Independence Day 2025: Top patriotic songs to stir your spirit this Aug 15

New Delhi [India], August 11 (ANI): India is getting ready to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on Friday, August 15, the day when the spirit of freedom and love for the motherland resonates throughout the nation. The day is observed in a grand manner every year, with multiple parades, cultural programs, events, and much more. To enhance the celebrations, music can be brought along, as it has slowly become an integral part of India's culture. Take a look at some of the most soul-stirring patriotic songs for Independence Day 2025. I Love My India (Pardes): The melodious song from the 1997 film is still played on various patriotic occasions, remaining a popular choice among people. The song has been sung by the talented Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, Kavita Krishnamurthy, and Aditya Narayan. Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon: Sung by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, the song truly celebrates the spirit of patriotism and pays a heartfelt tribute to the martyred heroes and their sacrifice. She performed the song live for the first time in 1963 on Republic Day in the presence of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Kar Chale Hum Fida (Haqeeqat): Originally written by Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi, the song was featured in the soundtrack of the 1964 film 'Haqeeqat.' It was crooned by the iconic Mohammad Rafi. A classic number, the song is often associated with the feelings of patriotism, stirring deep emotions. Yeh Do Des Hai Tera (Swades): A part of Shah Rukh Khan's one of the most acclaimed films, Swades, 'Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera' explores themes of national pride, patriotism, and social responsibility. It also depicts the protagonist's emotional connection to the homeland. Ae Watan (Raazi): Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Arijit Singh, the song is picturised on Alia Bhatt in her 2018 film, 'Raazi.' The song beautifully showcases a person's connection to their nation, closely reflecting on Sehmat Khan's decision to become a spy for India. Besides the aforementioned titles, the list of patriotic songs remains endless. Some others are 'Sandese Aata Hai,' 'Aisa Des Hai Mera,' 'Kandho Se Milte Hain Kandhe,' 'Chak De India,' and 'Teri Mitti' among others. (ANI)

Vir Das requests Delhiites to adopt indie dog after SCs relocation order

New Delhi [India], August 11 (ANI): The Supreme Court's order to relocate all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelters has sparked debate among the public. While some have welcomed the move, others have criticised the decision, arguing that it goes against animal welfare principles. Amid the ongoing debate, Vir Das took to Instagram on Monday evening, urging Delhiites to consider adopting an indie dog if they can. "If you are a resident of Delhi. Can I persuade you to adopt an indie off the streets, more than one? They are extremely healthy, low maintenance, and will provide you with more love, affection and gratitude than you could ever imagine. Am also asking you to wholeheartedly and generously," he posted. "Support your nearest animal welfare NGO. I plan on doing so, and I hope you will too. As appeals are filed in court and processes take their time, it's important for our humanity to kick in immediately. Please do your part, big or small, it all adds up," Vir Das requested. He also shared a picture of two dogs that he had adopted from the streets a few years ago. Earlier today, a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said that all localities should be made free of stray dogs and there should not be any compromise. It also made it clear that no captured animal will be released back on the streets. It also ordered contempt proceedings against any individual or organisation that attempts to obstruct the authorities from carrying out the capture drive. "If any individual or organisation comes in the way of picking stray dogs or rounding them up, we will proceed to take action against any such resistance," said Justice Pardiwala. The apex court also directed the states and municipal authorities to create dog shelters with sufficient staff to sterilise and immunise them. "NCT Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, MCD, NMDC shall start picking up stray dogs from all localities, particularly from more vulnerable localities. It is for the authorities to look into and if they have to create a force, do it at the earliest. However, this should be the first and foremost exercise to make all localities free of stray dogs. There should not be any compromise in undertaking the exercise," said the bench. It further directed that authorities in Delhi-NCR must set up a helpline so all dog bite complaints can be registered, with the offending animal picked up within four hours of a complaint. It also ordered all authorities to maintain a record of daily stray dogs captured and detained. The bench stated that CCTV monitoring will ensure compliance, and no dog should be released back into the street or public spaces. (ANI)

How will Ukraine-Russia peace deal directly benefit India? Shashi Tharoor explains

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday talked about how Russia-Ukraine peace deal, if reached, would prove to be beneficial for India, expressing the hope that the additional 25% tariffs imposed by the US would be revoked. "If after the meeting with Putin, there is a meeting with Ukraine, then the second 25% tariff imposed on us due to buying Russian oil will be removed, because it was in the context of the war (between Russia and Ukraine)," ANI quoted him as saying. — ANI (@ANI) The additional tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump was in response to New Delhi's continuous purchase of Russian oil, which the States claimed was fueling Moscow's aggression against Ukraine. Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation and the two leaders reaffirmed "commitment to further deepen India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership." "Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine. We also reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda, and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year," PM Modi said in a post on X. Meanwhile, Russia has also expressed solidarity with India amid pressure from Trump with 50% tariffs over its continued oil purchases. India has defended its Russian oil purchases, terming it a move necessitated by "global market conditions".
