India added six more medals to their tally at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 on Thursday, taking their total haul to 14. The day's events saw Indian athletes clinch three golds, two silvers, and a bronze. Olympians Avinash Sable and Jyothi Yarraji led the charge, each claiming gold in their respective events. Sable triumphed in the men's 3000m steeplechase, while Yarraji crossed the finish line first in the women's 100m hurdles. In another standout performance, the Indian women's 4x400m relay team successfully defended their title, securing yet another gold for the country, as reported by India's strong showing continues to solidify their position as a dominant force in the continental athletics arena. Sable, who secured the silver medal in the Asian Athletics Championships 2019, secured the gold six years later with a season's best timing of 8:20.92, with the rest of the podium completed by Japan's Yutaro Niinae (8:24.41) and Qatar's Zakaria Elahlaami (8:27.12). The current Asian Games champion Sable is the first Indian to secure a 3000 m men's steeplechase gold at the Asian Athletics Championships after 36 years, with the first being the Arjuna Award recipient Deena Ram back in 1989. Jyothi backed the second gold of the day, successfully defending her women's 100m hurdles title by clocking a new championship record time of 12.96 seconds. The second and third spots were taken by Japan's Yumi Tanaka and China's Wu Yanni with the times of 13.07 (.061) and 13.07(.068), respectively. The Indian quartet of Jisna Mathew, Rupal Chaudhary, Kunja Rajitha and Subha Venkatesan bagged the women's 4x400m relay gold with season-best timings of 3:34.18. This was India's first gold medal in the category since 2013 when the quartet of Nirmala Sheoran, Tintu Luka, Anu Mariam Jose and Poovamma Raju Machettira finished on top of the podium in Balewadi, Pune. Rupal and Subha helped India in defending their mixed 4x400m relay team title on Wednesday. However, the men's 4x400m relay team bagged a silver after the grouping of Jay Kumar, Dharmveer Choudhary, Manu Thekkinalil Saji, and Vishal TK clocked the timing of 3:03.67., The gold medal went to Qatar with timings of 3:03.5,2 and China landed the bronze after clocking 3:03.73. In the women's long jump event, two Indian athletes made it to the podium as Asian Games runners-up Ancy Sojan (6.33 m) got the silver medal and the Asian Championships silver medalist Shaili Singh (6.30 m) got the bronze. Gumi [South Korea], May 27 (ANI): Indian athletes kickstarted the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi on a high, with Gulveer Singh securing a gold medal in men's 10,000 m and Servin Sebastian bagging a 20 km race walk bronze medal. As per Annu Rani, in women's javelin throw, bagged the fourth spot. Gulveer, the national record holder in men's 3000m, 5000m and 10000m, clocked 28:38.63 minutes for the win in Gumi. The Indian athlete outdid Japan's Mebuki Suzuki (28:43.84) and Bahrain's Albert Kibichi Rop (28:46.82). India's Sawan Barwal finished fourth with 28:50.53 minutes. Gulveer will also later feature in men's 5000 m action later on, having secured a bronze medal in the same category in the Asian Championships back in 2023. Earlier, Servin also bagged a bronze medal in the men's 20 km race walk event, clocking personal best of 1:21:14 hour, finishing behind Wang Zhaozhao (1:20:37) of China and Kento Yoshikawa (1:20:46) of Japan. The fifth position was bagged by India's Amit Khatri, who had the timings of 1:22:15 hour. Servin's previous best was in the National Games earlier this year, while Akshdeep holds the national record in the category, having clocked 1:19:55 hours in the National Games as well. The Asian Games champion Annu though, fell short of a medal with her best attempt of 58.30 m, which was also her third attempt. China's Su Lingdan bagged the gold medal, with a personal best of 63.92m, while the Japanese duo Sae Takemoto (58.94m) and Momone Ueda (58.60m) filled the rest of the podium. Annu's personal best of 63.82 m, is also the Indian national record in women's javelin throw. Also, Yoonus Shah made it to the final of the men's 1500 m final, finishing second in the heats with a time of 3:46.96 minutes. Ajay Kumar Saroj had bagged the Asian Championships gold for the nation two years back in Bangkok in this event. Sarvesh Anil Kushare also qualified for the men's high jump final after a joint-fourth place finish in the qualifiers with a 2.10m clearance. Vishal TK secured a spot in the men's 400 m final while Jay Kumar was eliminated in the semifinals. Vishal also clocked his new personal best of 46.05s in the semi-finals. Paris 2024 Olympian Vithya Ramraj and Rupal Chaudhary also secured their tickets to the semi-finals of the women's 400m. (ANI)

Sindhu, currently ranked at number 16th in women's singles competition, has had a tough season so far, with her best performance being a quarterfinal run in the India Open in January. It was followed by four successive first-round exits in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Tour events, as per Sindhu will be aiming to overcome this poor run of form at the tournament, which she won way back in 2022. The world number 22 Malvika Bansod, slowly climbing up the ranks, will also be a part of the women's singles along with Anmol Kharb and Unnati Hooda. After recovering from injuries, Satwik-Chirag will also be aiming to recapture their magic of the early season, when they made it to the semifinals of the Malaysia Open and India Open. They have not featured in any competitive match since their pre-quarterfinal exit in the All England Open back in March. The Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen, who made it to the bronze medal clash at the Paris Olympics last year, will also be aiming to recapture his rhythm after just one quarterfinal finish in six events this year. He is joined by HS Prannoy in the men's singles competition. Former world number one Kidambi Srikanth will be skipping the tournament after his runners-up finish at the Malaysia Masters last week.
