Satwiksairaj-Chirag set for return to action during Singapore Open
New Delhi [India], May 26 (ANI): India's top men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will be in action during the Singapore Open badminton tournament starting from Tuesday.
Sindhu, currently ranked at number 16th in women's singles competition, has had a tough season so far, with her best performance being a quarterfinal run in the India Open in January. It was followed by four successive first-round exits in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Tour events, as per Olympics.com.
Sindhu will be aiming to overcome this poor run of form at the tournament, which she won way back in 2022. The world number 22 Malvika Bansod, slowly climbing up the ranks, will also be a part of the women's singles along with Anmol Kharb and Unnati Hooda.
After recovering from injuries, Satwik-Chirag will also be aiming to recapture their magic of the early season, when they made it to the semifinals of the Malaysia Open and India Open. They have not featured in any competitive match since their pre-quarterfinal exit in the All England Open back in March.
The Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen, who made it to the bronze medal clash at the Paris Olympics last year, will also be aiming to recapture his rhythm after just one quarterfinal finish in six events this year. He is joined by HS Prannoy in the men's singles competition.
Former world number one Kidambi Srikanth will be skipping the tournament after his runners-up finish at the Malaysia Masters last week.
In the women's doubles, the charge will be led by Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, 10th in the badminton rankings. Paris 2024 Olympian Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila will lead the Indian charge in the mixed doubles.

Razif warns Sze Fei-Izzuddin on world No.1 ranking
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Razif Sidek has questioned whether newly crowned world No. 1 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani are struggling to cope with the weight of expectations at the top. The men's doubles pair suffered another blow on Friday, falling in the Singapore Open quarter-finals to Asian Games champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty of India, extending their run of five consecutive events without a semi-final appearance. "They're not handling the pressure well," said Razif bluntly. "Becoming world No. 1 is easier than staying there. Everyone wants to beat you once you're on top, and they look like they're struggling to deal with that." The Malaysians soared to world No. 1 on May 27 after winning three World Tour titles since turning professional and leaving the BA of Malaysia (BAM) in September last year. But their form has dipped since lifting the Super 750 India Open in January, with recent defeats and early exits raising concerns. Razif, who famously topped the world rankings in 1990 with his brother Datuk Seri Jalani Sidek, believes the pair have lost their spark and need to urgently regroup. "They need to check and balance everything. Re-strategise, and figure out how to maintain their performance," he added. "They used to be sharp and dangerous. Now, they're looking a little lost." Razif pointed out that tough draws in recent tournaments may have contributed, but insisted there's no excuse for the lack of intensity. "They're an attacking pair. That requires power, endurance and consistency, and I don't see that right now," said the former All England champion. "They've clearly dropped off physically. They're not as offensive as they were post-Paris Olympics. Pressure may be one part of it, but they need to meet the physical demands that come with being the best." Sze Fei-Izzuddin will head into the Indonesia Open Super 1000 in Jakarta next week as the top seeds with a target on their backs. They open against Taiwan's world No. 20 Lee Fang Chih-Lee Fang Jen, and are expected to face China's Xi Hao Nan-Zheng Wei Han (No. 30) and Indonesia's Sabar Karyaman-Moh Reza Isfahani (No. 8) before reaching the business end.

Fiji's Dakuwaqa joins third-tier Nice after bite sentence
FORMER Olympic rugby sevens champion Masivesi Dakuwaqa will join French third-tier club Nice for next season, a week after being handed a suspended prison sentence for biting a team-mate, a club source told AFP. In January, Rio 2016 gold medallist Dakuwaqa bit Pierre Pages' cheek during a night out when they were both at second-tier outfit Biarritz. Last week, Fijian 31-year-old Dakuwaqa was handed an eight-month suspended sentence and a 300 euros ($342) fine for the incident. The back-rower, who can also feature at centre and on the wing was sacked by the Basque side and joined third division Perigueux on a short-term deal. Nice finished bottom of ProD2 this season after just one campaign in the second division and will be coached by Gareth Baber, who was Fiji sevens coach between 2016 and 2021, next season. They have also signed Fiji captain Waisea Nayacalevu and ex-South Africa back-rower Uzair Cassiem for the coming campaign.
