South Korea May inflation weakest in 5 months, below forecast
SEOUL :South Korea's consumer inflation slowed in May to the weakest pace in five months, government data showed on Wednesday, coming in below market expectations.
The consumer price index rose 1.9 per cent in May from a year earlier, after rising 2.1 per cent in April, according to Statistics Korea.
It was the weakest since December 2024 and lower than the median 2.1 per cent rise tipped in a Reuters poll of economists.
The Bank of Korea lowered interest rates last week for a fourth time in its current easing cycle to support an economic recovery clouded by U.S. tariffs, with four of its seven board members open to more cuts in the next three months.

Japan's Eneos says unplanned shutdown begins at 77,000-bpd unit at Kawasaki
TOKYO :Japan's biggest refiner, Eneos Corp, experienced an unplanned shutdown of the 77,000 barrels-per-day No.3 crude distillation unit at its Kawasaki refinery near Tokyo, starting June 4, a company spokesperson said on Thursday. The company declined to provide a reason for the shutdown or an expected timeline for resuming operation. The refiner, part of Eneos Holdings, restarted another crude distillation unit, the 105,000-bpd No.3 CDU at its Mizushima-B refinery in western Japan on June 3, following a scheduled turnaround that began on February 26, the spokesperson said. At the same refinery, the company had resumed operations at the 95,200-bpd No.2 CDU on May 16 after an unplanned shutdown that started on April 24. Also on May 16, Eneos shut the 141,000-bpd CDU at its Sakai refinery in western Japan for scheduled maintenance, with plans to restart it in early July, the spokesperson added.

In an extraordinary rant in the Oval Office as visiting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sat mutely beside him, Mr Trump unloaded on SpaceX and Tesla boss Mr Musk in his first comments on the issue. 'Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore. I was surprised,' Mr Trump told reporters in the Oval Office after former adviser Mr Musk slammed the Bill as an 'abomination'. 'I'm very disappointed, because Elon knew the inner workings of this Bill better than almost anybody sitting here... All of a sudden, he had a problem,' Mr Trump added. Mr Musk hit back minutes later on his X social network, saying the 78-year-old president's claims he had advance sight of the Bill were 'false.' 'Whatever,' he added above a video of Mr Trump saying Mr Musk was upset about the loss of subsidies for electric vehicles. The latest clash comes less than a week since Mr Trump held a grand Oval Office farewell for Mr Musk as he wrapped up his time leading the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). Mr Trump said he could understand why Mr Musk was upset with some steps he had taken, including withdrawing a nominee to lead the Nasa space agency whom the tech tycoon had backed. The US president's 'big, beautiful Bill' on tax and spending – the centrepiece of his domestic agenda – could define his second term and make or break Republican prospects in the 2026 midterm elections. Mr Musk, however, called it a 'disgusting abomination' on June 3. A day later, the magnate called for Republicans to 'kill the Bill,' and for an alternative plan that 'doesn't massively grow the deficit.'
