Global News7 hours ago

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be without the CFL's most outstanding player for a second straight game, while one of their top receivers is questionable to play against the still-winless Edmonton Elks on Thursday.
Running back Brady Oliveira missed Tuesday's practice and has already been ruled out for the week four matchup with a shoulder injury. Receiver Nic Demski also sat out of Tuesday's session and is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. Demski had his leg rolled in the fourth quarter of their win over the BC Lions.
Long snapper Mike Benson (hip) and running back Peyton Logan (thigh) also won't play this week.
The Bombers have a short turnaround with only five days between games, so it was their only full practice to prepare for the Elks.
Bombers defensive end Willie Jefferson was back on the practice field after being ejected from their last game for taking two objectionable conduct penalties. The first penalty flag was for trash talking the Lions sideline, and the second was for what he called a head-butt that wasn't shown on the broadcast.

It set off a scrum in the fourth quarter with an official even getting hit as the BC Lions Kory Woodruff was also kicked out.

Jefferson said it's the first time in his career he's been ejected.
'It won't happen again,' Jefferson said. 'I got in trouble by my little girls and yeah I heard it from coach (Mike) O'Shea. We had a conversation. It's not my character. It's never been in me to to get ejected from a game, right?
'I've always been the guy trying to keep my guys level-headed and things like that. But BC Place, things can happen, so, it is what it is.
'Coach O'Shea was a little bit more direct with his approach. Just telling me that wasn't me, that's not what we do here, don't let it happen again, those type of things.'

Roughriders announce $2.1 million profit from 2024

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are celebrating wins on and off the football field. Article content Not only is the CFL club off to a 3-0 start in the 2025 regular season, but off the field the team announced a net operating profit of $2.1 million from the 2024 season during Tuesday evening's annual general meeting. This comes one year after the team announced an annual loss of $1.1 million in 2023. Article content Article content Article content 'It was a good year financially,' said Roughriders president Craig Reynolds, who provided a media briefing alongside CFO Kent Paul on Tuesday. 'I think obviously a bounce back year on the field. Article content 'And any time you're able to have every major revenue item grow and then manage your expenses, you tend to have a really good financial year.' Article content After back-to-back seasons of missing the playoffs with 6-12 records, Saskatchewan returned to the postseason with a home playoff game in 2024 after a 9-8-1 regular season record under first-year head coach Corey Mace. In the Western semifinal, the Roughriders defeated the visiting B.C. Lions before eventually falling to the host Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the West final. Article content While the home playoff game — which generated $1.5 million in revenue — played a role in the financial turnaround, the club's new obsidian green alternate jerseys and logo helped the club see a $2.4 million increase in merchandise sales last year, which were the highest totals since 2018. Article content Article content 'Hosting a home playoff game is important, and certainly adds to the bottom line, and certainly is one of the reasons for the revenue growth,' said Reynolds. 'And then I think you can't talk about last year without talking about the success of the alt logo, alt jersey launch that had a significant impact on the financial statements. Article content Article content '(The alt jersey and logo) vastly exceeded our expectations. I think we were reasonably confident that it would resonate with our fans, but I don't think we had any idea how much it would resonate. Article content 'And I think we saw that from the launch from day one and the days following, we quickly realized we were going to blow past our projections.' Article content Overall, the Roughriders generated 35 per cent of the club's revenue from gate receipts, which were up just over $300,000 from 2023 for a total of $14.4 million. Article content Following three straight years of decline, season ticket sales — which account for roughly $10 million of the $14 million in gate receipts — are on an upward trajectory according to Reynolds.

So, it's hugs and tears of joy, and kids that were jumping up and down on the dock. It was a really fun moment. 'Thankful for the teams that I played on, friendships, teammates, family and coaches that have all been such an important part of my journey. Just a huge honour.' The now 46-year-old first put on the Team Canada jersey during the 1997-98 season. She also played for Harvard University, the Toronto/Mississauga Aeros, and the Mississauga Chiefs during her illustrious 13-year international career. 'I think back of growing up in Wildwood Park, right, in Fort Garry,' she said. 'Just going to the Wildwood Community Club and that's where it first started for me. I'd either take a little bag of hockey pucks and take my skates, and my stick and over my shoulder and walk to the end of the street, the outdoor rink.' Botterill was also inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame last year. The Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 10.
