US pressures NATO to seal deal on ramping up defence spending
AP image BRUSSELS: US defence chief Pete Hegseth on Thursday pushed Nato to agree a deal on ramping up defence spending that can satisfy President Donald Trump at a summit later this month. The volatile US leader has demanded that alliance members agree to boost defence budgets to five percent of their GDP at the June 24-25 meeting in The Netherlands. Nato chief Mark Rutte has put forward a compromise agreement for 3.5 percent of GDP on core military spending by 2032, and 1.5 percent on broader security-related areas such as infrastructure. "We're here to continue the work that President Trump started, which is a commitment to five percent defence spending across this alliance, which we think will happen, we think has to happen by the summit at The Hague," Hegseth said at the start of a meeting with Nato counterparts in Brussels. "That's our focus. Five percent, combat credible and capable forces, and then making sure Nato is focused on its core mission, continental defence, where its comparative advantage exists." Multiple diplomats say that Rutte looks on track to secure the deal for the summit in The Hague -- but that some allies are still hesitant about committing to such levels of spending. "I'm really, absolutely, positively convinced that at the summit with the 32, we will come to an agreement when it comes to this really big increase in defence spending," the Nato chief said on Wednesday. Most vocal in its reluctance is Spain, which is only set to reach NATO's current target of two percent of GDP by the end of this year. Diplomats say that other countries are also haggling over making the timeline longer and dropping a demand for core defence spending to increase by 0.2 percentage points each year. But the deal appears an acceptable compromise to most, which will allow Trump to claim that he has achieved his headline demand, while in reality setting the bar lower for struggling European allies. The United States has backed Rutte's plan -- but its ambassador to Nato insisted on Wednesday that Washington wants to see "plans, budgets, timelines, deliverables" to meet the target. In a connected move, Nato ministers will sign off at their meeting in Brussels on new capability targets for the weaponry needed to face the threat from Russia. Nato officials have estimated that, on average, meeting the new targets would cost countries between 3.5 and 3.7 percent of GDP. Hegseth, a former TV presenter, rocked Nato on his last visit in February with a fiery warning that Washington could look to scale back its forces in Europe to focus on China. Since then there has been no concrete announcement from the United States on troop withdrawals, but Natoallies remain on tenterhooks. With Nato appearing headed for the defence spending deal, another thorny issue now threatens to overshadow the summit in three weeks time: what to do about Ukraine? Trump's return to the White House ripped up Washington's support for Ukraine and upended the West's approach to Russia's three-year-long war. Hegseth underlined US disengagement with Kyiv by skipping a meeting of Ukraine's backers in Brussels on Wednesday. Kyiv's European allies are pressing strongly to overcome US reluctance and invite Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky to The Hague as a sign of support. So far, Nato has only said that Ukraine will be represented at the gathering -- but has not confirmed that Zelensky will be in attendance.

Ensure 15L ‘Bangaru Kutumbalu' are adopted by Aug 15: CM
Undavalli Camp Office: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has set an ambitious target for officials, directing them to ensure that 15 lakh families in Andhra Pradesh are adopted by 'Margadarsis' (mentors) under the Zero Poverty P4 mission by August 15 this year. He emphasised the urgent need to accelerate both the registration of Margadarsis and the adoption process. Addressing a review meeting on the 'Zero Poverty P4' initiative at his Undavalli camp office on Wednesday, the Chief Minister reiterated that the P4 model is an extension of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) policy, which was introduced following economic reforms. During the meeting, he also instructed that the Smart Andhra Pradesh Foundation be restructured and renamed as the Swarna Andhra P4 Foundation. Naidu highlighted the Amaravati land pooling model as a prime case study for the P4 approach, noting how it enabled wealth creation for 29,000 farmers by making them partners in the capital's development. In a similar vein, he urged each Margadarsi to adopt a 'Bangaru Kutumbam' (Golden Family) and actively work towards their upliftment. The Chief Minister announced that he would personally review the progress of the P4 initiative every 10 days. He also reviewed various P4 logo designs presented by officials. Officials informed the Chief Minister that several organisations, including Milaap, Project DEEP, Rang De and Bhargo, have expressed their willingness to collaborate as partners in the effective implementation of the P4 initiative. According to data presented to the Chief Minister, out of the 19,15,771 families registered as 'Bangaru Kutumbalu' across the State, Margadarsis have currently adopted 70,272 families. Among these adopted families, the largest proportion belongs to the BC community (26,340 families), followed by SCs (14,024 families) and STs (13,115 families).

Punjab minister predicts victory for AAP candidate in Ludhiana West bypoll.
Ludhiana: Punjab minister Barinder Kumar Goyal has predicted a decisive victory for Aam Aadmi Party candidate and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora in the Ludhiana West assembly byelection, calling the MP's track record a blueprint for modern governance. Speaking at a poll meeting on Tuesday evening at Tagore Nagar, Goyal said Arora's commitment to Ludhiana's development and his reputation for clean politics made him the natural choice to continue the work of late legislator Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, whose death had triggered this byelection. "It's rare to see a Rajya Sabha MP so connected to the ground," said Goyal. "In the last 50 years, no one has delivered the kind of development Arora has — from infrastructure to industry. Every time the public or party needed him, he delivered." 'A Vote for Continuity and Character' Goyal described Arora as "honest, hardworking and deeply committed," and claimed his leadership had earned the confidence of both the public and the AAP high command. "He is capable of handling any responsibility within the party or in government," he said. The minister also attributed AAP's growing traction in Punjab to chief minister Bhagwant Mann's leadership and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal's "service-first" politics. "Governance driven by honesty is what India needs. We've taken bold, pro-people decisions for farmers, workers, and the industrial sector," he said. Arora's Development Pitch Arora, presenting his three-year performance report, promised to redouble his efforts if elected as MLA. "I'll work four times harder. This city deserves modern infrastructure and planned growth," he said, outlining key initiatives such as the Halwara Airport, elevated roads, four Sidhwan Canal bridges, and the One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme for industry. He appealed to voters to support a vision of Ludhiana as a "model city for the country. " Party Presence The event was attended by several key members of AAP, including Bittu Bhullar, Gurpreet Babbal, Manu Jairath, Munish Shah, and Mala Dhanda — all of whom echoed the message of continuity, credibility, and clean governance as Ludhiana heads to the polls.
