England v India: Three talking points

England v India: Three talking points

News.com.au5 days ago
India will return home satisfied after levelling their five-Test series against England following a dramatic six-run win at the Oval as the home side rue a costly late collapse.
The tourists came back from the dead in the deciding match, taking the last seven England wickets for just 66 runs to finish the series all-square at 2-2.
India arguably won more sessions than they lost over the five Tests, though England were clinical in key moments before failing to press home their advantage in the final match.
AFP Sport picks out three talking points from an enthralling series.
Siraj steps up as India's main man
Mohammed Siraj ultimately proved the difference-maker for India, taking three wickets for nine runs in a match-winning spell on the final morning at the Oval.
The paceman was named player of the match for his figures of nine wickets for 190 runs.
Over the course of the series, in which he played every game, Siraj bowled an energy-sapping 185.3 overs, finishing as the leading wicket-taker on either side, with 23 scalps.
India made it clear before the series that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah would only play three Tests and stayed true to their word, leaving the world's top-ranked bowler out of the final game.
But Siraj ultimately made sure the tourists did not miss him at the Oval.
"When I woke up today (Monday), I thought I could do it. I downloaded a picture from Google saying 'believe'," said Siraj.
Gill shines with the bat as he learns captaincy ropes
Shubman Gill has just embarked on one of the toughest jobs in world sport -- leading a team that carries with it the hopes and dreams of 1.4 billion people.
He has been mesmerising with the bat in England, falling just short of overhauling Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing Indian record tally of 774 runs in a series.
India's player-of-the-series has also grown into his role as skipper and oversaw a victory in the final Test when all had seemed lost.
The 25-year-old, who replaced Rohit Sharma as captain in May, arrived in England with a modest Test average of 35.
But he has led from the front to make 754 runs, including four centuries, finishing just 20 runs behind Gavaskar's mark, set against the West Indies in 1971.
Gill combines elegant, classical batting with an ability to go through the gears when necessary.
This was most eye-catchingly showcased at Edgbaston, where he scored a majestic 269 in the first innings and a turbo-charged 161 in the second.
Gill's batting in England will live long in the memory and his reign as captain is off to a solid start.
Stokes still England's magic man
Ben Stokes sat out the fifth Test victory with a shoulder injury but has again demonstrated emphatically the value of a genuine all-rounder in the modern game.
The England skipper, 34, consistently looked the most dangerous of the home side's bowlers, taking 17 wickets at 25 in 140 overs -- the most he has ever bowled in a series.
He also played a crucial role with the bat, scoring 141 in England's mammoth total of 669 in the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford.
England's bowling at times lacked penetration during the series but Stokes still possesses the rare ability to change a game in the blink of an eye.
The skipper has battled a succession of injuries but England will be desperate to have him on the plane to Australia for the Ashes, which start in November.
Express paceman Jofra Archer made a welcome return to the Test arena against India but played just two matches and his workload is being managed carefully.
Mark Wood, another bowler with genuine pace, has not played Test cricket for nearly 12 months and had knee surgery earlier this year.

Manchester United sign forward Benjamin Sesko: club

Manchester United signed Slovenian international Benjamin Sesko on Saturday, the third forward the 20-time English champions have acquired in the close season. The 22-year-old's arrival from RB Leipzig, in a deal reported to be worth up to £74 million (85 million euros, $99 million), completes an overhaul of the Red Devils' attack that failed to fire last season. "Manchester United is pleased to confirm that Benjamin Sesko has joined the club, subject to registration," read a club statement. The five-year contract includes a guaranteed payment of £66.3million, with the remainder in add-ons, according to reports. Sesko, who has scored 16 goals in 41 international appearances, is United's third major signing in attack following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha for £62.5m and Bryan Mbeumo for £65m with £6m in add-ons. "The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future," said Sesko. 'When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon." Sesko had also been linked with Newcastle, but once again Eddie Howe's League Cup winners failed to land their target despite being able to offer European football this season, unlike Manchester United. Sesko, though, said he felt a vibrancy round the club as they seek to rebound from a desperately disappointing 2024-2025 campaign. "From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created," he said. "It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions. "I cannot wait to start learning from Ruben (Amorim) and connecting with my team-mates to achieve the success that we all know we are capable of together." pi/gj

NRLW: Game results, scores for Round 6 2025

Cronulla's rollercoaster season has continued with a dominant win over the injury-ravaged Dragons thanks to a first-half blitz from the returning Emma Verran, but there are concerns over Quincy Dodd who failed to finish the game with an ankle injury. Verran missed Magic Round due to a foot injury but made up for lost time with a try and three assists as the Sharks clinched a 20-6 victory to continue their LWLWLW start to the season. The Sharks fullback was involved in everything as she sliced through after just four minutes as the visitors made an early statement with Georgia Ravics scoring from the next set after they made 70 metres with ease. Verran then set up Cassie Staples on the other wing to make it 12-0 after 16 minutes before the pair combined midway through the second half to secure the win which keeps them in the finals mix ahead of a home game against the Titans. They will be hoping to have Dodd back after the dynamic hooker limped off late in the first half and didn't return which hurt their ruck attack. Sharks star Emma Verran impressed in her return from injury, with a try and three try assists. Picture: Getty Images DOUR DRAGONS The Dragons were without key attacking weapons Teagan Berry, Raecene McGregor, Indie Bostock and several others, and it showed as they took 63 minutes to make a line-break which led to a cracking solo try. They defended stoutly apart from a 10-minute period in the first half, but their attack still has plenty of work to do as they slumped to a third-straight loss where they've struggled to score points. But there was one moment of magic when youngster Maria Paseka showed off her speed and strength to burst free inside her own half before she got past Verran to get her side on the board. The Sharks' win may have come at a cost, with Quincy Dodd failing to finish the game with an ankle injury. Picture: Getty Images BIDDLE BINNED Cronulla's main concern is strike centre Annessa Biddle who was controversially sent to the sin bin for a late shot on Maddie Studdon midway through the first half. Biddle was causing all sorts of problems for the Dragons defence with 91 metres from seven carries before she was sent from the field for 10 minutes for a tackle the commentators didn't think warranted a stint in the sin bin but was described as 'moderate force with a shoulder to the head' by the referee. She finished with a game-high 224 metres but faces a nervous wait for the charges to drop, while Dodd was placed on report for a high tackle from the following play but shouldn't have anything to worry about. MALIEPO LEADS WARRIORS TO BIG NRLW WIN —Dave Lyall A brilliant display by former New Zealand rugby international Patricia Maliepo has led the Warriors to a 34-6 thumping of the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium in Sydney on Saturday evening. The Warriors, coming off the back of their first away win of the season last start in Magic Round, led from start to finish against a Dogs side that were never able to get going in attack. Five eighth Maliepo ran rampant, scoring 18 points from a brace of tries and five goals from seven attempts, while lock Laishon Albert-Jones, the niece of the legendary Stacey Jones, was too much of a handful up the middle for the Bulldogs. The victory pushed the Warriors to seventh on the ladder, more than halfway through the regular season with the top six teams set to qualify for the finals. The Warriors celebrate after Tyra Wetere scores a try. Picture: Getty Images It took less than three minutes for Payton Takimoana to cross out wide for the Warriors, the winger's seventh try in six games. Maliepo joined Takimoana on the scoresheet ten minutes later, dragging several defenders over the line in a bullocking run. Pani Hopoate powered over under the posts to get the Dogs on the board ten minutes before halftime and the visitors led 12-6 at the break. The Warriors extended their advantage eight minutes into the second half when centre Tysha Ikenasio desperately chased down an in goal kick just centimetres from the dead ball line as Bulldogs winger Elizabeth MacGregor watched on, thinking the ball would trickle out of play. Maliepo grabbed another before winger Tyra Wetere clinched a double inside four minutes, the second a brilliant leap over MacGregor in the in goal. The loss sees the Dogs drop to eighth on the ladder with five games to play. To make matters worse for the Bulldogs, they lost ball playing forward Tegan Dymock, the daughter of Canterbury premiership winner, Jim, to a foot injury in the first half and then star half Tayla Preston with a knee complaint in the second stanza. The pair will head for scans tomorrow.

Man United target Sesko lands in Manchester for $152 transfer medical

Benjamin Sesko has touched down in the UK ahead of his medical with Manchester United. The Slovenia international is on the verge of completing a sensational transfer from RB Leipzig to the Red Devils. United have been battling Prem rivals Newcastle for the striker's signature and stole a march on the Magpies on Thursday by agreeing a £74million ($A152m) deal with Leipzig for the 22-year-old. The deal will see United pay an initial £66.5m and an additional £7.3m in add-ons. Following the agreement, Leipzig gave their star striker permission to travel to the UK to undergo a medical at United's Carrington training ground. Benjamin Sesko is on his way to Old Trafford after signing with Manchester United. Picture: Getty And Sesko touched down at Manchester Airport this evening to move a step closer to completing a huge move. He was seen arriving on a private jet. The ace was then whisked away in a black Mercedes van, with Sesko keeping a low profile in the back seat of the vehicle. It's thought he'll undergo his medical on Friday, and could then be unveiled at Man Utd's pre-season friendly against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on Saturday. The completion of the deal with bring an end to a long running saga over the striker's future. Sesko was on the radar of United's long-time league rivals Arsenal earlier this summer. But the Gunners ended their interest in the Slovenian to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon. Arsenal had shown interest in Sesko, but opted for Viktor Gyokeres instead. Picture: AFP Newcastle moved for Sesko last week in a bid to replace wantaway Alexander Isak, who wants to join Prem champions Liverpool. Last season's Carabao Cup winners tabled a £71m bid for Sesko's services. But Sesko has snubbed a move to St James' Park in favour of a switch to Old Trafford. SunSport understands he preferred the prospect of playing at the Theatre of Dreams when both options became a possibility. Sesko joined Leipzig from the German outfit's sister club RB Salzburg in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £20m. He's flourished for the Bundesliga club since his move to the Red Bull Arena, scoring 27 goals and racking up 7 assists in 64 appearances. Twenty-one of those goals, including four in the Champions League, came last season.
