ACC Preview 2025: Can the Miami Hurricanes finally break through?
The Miami Hurricanes were on the cusp of making one or both of those, but fell just short.
Those three should continue at the top of the league, while a few other regulars look to break through and make noise.
Here's a quick look at all 17 teams in the conference.

Clemson went from being blown out by Georgia to begin the season to winning the ACC and making it back to the College Football Playoff. With Cade Klubnik back for his senior season and a defense that should be solid, the Tigers are in a position to once again be among the best in college football.

The Hurricanes started a perfect 9-0 last season before losing two of their final three regular-season games to see their hopes for appearances in the ACC title game and College Football Playoff slip away. A loss in the Pop-Tarts Bowl capped a sour finish to the season. Miami will look to Beck to keep the offense humming after the Hurricanes led the country in multiple categories a year ago and a revamped defense under new defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman should show marked improvement as well. Will it be enough for the Hurricanes to finally get over the hump?

SMU surprised many last year by making the ACC title game in its first season in the conference. The Mustangs look to pick up where they left off. Returning All-ACC safety Isaiah Nwokobia should lead the defense while quarterback Kevin Jennings will run the offense for a second consecutive season. SMU also added 20 players through the transfer portal.

Players to watch: RB Isaac Brown, WR Caullin Lacy, C Pete Nygra, LB Stanquan Clark
Key Games: at Miami, Oct. 17; vs. Clemson, Nov. 14; at SMU, Nov. 22
Louisville is the team beyond Clemson, Miami and SMU most likely to break through and have a chance to compete for the conference title. They were a top-15 offense nationally last season and should be among the country's best again in 2025. The defense, however, will need to improve if the Cardinals want to contend. Louisville's schedule does it little favors as well, with the Cardinals facing all three teams in the top tier of the conference, with two of those games on the road.

Key Games: at Colorado, Aug. 29; vs. Clemson, Sept. 13; vs. Georgia, Nov. 28
Georgia Tech has gone 7-6 in each of its first two years under coach Brent Key, its first time with consecutive winning seasons since 2013 and 2014. The Yellow Jackets had the second-best rushing offense in the ACC last year (187 yards per game) and that should continue with Jamal Haynes returning for his senior year.

It was a season to forget for FSU in 2024, with the Seminoles going from preseason favorites in the conference and a top-10 ranking to an abysmal 2-10 finish with their only wins being against Cal and FCS Charleston Southern. The DJ Uiagalelei experiment failed miserably, and the offense was one of the worst in the country. FSU should be much better this year — it can't get much worse, right? — but the schedule is rough, with non-conference games against Alabama and Florida plus ACC matchups with Miami and Clemson on the docket.

Players to watch: OL Brian Parker II, DB Chandler Rivers, DB Terry Moore
Key Games: vs. Illinois, Sept. 6; at Clemson, Nov. 1; at UNC, Nov. 22
Duke surprised many in Year 1 under Manny Diaz, going 9-4 overall and 6-1 in games decided by one score. While they most likely will be in the middle of the pack in the league at best this season, they have a chance to make a statement with an interesting non-conference slate with games against Illinois and Tulane and a reasonably favorable ACC schedule outside of its game with Clemson.

Players to watch: QB Eli Holstein, LB Kyle Louis, RB Desmond Reid, LB Rasheem Biles
Key Games: at West Virginia, Sept. 13; vs Notre Dame, Nov. 15; vs. Miami, Nov. 29
The Panthers started the season 7-0 and reached as high as No. 18 in the rankings before losing each of their final six games. Which team is the real Pittsburgh? Probably somewhere in the middle, but they have a chance to make some noise this season if things go their way. Eli Holstein should build on a solid freshman season, while Desmond Reid is a dynamic threat in the backfield. Linebackers Kyle Louis and Rasheem Biles combined for 30 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks a year ago.

Players to watch: TE Justin Joly, RB Hollywood Smothers, DL Brandon Cleveland, LB Sean Brown
Key Games: at Notre Dame, Oct. 11; at Miami, Nov. 15; vs. UNC, Nov. 29
The Wolfpack began the season ranked No. 24 in the country but finished 6-7 with losses to both ranked teams it faced (Tennessee and Clemson) and a 3-5 record in league play. They'll likely be in the middle of the pack again this season.

Players to watch: OL Tomas Rimac, RB Terion Stewart, DL Ben Bell, LB Caleb Woodson
Key Games: at South Carolina, Aug. 31; vs. Miami, Nov. 22; at Virginia, Nov. 29
The Hokies were a dark horse team to make noise in the ACC last season; instead, they went .500 in the regular season before falling in the Duke's Mayo Bowl to Minnesota to finish 6-7. This is Year 4 of the Brent Fry era and they'll have to replace a lot of talent, namely first-team All-ACC defensive linemen Antwaun Powell-Ryland and Aeneas Peebles, top running back Bhayshul Tuten and their top four wide receivers.

Players to watch: DB Duce Chestnut, P Jack Stonehouse, RB Yasin Willis
Key Games: at Tennessee, Aug. 30; at Clemson, Sept. 20; at Notre Dame, Nov. 22
Syracuse is coming off its first 10-win season since 2018 and just its fifth since 1990, but replacing star quarterback Kyle McCord (4,779 passing yards, 34 touchdowns in 2024), their top three threats in the passing game (tight end Oronde Gasden II and receivers Jackson Meeks and Trebor Pena) and their top running back in LeQuint Allen will be a tall task. A schedule with all five of its big games — Tennessee, Clemson, SMU, Miami and Notre Dame — being on the road doesn't help, either.

Key Games: vs. Clemson, Oct. 4; at Syracuse, Oct. 31; at N.C. State, Nov. 29
While the Tar Heels likely won't contend in the ACC this year, they will be a national storyline with Bill Belichick at the helm in his first coaching stint since parting ways with the New England Patriots after 24 seasons and six Super Bowls. UNC was very active in the transfer portal, adding 41 players that way over the offseason.

Boston College went 7-6 for the second consecutive season and has now gone 15 consecutive seasons since reaching an elusive eighth win.

Cal went 6-7 in its first season in the ACC, with five of its six conference losses being by one score.

Since a two-year run in which it went 19-8 and even cracked the top 10 in the CFP poll, Wake Forest has gone 4-8 each of the past two years. Running back Demond Claiborne should be a bright spot for the Demon Deacons after a breakout junior year (1,049 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns).

SEC football 9-game schedule: Which annual rivalries may be saved by new format
While Week 0 of the college football season commences in the coming days, the SEC is already looking ahead to 2026. Announced on Aug. 21, the SEC is shifting from its eight-game conference schedule to a nine-game conference slate starting next season. It's the first change to the conference's regular season schedule format in over three decades, as the last one took place in 1992 when Arkansas and South Carolina joined the conference. The SEC's decision to implement a nine-game schedule puts it in company with the Big Ten and Big 12. REQUIRED READING: SEC announces move to 9-game conference schedule beginning in 2026; joins Big Ten, Big 12 "This format protects rivalries, increases competitive balance, and paired with our requirement to play an additional Power opponent, ensures SEC teams are well prepared to compete and succeed in the College Football Playoff," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. Speaking of those rivalries, the SEC is filled with some of college football's longest-standing and most passionate ones. The question that now sits out there is which of the ones that weren't already protected by the dissolution of divisions following Oklahoma and Texas' arrival in 2024 will stay with this new format, as each SEC team will now play three opponents annually, with the six remaining games coming against rotating opponents. Here's a look at some of the annual rivalries in the SEC that could be saved following Thursday's announcement of a nine-game conference schedule: SEC football projected rivalries protected by 9-game schedule Note: The SEC rivals that were protected when the conference expanded to its 18-team membership ahead of the 2024 season include: Florida-Georgia; Vanderbilt-Tennessee; Kentucky-South Carolina; Texas-Oklahoma (Red River Rivalry); Auburn-Alabama (Iron Bowl) and Ole Miss-Mississippi (Egg Bowl). Also note that the following preserved rivalry projections are not necessarily locked by the SEC. Here are some projected rivalries that could now be protected: Though the First Saturday in November rivalry between Alabama and LSU hasn't been much of a rivalry of late, as the Crimson Tide has won 12 of the past 14 meetings against the Tigers, it's one of the SEC's most well-known rivalries. The first meeting between Alabama and LSU dates back to 1895, when the Tigers won 12-6. According to Alabama's record book, both programs have faced each other annually since 1967. But what has made this one of the SEC's top rivalries has been the growth it has had over the years, especially during the Nick Saban years of the rivalry as he coached at both schools from 2000-04 (LSU) and 2007-2023 (Alabama). Being in the old SEC West Division, the annual LSU and Alabama game had tiebreaker rights for the division's representative in the SEC championship game. This was a game Saban did not wish to be preserved, stating Alabama has more history with Mississippi State. He has since come around on keeping LSU as an annual fixture the Tide's schedule. The "Third Saturday in October" rivalry between Tennessee and Alabama dates back to the 1901 college football season when both programs met for the first time in Birmingham, Alabama. However, the rivalry between the two SEC teams did not take off until 1928, when both Tennessee and Alabama were coached by Robert Neyland and Wallace Wade, respectively. Tennessee took the most recent chapter of the rivalry last season when the 10th-ranked Vols defeated the seventh-ranked Crimson Tide at Neyland Stadium 21-17. Former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Brazzell with 5:52 remaining in the quarter before the Vols defense came up with a fourth-down stop to snap a two-game losing skid to the Tide. As the name implies, the Auburn vs. Georgia rivalry is not only one of the oldest and most played rivalries between two Southern programs, but also in college football. Noted by The Athletic, "The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry" between the Tigers and Bulldogs is tied with Virginia-UNC as the second-most played rivalry in Division I FBS history at 129 games. The rivalry began back in 1892 and has included 24 ranked matchups throughout the years. It's another SEC rivalry that has been one-sided of late, though, as Auburn has dropped each of the last eight meetings against Georgia. Your move, Big Ten While the Magnolia Bowl is not the biggest rivalry for both LSU and Ole Miss each season, it still is one of the SEC (and college football's) top — and oldest — rivalries. The rivalry dates back to 1894, but it did not receive its moniker until 2008, as noted by The Daily Advertiser, part of the USA TODAY Network, when a trophy was added to it. The game is coined the Magnolia Bowl after the state flower of both Louisiana and Mississippi. Last year's meeting between LSU and Ole Miss at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge was an all-time game in the rivalry series, as Garrett Nussmeier led the Tigers to a game-tying touchdown in the final seconds of regulation and then a 29-26 overtime win with a 25-yard touchdown to Kyren Lacy. The win for LSU kept its College Football Playoff hopes in tact for one more week, while it put a damper on Ole Miss' chances as it was the Rebels' second conference loss. The rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M is well-known and documented. After all, both universities mention the other in their fight songs. Just look at the mix-up at SEC football media days this season when Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian took the podium in Atlanta to the playing of the "Aggie War Hymn" fight song, and the reaction it caused on social media. The rivalry between the Longhorns and the Aggies has spanned across three different conferences throughout the years: the Southwest Conference, the Big 12 and now the SEC. After a 13-year hiatus, Texas and Texas A&M renewed the rivalry last season with their meeting in College Station, which the Longhorns won 17-7. It has become one of the more storied college football rivalries in the sport. Both teams have played annually since 1990, though the all-time series dates back to 1916. Traditionally played in September, this year's meeting between Tennessee and Florida will take place on Nov. 22, marking the second straight year that it hasn't been played in the first full month of the season. Last year's meeting between the Vols and the Gators was coined the "Dylan Sampson Game" as former Tennessee running back scored his third touchdown of the game in overtime to give the Vols the 23-17 win, after Florida tied the game with 29 seconds remaining in regulation on a 27-yard touchdown pass from DJ Lagway. Last year's 20-10 win for Texas marked the first time the former Southwest Conference foes met as conference rivals in 33 years on Saturday. The Razorbacks had a good amount of success against the Longhorns in the late 1930s, as Arkansas won four consecutive games against Texas from 1935 through 1938. The four-game winning streak is the longest win streak for Arkansas in the all-time series against Texas. The rivalry dates back to 1894. That 1894 contest started a 14-game win streak for Texas, which lasted through 1932. The Longhorns also had a 12-game win streak that spanned from 1939 through 1953. When is the SEC moving to 9-game schedule? In its announcement on Thursday, the SEC announced that it will shift to a nine-game regular season conference schedule starting in 2026.

SEC teams must play major non-conference game: Which ones must make schedule changes?
SEC schedules are now required to get even tougher. The league announced it will finally make the move to a nine-game conference slate starting with the 2026 season, but that wasn't the only notable decision the SEC made on Aug. 21. It will also require its teams to schedule one additional "high quality" non-conference opponent from the ACC, Big Ten or Big 12 or Notre Dame each season. In short, every SEC school now will be mandated to play 10 games a season against a Power 4 team. It should up the strength of schedule of its programs, and it's no coincidence it came after the College Football Playoff selection committee announced a day prior it would put greater emphasis on strength of schedule. "The SEC has established itself as the leader in delivering the most compelling football schedule in college athletics,' commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. "Fans will see traditional rivalries preserved, new matchups more frequently, and a level of competition unmatched across the nation." With the non-conference schedule requirment set to be in place for 2026, it's time to look to see if SEC teams will already meet the standard, or if they'll soon have to figure out who to play. Which SEC teams have a Power 4 non-conference team scheduled? The good news is everyone, as all 16 SEC teams are scheduled to play at least four games against a Power 4 non-conference foe within the next 10 years, according to FBSchedules. However, some of them are going need to quickly figure out who to put on their schedule. Most notably is Mississippi, which doesn't have a Power 4 non-conference game in 2026 through 2031. This comes as the Rebels also don't have a Power 4 non-conference game in 2025. Another team that will need to figure out its immediate schedule is Auburn, which doesn't have one scheduled in 2027 and 2028. The Tigers also don't have any non-conference Power 4 teams set to play after the 2030 season. Other teams that have a few years to figure out their schedules in include: Meanwhile, there are some SEC teams that benefit from having annual rivalries with teams in Power 4 conferences, like Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, who already meet the requirement through the 2037 season. The Gators and Bulldogs have gone to the extreme with three Power 4 non-conference games scheduled; Florida has it in 2028 and 2031 while Georgia will do it in 2027, 2030 and 2033. The Auburn Tigers have not had the best of luck since the days of former head coach Gus Malzahn, who holds their last winning season (2020). The Tigers finished 6-5 in the shortened Covid-19 season, but the struggles go back further than that. The team's last bowl win was in 2018, and it has been 12 years since Auburn competed for a national title. On Tuesday, Auburn appeared on an unfortunate top 25 list via On3's Brett McMurphy. McMurphy labeled the Tigers as the AP voters' No. 2 most overrated preseason team since the College Football Playoff era started in 2014. The only team above them was the USC Trojans. The last time Auburn was ranked in the AP Poll was in 2020, when it started the year at No. 11. Of the last three times that the Tigers were ranked to start the year in 2015, 2018, and 2020, they ended the year outside the top 25. Current head coach Hugh Freeze is entering a crucial year in his Auburn tenure after posting an 11-14 record through two seasons. Recruiting has been a strength of Freeze's since taking the job in 2023, earning top-10 classes in 2024 and 2025 via On3 Sports. Things have not gone well in the 2026 class, however. The Tigers lost key commitments over the offseason, and the class now ranks at No. 37 overall. Auburn already received a boost recently with the addition of four-star receiver Jase Matthews. On3's Steve Wiltfong believed the potential of playing with former five-star quarterback Deuce Knight swayed Matthews in the recruiting process. He also predicted that Auburn would be flipping plenty of prospects this year if the Tigers can compete for a CFP spot. Auburn hopes to reach that level after going for broke in the transfer portal with key additions like Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Jackson Arnold, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets receiver Eric Singleton Jr., and Virginia Tech Hokies offensive tackle Xavier Chaplin.
