Levi, Amerks sweep past Syracuse

Yahoo02-05-2025
Devon Levi did it again. And so did the team in front of him.
The Amerks posted a second consecutive 4-0 win in game three of their Atlantic Division semifinal series to finish a sweep of the Syracuse Crunch and advance to the division finals.
Levi stopped all 30 shots he faced for his second straight shutout. He has saved the last 78 shots he's faced and has a scoreless streak of 156 minutes and 31 seconds. A streak he will take into round two.
'We have the best goalie on our team in the AHL,' defenseman Kale Clague said. 'As long as we play solid defensively, he's going to bail us out on the couple chances we might give up. He's done it all year.'
'He's just so good. We have so much confidence in him,' Mason Jobst said. 'It doesn't feel like he's scrambling at times. He's in the zone right now.'
Rochester got on the board in the first period with less than five minutes to play when Jobst got free on a breakaway and somehow muscled the puck–and himself–into the net.
Syracuse kept their net clean in the second period, but Clague dented twine from the point 95 seconds into the third. It was the third straight playoff game where the defenseman scored a goal.
Six minutes later, Zach Metsa flipped one on net from the point and Jobst tipped it in for a 3-0 lead. The Amerks defense absolutely shut the door from there. Despite facing elimination and trailing the entire period, Syracuse managed only eight shots on goal in the third.
'I gotta give credit to our D-core. Syracuse is a big, heavy team. I've heard all about it, but our guys gave up no goals in two games,' head coach Michael Leone said. 'It's the goalie (also) for sure. Credit to Dev. He got the game puck today. When you look at how hard we defended, we gave up two goals in the series.'
Brendan Warren closed out the series with an empty net goal 78 seconds before the horn.
It was the first time Rochester swept Syracuse in a playoff series since 1997 and the first time an Amerks goalie had back to back playoff shutouts since Mika Noronen back in 2000.
'I think that the team played unbelievable this series,' Levi said. 'I haven't been watching for 25 years, but I'm sure this is one of the better teams that has been (in Rochester) in a long time. Credit to the group. It's been a great few games.'
Next up for Rochester is the winner of the series between the regular season division champs in Laval and Cleveland. Laval won game one on Wednesday night. If the Rocket do match the Amerks round one sweep, they would close out the Monsters on Sunday. A potential game five in the series would be Friday, May 9th.
Laval would have the home ice advantage against Rochester if they advance, but the Amerks would get three of five at home if Cleveland is the opponent.
That's a concern for next week. This weekend will be about rest and excitement regarding an Amerks team that looks like they will very difficult to eliminate.

Kiyan Anthony Honors Carmelo's National Championship With New Tattoo

Kiyan Anthony Honors Carmelo's National Championship With New Tattoo originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Kiyan Anthony is keeping his father's legacy close. The Syracuse commit and son of NBA legend Carmelo Anthony recently debuted a new tattoo paying tribute to his dad's unforgettable 2003 national championship run with the Orange. The ink, done by artist Steve Wiebe, features Carmelo holding a Post-Standard newspaper with the headline 'Committed,' capturing the moment Kiyan himself announced his decision to play for Syracuse. It's a powerful blend of past and present, honoring Carmelo's iconic freshman season while marking the beginning of Kiyan's own journey in the same program. We've seen some wild tattoos from NBA athletes before, but this one is more touching than anything else. By all accounts, it's Kiyan's way of celebrating and sharing his father's legacy, seemingly in hopes of following in his footsteps. The good news is, he's off to a solid start. Carmelo Anthony is a basketball legend and a 19-year NBA veteran. After leading Syracuse to a National Championship in 2003, he was drafted 3rd overall by the Denver Nuggets. As the New York native developed into a star, he built up a legacy as one of the greatest scorers of his generation. Over 19 years in the league, he averaged 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He was a 10x All-Star, 6x All-NBA player, and former scoring champion. He went on to play for the Nuggets, Knicks, Thunder, Rockets, Trail Blazers, and Lakers. He retired in 2023 and has since been honored as a Hall of Famer. While Carmelo never won an NBA title, that one championship in Syracuse will forever be one of his most iconic and impressive feats. To this day, it's the only championship that the Syracuse Orange have won, but Anthony's own son is aiming to change that. The young hooper turned 18 in March and has officially committed to Syracuse after an electric high school tenure, where he averaged 15.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game as a senior for Long Island Lutheran. At 6'5", Kiyan has developed into a four-star recruit with a clean jumper and intriguing upside. Unsurprisingly, Kiyan is also a gifted scorer and a natural shooter who is good off the catch and off the dribble. This upcoming season will give Kiyan a chance to add to his family's legacy by winning where his dad first became a star over 20 years ago. While he's not projected to be the face of the team, he will surely play a big role for them as someone who is tied to their greatest moment in the program's history. What comes after that is anyone's guess, but it's easy to tell that Kiyan is passionate and devoted to the craft, matching the drive that made Carmelo a legend. If he's able to live up to the hype, it will make for an amazing story in the NBA. If all goes well, Kiyan Anthony's tattoo won't just be a tribute; it'll be the start of a new chapter in the Anthony family legacy. Following in his father's footsteps at Syracuse gives him the perfect stage to make his own mark, and fans will be watching closely to see if he can add another banner to the story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Aug 13, 2025, where it first appeared.

Know Your Enemy, Sabres Central Edition: Are Boosted Blues Bound To Beat Buffalo?

The Buffalo Sabres are facing enormous pressure to end their 14-year Stanley Cup playoff drought next season, and it's not hyperbole to say that the Sabres can't afford so much as a single off-night if they're going to be a playoff team. Every game really counts, and Buffalo needs to beat many above-average squads if they're going to earn a playoff berth in the highly-competitive Atlantic Division.

Mets staring down top prospect decision as Frankie Montas heads to bullpen

Frankie Montas is out, setting the stage for the Mets to unveil a top pitching prospect on Saturday. Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free Nolan McLean and Brandon Sproat are the top candidates for that spot, according to sources, after Montas, following a string of underwhelming performances, was demoted to the bullpen Tuesday. Advertisement In recent days, multiple club sources indicated McLean was ahead of Sproat in the pecking order. But before Tuesday's game, manager Carlos Mendoza wasn't prepared to announce the selection. Mendoza ruled out Paul Blackburn, who is scheduled for another rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Syracuse, removing him from the mix. 'Whoever comes up here, if it's one of the prospects, the plan is to give them a good look here,' Mendoza said before his team faced the Braves at Citi Field. McLean last pitched Sunday for Syracuse and would be on five days of rest if he's called up for his major league debut. The right-hander has pitched to a 2.78 ERA in 16 appearances this season for Syracuse after beginning the year at Double-A Binghamton. McLean, 24, has struck out 97 in 87 ¹/₃ innings for Syracuse. The right-hander has pitched to a 4.10 ERA in 22 starts overall. Sproat, 25, last pitched Thursday for Syracuse. 'There is a lot to like, especially where they are at with their development,' Mendoza said. 'We continue to ask a lot, whether it's Sproat with the changeup or finding something against lefties. The same thing with McLean, but the way they have been competing, they have been going more than five innings and getting results. Everything we are asking them to do we continue to do it.' Advertisement CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS The Mets promoted 22-year-old stud pitching prospect Jonah Tong to Syracuse on Sunday — after he dominated at Double-A Binghamton with a 1.59 ERA over 20 starts — but the expectation within the organization is the right-hander won't be a candidate to pitch in the major leagues this season. Montas threw 72 pitches over three innings in his appearance Saturday behind an opener in Milwaukee and allowed three runs, two of which were unearned. The right-hander overall has disappointed, pitching to a 6.38 ERA in eight appearances for the club. Advertisement Montas arrived last winter on a two-year contract worth $34 million that contains an opt-out after this season. 3 Mets pitcher Brandon Sproat throws in the second inning of a Spring Training game against the Washington Nationals at Clover Park, Friday, Feb. 28, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST 'Right now, he will be that long guy [in the bullpen], but you never know,' Mendoza said. 'That's what I told him, too. He could be pitching the eighth inning in a tie ballgame because of where we are bullpen-wise. It's something that he has never done, so it will be fluid. But what I told him is he's got to be honest with us, too. If he needs an extra day, he's got to let us know. The recovery time and how much we're going to use him is still fluid.' The Mets could use length from a starter. Entering Tuesday's game no starter other than David Peterson had pitched at least six innings since Clay Holmes on June 7. 3 Nolan McLean #13 of the New York Mets throws a pitch during the fifth inning of a spring training Spring Breakout game against the Washington Nationals at Clover Park on March 15, 2024 in Port St. Lucie, getting swept three games at Milwaukee, neither Kodai Senga nor Sean Manaea lasted even five innings, sandwiched around Montas' short performance behind opener Reed Garrett. 'Everyone is different, but I think [length] starts with attacking hitters and staying on the attack, avoiding deep counts,' Mendoza said. 'If you get ahead 0-2 and before you know it it's 3-2 and it's a seven or eight pitch at-bat, and you look up and it's the fourth inning and it's 80 pitches or something and it's the fifth inning and it's 85, 90, I think it's just understanding this and we have done that at times. It's been a struggle for the past six weeks or so.'
