Tech and the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, notes the potential for 163 gigawatts of geothermal power to be generated in the state. The Future of Geothermal in New Mexico The vast subsurface heat present in the state could help boost the Land of Enchantment's clean energy future, advocates of the project say. "It's a big damn deal," Lujan Grisham said, praising the economic and job creation impact the project could have. Geothermal resources, typically reservoirs of hot water that exist at various temperatures, generate renewable energy from hot water sources deep beneath Earth's surface. Most of the geothermal power plants in the U.S. are in western states and Hawaii, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, where geothermal energy resources are close to the earth's surface. California generates the most electricity from geothermal energy. Lujan Grisham said the project is not receiving state money at this time. The geothermal power plant in Northwestern New Mexico would be the second in the state, with one such power plant already in operation in Hidalgo County. Meta invests in AI firm Scale and recruits its CEO for 'superintelligence' team
Meta said Thursday it is making a large investment in artificial intelligence company Scale and recruiting its CEO Alexandr Wang to join a team developing 'superintelligence' at the tech giant. The move reflects a push by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to revive AI efforts at the parent company of Facebook and Instagram as it faces tough competition from rivals such as Google and OpenAI. Meta announced what it called a 'strategic partnership and investment' with Scale late Thursday but didn't disclose the financial terms of the deal. Scale said the added investment puts its market value at over $29 billion. Scale said it will remain an independent company but the agreement will 'substantially expand Scale and Meta's commercial relationship.' Meta will hold a minority of Scale's outstanding equity. Wang, though joining Meta, will remain on Scale's board of directors. Replacing him is a new interim Scale CEO Jason Droege, who was previously the company's chief strategy officer and had past executive roles at Uber Eats and Axon. It won't be the first time a big tech company has gobbled up talent and products at innovative AI startups without formally acquiring them. Microsoft hired key staff from startup Inflection AI, including co-founder and CEO Mustafa Suleyman, who now runs Microsoft's AI division. Google pulled in the leaders of AI chatbot company while Amazon made a deal with San Francisco-based Adept that sent its CEO and key employees to the e-commerce giant. Amazon also got a license to Adept's AI systems and datasets. Wang was a 19-year-old student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he and co-founder Lucy Guo started Scale in 2016. They won influential backing that summer from the startup incubator Y Combinator, which was led at the time by Sam Altman, now the CEO of OpenAI. Wang dropped out of MIT, following a trajectory similar to that of Zuckerberg, who quit Harvard University to start Facebook more than a decade earlier. Scale's pitch was to supply the human labor needed to improve AI systems, hiring workers to draw boxes around a pedestrian or a dog in a street photo so that self-driving cars could better predict what's in front of them. General Motors and Toyota have been among Scale's customers. What Scale offered to AI developers was a more tailored version of Amazon's Mechanical Turk, which had long been a go-to service for matching freelance workers with temporary online jobs. More recently, the growing commercialization of AI large language models — the technology behind OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Meta's Llama — brought a new market for Scale's annotation teams. The company claims to service 'every leading large language model,' including from Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta and Microsoft, by helping to fine tune their training data and test their performance. It's not clear what the Meta deal will mean for Scale's other customers. Wang has also sought to build close relationships with the U.S. government, winning military contracts to supply AI tools to the Pentagon and attending President Donald Trump's inauguration. The head of Trump's science and technology office, Michael Kratsios, was an executive at Scale for the four years between Trump's first and second terms. Meta has also begun providing AI services to the federal government. Meta has taken a different approach to AI than many of its rivals, releasing its flagship Llama system for free as an open-source product that enables people to use and modify some of its key components. Meta says more than a billion people use its AI products each month, but it's also widely seen as lagging behind competitors such as OpenAI and Google in encouraging consumer use of large language models, also known as LLMs. It hasn't yet released its purportedly most advanced model, Llama 4 Behemoth, despite previewing it in April as "one of the smartest LLMs in the world and our most powerful yet.' Meta's chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, who in 2019 was a winner of computer science's top prize for his pioneering AI work, has expressed skepticism about the tech industry's current focus on large language models. 'How do we build AI systems that understand the physical world, that have persistent memory, that can reason and can plan?' LeCun asked at a French tech conference last year. These are all characteristics of intelligent behavior that large language models 'basically cannot do, or they can only do them in a very superficial, approximate way,' LeCun said. Instead, he emphasized Meta's interest in 'tracing a path towards human-level AI systems, or perhaps even superhuman.' When he returned to France's annual VivaTech conference again on Wednesday, LeCun dodged a question about the pending Scale deal but said his AI research team's plan has 'always been to reach human intelligence and go beyond it.' 'It's just that now we have a clearer vision for how to accomplish this,' he said. LeCun co-founded Meta's AI research division more than a decade ago with Rob Fergus, a fellow professor at New York University. Fergus later left for Google but returned to Meta last month after a 5-year absence to run the research lab, replacing longtime director Joelle Pineau. Fergus wrote on LinkedIn last month that Meta's commitment to long-term AI research 'remains unwavering' and described the work as 'building human-level experiences that transform the way we interact with technology.'
